Schools are at a Greater Risk for Cyber Attacks Than Ever Before

Report from Leading Zero Trust Edge Cloud Security Company iboss and education nonprofit Project Tomorrow Reveals Lack of Collaboration in Schools is Contributing to Increased Cyber Risk. More than 84% of District Leaders and Administrators Agree That K-12 Schools are at a Higher Risk for Cyber Attacks than Ever Before.

BOSTON, Aug. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Cyber threats against K-12 school districts are on the rise, yet only minimal steps are being taken at the local level to safeguard district technology assets and student information, according to a new research report from iboss, the leading Zero Trust Edge cloud security provider and Project Tomorrow.

The report, Why A Different Cybersecurity Ecosystem Is Needed Today, details findings from K-12 district, technology, and communications leaders on the cybersecurity challenges they’re facing today. iboss developed the report in partnership with Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit dedicated to supporting the effective implementation of research- based learning experiences in K-12 schools.

The report serves as a call to districts to implement a cross-organizational strategy and a new cybersecurity ecosystem to combat the present and future threats to the security of their district technology assets—and, crucially, their students. Additionally, the report encourages districts to incorporate cybersecurity best practices into sustainable new policies and procedures in order to adequately protect district digital assets, including student and staff personal data.

The findings should alarm school district leaders and parents, as cybersecurity incidents in schools can put student information at risk of being stolen, cripple emergency communications systems, and potentially shut down schools entirely. This year saw high profile incidents that impacted Baltimore, Minneapolis and Des Moine school districts among others. The data concludes that:

  • Districts are acutely aware of the risks: 85% of district technology leaders and 84% of district administrators now agree that our nation’s K-12 schools are a higher risk now for a cyber attack than ever before. And, according to nearly half of district technology leaders (45%), balancing the access to online or digital educational resources with their security concerns about certain products or usage behaviors is a significant challenge.
  • Little preparation is happening: Only half of district technology leaders report that they have conducted a security audit within their district to identify risks and assess preparation levels for a cyberattack. Additionally, only 37% of technology leaders who said they conducted a security audit say they are dictated by district policy and conducted annually.
  • A lack of collaboration is partially to blame: Over two-thirds of district technology leaders (67%) say that ownership of cybersecurity within their district rests wholly with the IT Department. Only 32% say that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility across the district leadership team with collective accountability.
  • Best practices may be the answer: According to nearly half (49%) of district technology leaders, what is needed most urgently today is education on best practices for K-12 cybersecurity. Other consensus calls for cyber threat preparation assessments (42%), buy-in from district leadership (42%), and increased funding for cybersecurity (39%).

Although translating the awareness of cyber threats into actual support on the district level continues to be difficult. However, the district leaders surveyed contributed potential solutions to combat apathy, including continued education about the reality of cyber risks, full and regular risk assessments, and implementing small procedural changes to obtain buy-in and demonstrate successful results.

“With cyber-attacks it’s not a matter of if, but when,” said Mark Racine, Chief Information Officer at Boston Public Schools and iboss customer. “It will happen, but the severity and extent of the attack, response, and remediation will show how well-prepared the district is. With our district response plans, everyone is involved and informed. I believe being upfront and honest in the event of an attack should be the general disposition of every district”.

“I’ve worked in both the tech and non-profit education sectors and found that enterprises have much greater awareness of cyber risk and are more willing to take action than schools,” said Dr. Julie A. Evans, CEO of Project Tomorrow. “This might be because historically, technology departments at schools have had little interaction with other departments. That has to change. IT teams must work cooperatively with administration and other departments to share their knowledge to prevent further breaches and attacks.”

Groups Submit The Right To Reproductive Freedom With Protections For Health And Safety Amendment To Ohio Attorney General

Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights (OPRR) and Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom will submit The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety amendment and summary to the Ohio Attorney General for review today. The petitions will be filed under Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights. The two groups are working together to place the issue on the 2023 statewide general election ballot.

Legal counsel and representatives of both groups drafted the amendment language and summary and then collected thousands of signatures from Ohio voters in less than two days–far exceeding the 1,000 required by state law.

“Ohioans are perilously close to losing access to safe, legal, comprehensive reproductive medical care,” OPRR executive director Dr. Lauren Beene said. “As we saw first-hand when Ohio’s abortion ban went into effect last year, withholding that care puts people’s lives and health at risk. This common-sense amendment ensures that physicians will be able to provide the care our patients need and deserve free from government interference.”

“The tremendous and unprecedented level of grassroots support for our effort to constitutionally protect reproductive rights and abortion access is truly inspiring and demonstrates how necessary this issue is for Ohioans,” OPRR president Dr. Marcela Azevedo said. “Now that we have taken this critical first step in the process, we are eager to begin collecting the signatures needed to place the amendment on the ballot so Ohioans, rather than government and extremist politicians, have the opportunity to determine the future of reproductive health care in our state.”

“Our proposal will amend the state Constitution to explicitly affirm Ohioans’ fundamental right to reproductive freedom, which includes making and carrying out your own decisions about abortion, contraception, miscarriage care, prenatal care, childbirth, and other reproductive healthcare services,” added Professor Jessie Hill, who has worked closely with Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom and the ACLU of Ohio. “Right now, we have extremist politicians who are eager to bring back a dangerous six-week abortion ban, and who want to go even further to limit Ohioans’ reproductive freedoms. These decisions rightfully belong to patients and physicians, and that’s why we’re putting this issue before the people.”

“Ohioans deserve the right to safe and legal abortion care in our communities, they should not be forced to travel out-of-state to get healthcare,” stated Dr. Sri Thakkilapati of Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom. “The power to make reproductive health decisions must be in the hands of the person seeking care. Our grassroots initiative empowers Ohioans to determine their own futures and puts power where it rightly belongs, in the hands of the people. We are energized and eager to see the ballot amendment through to victory.”

Under the laws that govern the citizen-initiated constitutional amendment process, the Attorney General will have up to 10 days to approve the summary of the amendment. If approved, the Attorney General certifies the issue to the Ohio Ballot Board, which then has up to 10 days to determine that the language contains only one constitutional amendment. After certification by the Ballot Board, the Attorney General files the amendment and its summary with the Secretary of State. At that point, the petitioners may begin the statewide signature-gathering effort. The groups must collect and submit 413,488 valid signatures by July 5, 2023.

**The two groups are hosting a joint press conference today at 2 pm. Media wishing to attend must register to attend the zoom meeting here.**

Amendment Summary and Text language can be viewed at ProtectChoiceOhio.com/Petition_Language

TITLE

The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety

SUMMARY

The Amendment would amend Article I of the Ohio Constitution by adding Section 22, titled “The Right to Reproductive Freedom with Protections for Health and Safety.”

The Amendment provides that:

1. Every individual has a right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions, including but not limited to decisions on contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one’s own pregnancy, miscarriage care, and abortion.

2. The State shall not, directly or indirectly, burden, penalize, prohibit, interfere with, or discriminate against either an individual’s voluntary exercise of this right or a person or entity that assists an individual in exercising this right, unless the State demonstrates that it is using the least restrictive means to advance the individual’s health in accordance with widely accepted and evidence-based standards of care.

3. However, abortion may be prohibited after fetal viability. But in no case may such an abortion be prohibited if, in the professional judgment of the pregnant patient’s treating physician, it is necessary to protect the pregnant patient’s life or health.

4. As used in this Section, “Fetal viability” means “the point in a pregnancy when, in the professional judgment of the pregnant patient’s treating physician, the fetus has a significant likelihood of survival outside the uterus with reasonable measures. This is determined on a case-by-case basis,”; and “State” includes any governmental entity and political subdivision.

5. This Section is self-executing.

New Interactive Maps Powerfully Illustrate the Post-Roe Abortion Care Landscape

Instead of reflecting on the progress made in improving reproductive well-being, we are again fighting for the right to access abortion care,” said Dr, McDonald-Mosley. “The new abnormal for abortion as well as reproductive well-being more broadly can be described in only one word: chaos.

Ahead of the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, new interactive maps from Power to Decide’s Abortion Finder provide a compelling illustration of the terrible new chapter for abortion access that’s unfolded over the past year.

“January 22 would have – and should have – marked the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade,” said Power to Decide CEO Raegan McDonald-Mosley, MD, MPH. “But instead of reflecting on the progress made in improving reproductive well-being for people over the last half-century, we are again fighting for the right to access abortion care. The new abnormal for abortion as well as reproductive well-being more broadly can be described in only one word: chaos.”

The Abortion Finder interactive maps convey the chaos sparked by the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization on June 24, 2022, which rolled back generations of reproductive rights by overturning Roe v. Wade – and now jeopardizes the reproductive rights of generations to come.

In some states, the impact was felt well before the actual decision was released. For instance, following the leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s draft decision in May, Oklahoma became the first state in the nation to begin enforcing a total ban on abortion, and South Dakota’s sole abortion provider closed in anticipation of Dobbs.

Only 48 hours after the ruling, abortion care providers had closed across nine states. The following months were filled with legal confusion and uncertainty, as abortion bans and restrictions were variously implemented, challenged, enforced and/or lifted in states across the country.

As a result, 14 states are now without a health center that offers any abortion care, impacting more than 72 million people, including more than 15 million people who could become pregnant.

“The barriers to abortion access have always been disproportionately high for young people, people of color, people living in rural areas, and people struggling to make ends meet,” said Dr. McDonald-Mosley. “These new abortion bans and restrictions put people’s health at risk and ignore the critical need for such care.

“Abortion care is every bit as necessary as it was before Dobbs, or Roe, or at any point in history. It is essential, time-sensitive care that protects people’s health, their families and their lives. With Abortion Finder and other resources from Power to Decide, we will continue to connect people with information and access to care as quickly and seamlessly as possible.”

Power to Decide is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works to advance sexual and reproductive well-being for all by providing trusted information, expanding access to quality services, and catalyzing culture change.

IWPR Condemns Anti-Abortion Vote in the US House of Representatives

News Image

Today’s vote in the House of Representatives is dangerous, disingenuous, and undermines women’s access to the full range of reproductive healthcare options.

Statement from C. Nicole Mason, President and CEO of the Institute for Women’s Policy Research on today’s anti-abortion vote in the US House of Representatives:

Today’s vote in the House of Representatives is dangerous, disingenuous, and undermines women’s access to the full range of reproductive healthcare options, including abortion care. Instead of acting to ensure that working women and their families have access to paid sick and family leave, affordable childcare, and a viable safety net, they are working to pass additional restrictions that limit the freedom of women to make their own decisions about their health, bodies, and lives. Today’s so-called “Born Alive” bill is legislation based on a fictional problem, but, if enacted, it would have very real consequences for women and their families.

Efforts to restrict abortion have devastating and far-reaching effects – on individuals, families, and communities. IWPR’s groundbreaking research published in the Reproductive Rights Index, produced as part of IWPR’s Status of Women in the States Initiative, provides a data-driven look at how drastically access to reproductive health care varies by location – and puts a numerical value on some of the consequences of restrictive abortion policies. Even before the most recent spate of restrictions following the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion bans cost state economies billions of dollars.

IWPR remains committed to working with Congress and our partners to ensure women have access to the full range of reproductive health care services, including abortion care.

Dallas-based Heroic Media Announces Addition to Its Executive Team

Heroic Media’s Board of Directors and its Chief Executive Officer, Brett Attebery, are pleased to announce that Michael (Mike) J. Murray has joined the Heroic Media team as President. Attebery had served as both President and CEO since November 2020, and will continue to serve as the organization’s CEO while Murray takes over the President position. Murray will lead Heroic Media’s marketing and fundraising operations, while Attebery will oversee execution of the organization’s overall strategic plan.

Attebery commented, “Heroic Media made a major strategic decision last year to invest in building the first national non-abortion-providing women’s healthcare brand that can outcompete Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry nationwide. Rather than attempt to build that brand from the ground up, we believe it is more prudent to invest in the expansion of an existing brand that already has a proven track record of outcompeting Planned Parenthood in St. Louis, Missouri: ThriVe® Express Women’s Healthcare.”

Attebery continued, “Our stakeholders have already enthusiastically invested significantly in this new brand-building mission by underwriting the expansion of the ThriVe® brand and its new telehealth service, ThriVe+, in both Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. As ThriVe® proved in St. Louis, building a brand that outcompetes Planned Parenthood requires significant financial resources to sustain a comprehensive advertising program over the long term. Our stakeholders are excited about investing in the expansion of the ThriVe® brand with the goal of making it young women’s preferred healthcare brand nationwide, so we believe now is the time to add to our team a seasoned executive who has a stellar track record of marketing and fundraising success. Mike fits that description perfectly, and we are very excited that he will be leading our marketing and fundraising operations.”

Murray commented, “I have always loved Heroic Media’s mission to save lives from abortion. I previously served as the Executive Director of Heroic Media’s Dallas office over a decade ago, and I am excited to come back on to the team to lead its marketing and fundraising efforts. I believe Heroic Media’s focus on offering only programs that show measurable impact at saving lives, as well as its approach of using sound business principles to compete against the abortion industry, resonates deeply with philanthropists.”

Mike Murray is a licensed attorney who has served in development leadership roles with The Catholic Foundation and Catholic Charities in Dallas and most recently nationally with PragerU as Vice President of Development. Mike and his wife Colette have five children and live in Dallas.

“I am grateful to Brett and the Board of Directors for the opportunity to serve in such an impactful way. I look forward to working with Brett and the exceptionally talented Heroic Media team to help Americans who oppose abortion invest in building the first national counter brand to Planned Parenthood,” said Murray.

Louisiana reproductive rights advocate Rep. Mandie Landry looks to make women’s issues centerpiece of Louisiana State Senate candidacy

Rep. Landry speaking at an abortion rights rally in front of SCOTUS, March 2020.

Successive Governors of Louisiana since 2004 have prepared for all abortion clinics to be banned in the state if Roe v. Wade is overturned, and recent legislation signed by current Governor John Bel Edwards seems to expand that prohibition to include IUDs and other forms of birth control.

A lone voice objecting to these efforts is State Representative Mandie Landry, who from the moment her campaign was launched in a small district in Uptown New Orleans established herself as the new voice for the state’s reproductive rights movement.

In taking that role, she has been the object of local Republican fundraising campaigns for the majority of her colleagues, but the diminutive lawyer is used to the finger-pointing from the Right, since she has represented one of the state’s abortion clinics, an IVF clinic, as well as people seeking abortions. Before her election, Louisiana never elected a person who had those credentials to a state office.

As a reproductive rights advocate and educator, her concerns for Louisiana women have only grown while in office, and thus when the State Senator who represented her area abruptly resigned earlier this year, her supporters convinced her to seek the higher seat.

Standing with her in making that decision are women, new parents, health-care providers, trial attorneys and the state’s labor unions.

“The extreme measures taken in Louisiana to prohibit of abortion even in cases of rape and incest, are dangerous to the health and well-being of women in this state,” Rep. Landry said. “The growing and dangerous assault on reproductive rights makes it more important than ever to elect strong and knowledgeable advocates especially since our reproductive rights were lost in state houses – and they will only be regained in state houses.”

“Women will undoubtedly be arrested in states like Louisiana with trigger laws, and I will never stop fighting because one day the tide will turn – and we need to be ready to spring into action quickly,” she said.

Rep. Landry has been an effective advocate for women in the state. Thanks to her legislation, Louisiana became the first state in the nation to expand Medicaid for new mothers from 60 days to one year. Louisiana has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the country. This new provision will provide immediate care to about 14,000 new mothers, and result in an almost $20 million increased investment in maternal health care in the state.

She also passed laws that banned the use of solitary confinement for pregnant teens and women, or for anyone who has just given birth; to allow young pregnant and parenting students to stay in public high schools to graduate; and created a refundable tax credit for burial expenses for women who pass away due to pregnancy complications. Her legislation also guarantees that 17-year-old abuse victims and witnesses are provided the same legal protections as all other minors.

“I’m looking forward to my election as a State Senator this November,” said Representative Landry, who will find out on July 22 who else will compete with her for the seat. “A strong, pro-choice woman has occupied this seat since the turn of this century and I intend to continue to honor.”
