Big Green IT Completes Cloud Migration For Wind Creek Hospitality

Big Green IT successfully completed a complex migration project for Wind Creek Hospitality in their acquisition of the Sands Bethlehem Casino Resort in Pennsylvania. The project required an immediate change of email address for more than 700 employees the moment escrow closed, which Big Green IT completed with zero downtime.

The Rocklin-based IT company was approached by Wind Creek Hospitality at the end of 2018, soon after Wind Creek began the process of acquiring the Sands Bethlehem Casino Resort. Upon determining the scope of the project and potential challenges it posed, Wind Creek hired Big Green IT to prepare, in essence, an ‘email escrow environment’ that would be used to instantaneously migrate the mailboxes of the 700+ existing employees it was retaining from the Sands, the moment the sale closed.

Because Sands is a publicly traded company, the acquisition process entailed many rules and regulations, particularly when it came to navigating the company’s internal IT environment.

“We wanted to gain as much information as possible about the potential barriers to migration the current environment posed,” said Jeff Rogers, CEO of Big Green IT. “We first performed our Office 365 Readiness Assessment, which gave us the information needed to move forward with planning a migration that would minimize user disruption.”

With the information provided by the Wind Creek and Sands IT teams, Big Green IT developed an Office 365 migration plan that would allow the Wind Creek team to enable its newly acquired employees to continue to work undisrupted. Big Green IT worked for six weeks to prep the Microsoft Azure Active Directory and staged mailboxes for the cutover migration.

On May 31, 2019 at 10:30 AM, the Big Green IT team performed the migration with zero issues or downtime. The migration went so well that John Enriquez, CIO of Wind Creek Hospitality, noted the absence of questions or complaints from his team in the hours directly following the cutover.

“It was a huge project that was executed perfectly,” said Enriquez. “The whole time, I felt Big Green IT was a partner on my side, keeping my company’s best interests at heart.”

Securing the U.S. Power Grid with Meadow & TFA-Labs

This is a perfect use case for Meadow, and coupled with TFA Labs’ unique blockchain hardware, it’s a defense-grade, mathematically-secure solution that has a lot of surprising benefits.

TFA Labs has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and are combining Meadow and TFA Labs’ Signed at Source (IoT-SaS), hardware to help modernize and secure the U.S. electrical grid. Together, they’re building an IoT solution that provides strong blockchain-backed security that utilizes a public blockchain ledger to ensure immutable, tamper proof messaging as well as non-spoofable device identities generated by their proprietary hardware.

The opportunity to modernize and secure the U.S. power grid is enormous; much of it was built in the 1930s, long before connected networks and the security concerns that come with them. With Meadow and IoT-SaS, the grid can not only be brought up to date, but done so in a secure manner, providing uncompromisable command and control, secure messaging, and centralized management.

“This is a perfect use case for Meadow, and coupled with TFA Labs’ unique blockchain hardware, it’s a defense-grade, mathematically-secure solution that has a lot of surprising benefits,” said Bryan Costanich, CEO of Wilderness Labs; the creators of Meadow.

Massive Threat Surface with Catastrophic Consequences

The U.S. electrical grid and supporting infrastructure is a major target for hackers not only because of its current lack of security, which provides a major threat surface, but also the ability to inflict catastrophic economic and industrial damage if compromised. Much of the equipment and control systems, some of which are nearly a century old, were never intended to be connected to public networks, yet due to the increasing need for operational automation and centralized control to respond to both changing demand and new power generation coming online, many old, insecure networks that operate the grid have glaring vulnerabilities.

Probes of the grid in 2016 (https://www.wsj.com/articles/americas-electric-grid-has-a-vulnerable-back-doorand-russia-walked-through-it-11547137112) were so blatant and successful, representing a major catastrophic opportunity, that in 2018, the U.S. Government took the unusual step of directly and publicly blaming the Russian Government for them.

Since then, the U.S. Department of Energy (the administration that oversees the power grid) has doubled down on efforts to not only secure the grid, but to modernize it in order to handle the needs of today’s energy users, as well as producers; which is where Meadow and TFA-Labs IoT-SaS, hardware enabled, blockchain-based security come into play.

Meadow + TFA Labs, Signed at Source

TFA Labs won a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy in June, and chose Meadow to be their primary IoT platform, specifically because of its .Net development story. Stuart Johnson, CTO, TFA Labs remarked; “I bought into the ‘Write Once, Run Anywhere concept’ in 2004 with Java. But the microcontrollers we worked with, never lived up to that promise, and it’s taken another 15 years to finally get the device we had hoped for. Now you can take a Meadow board, and run full C#, .Net code, which not only has an abundance of open source libraries and business use, but you can actually share that code with your web, desktop, and mobile apps.”

Beyond the ability to run Microsoft’s open source .NET platform apps on a microcontroller, Meadow has several other key advantages; it’s cloud managed and can be updated over the air, and because it’s built on a microcontroller, it can integrate with, and drive industrial control systems, sensors, motors, and more.

“Meadow is a revolutionary step forward in humankind’s technological progress; it’s the first and only enterprise-grade IoT platform that actually makes IoT not only easy to build, but those solutions can be maintained, monitored, and managed in the field, without the need for physical access; a critical requirement of industrial solutions such as smart grid nodes,” said Wilderness Labs’ CEO, Bryan Costanich.

TFA Labs, IoT-SaS hardware was designed specifically for Meadow, and has a number of key features that augment Meadow applications with extra layers of security. First, it features onboard hardware-encrypted storage, which enables data to be cryptographically signed on the device, ensuring that the data is authentic and trusted. Next, IoT-SaS is built on blockchain technology, which means that the data itself can either be hashed or signed, and then added to the blockchain ledger, which provides the ability to validate not only the integrity of the data, making it immutable (and immune to man-in-the-middle attacks), but also provides a mathematical notification of the absence of data, providing the ability for reliable messaging. Finally, because of the nature of the blockchain ledger, it provides a completely auditible, trusted history, ensuring not only that known and trusted parties have created the data, but that history is preserved and verifiable.

Together, Meadow and IoT-SaS provide an all in one, enterprise IoT solution with defense-grade security.

Factom Blockchain Protocol Support

TFA Labs’ IoT-SaS hardware supports multiple blockchain technologies, but has built-in support for the Factom blockchain protocol out of the box. Unlike other blockchain protocols, Factom was designed specifically for enterprise and government use cases, and has a number of features that make it especially useful in these scenarios. For instance, it’s decoupled from cryptocurrency, meaning that users don’t need to own any Factom currency to use it. It also has a fixed data cost of $0.001/kb, which provides a predictable and transparent budgeting process for its use. Additionally, it can be used in both public and private-permissioned blockchains, enabling it to be taken advantage of within the context of private networks. Finally, Factom allows each device to manage it’s own ledger, enabling thin blockchain clients (also known as light nodes), which are designed specifically for IoT use cases.

Because of these advantages, Factom is currently used by organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Advantages Beyond the Grid

While the Meadow and IoT-SaS solutions is perfect for modernization and securitization of the public grid, it also provides advantages beyond that. Together, they can be used in any IoT use case where defense-grade security is needed, and both Wilderness Labs and TFA Labs look forward to bringing customized IoT applications to industrial systems the world over.

Virtual Reality (VR) May Provide More Effective Approach to Teaching Children with Dyslexia

According to recent studies, one of the biggest strengths of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) is their ability to give students real world immersive experiences that could make learning both more memorable and more meaningful. But can virtual reality improve a dyslexic child’s reading experience?

Based on case studies from numerous users and extensive classroom sessions both instructing children and observing their experiences of learning through VR, the principals of the Lyfta digital platform have concluded that education content presented in a Virtual Reality format is more intuitive and memorable for learners.

In a new interview with C.M. Rubin, Founder of CMRubinWorld, Educators Serdar Ferit and Katri Meriläinen report that teachers found “children are able to construct factual connections above their normal level when learning about phenomena in a contextualised environment.” Lyfta is conducting academic research in collaboration with two Finnish universities to understand the full potential of VR for dyslexic children. “The preliminary results show that a purposefully designed VR environment can significantly improve dyslexic children’s reading experience.”

Christie’s Jack Kline inducted into the ShowEast Hall of Fame

News Image

“Jack has been a leader at Christie and in the industry for many years. He is a respected statesman and voice in the industry and has been an inspiration to many people. Jack is certainly a major addition to the hall of fame.”

Jack Kline, current advisor and former Chairman, President and CEO of Christie was inducted into the annual ShowEast Hall of Fame. An honor which pays tribute to a select band of film industry veterans, the inductees are hand-picked by an all-industry executive committee. Kline’s induction ceremony took place at a special gala luncheon held on October 17, the final day of ShowEast 2019.

ShowEast began its “Hall of Fame” in 1999 with the aim of recognizing individuals who have served the motion picture industry with great distinction. The list of inductees includes those from exhibition, distribution as well as the equipment and concession business. The ShowEast executive committee takes nominations yearly and then invites those selected to join each year at the convention. Upon reflection, Robert Sunshine, of Film Expo Group, said this about Jack, “It is a great honor to induct my good friend Jack Kline into the hall of fame. Jack has been a leader at Christie and in the industry for many years. He is a respected statesman and voice in the industry and has been an inspiration to many people. Jack is certainly a major addition to the hall of fame.”

This honor is the latest in a career filled with outstanding achievements. Jack was most recently recognized by the Variety Childrens’ Charity of Northern California for his long history of involvement with charities and commitment to good causes.

Kline’s involvement in the film industry spans over 40 years and is noteworthy for his pioneering work in the adoption of digital projection in movie theaters. During the shift from film to digital, he successfully formed strategic partnerships with major Hollywood studios, exhibitors, projector manufacturers, and technology providers to advance the installation of digital cinema. He then played a critical role in developing the Virtual Print Fee (VPF) financial solution and the Christie/AIX deployment program that introduced thousands of cutting-edge digital cinema projectors into the marketplace.

The program’s success played a key role in sparking the adoption of digital cinema projectors and launching a revolution in entertainment worldwide. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was presented with the ‘Ken Mason Inter-Society Award’ at CinemaCon in 2014.

Jack is a member of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE), Motion Picture Pioneers, and International Theatre Equipment Association (ITEA).

About ShowEast

ShowEast takes place October 14-17, 2019, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami, Florida. The convention will attract an estimated 1,300 domestic and Latin American motion picture industry professionals and will feature product presentations and screenings of major upcoming films, exclusive sponsored events, exciting and informative seminars, and the ShowEast EXPO.

First-ever image projected onto Russian White House using 36 Christie 4K projectors

News Image

The number and variety of projects that we have completed using Christie Boxer projectors represent more than just a list of events…it is a true honor for us to be able to add this particular facade to the portfolio of sites that we have worked on.

Russian National Flag Day was celebrated on a large scale this year, with a number of cities planning as many as three special events to mark the occasion. The central events took place in Moscow, with the iconic facades of the capital’s buildings coming alive with projection mapping for several evenings. The key event in the city was the projection onto the White House, the House of the Government of the Russian Federation, as this was the first time in history that the building façade had been illuminated using projection mapping. Big Screen Show (BSS), which organized the historic event, selected 36 Christie® Boxer 4K30 3DLP® projectors.

National Flag Day was established in 1994, and has been celebrated annually on August 22 ever since. 2019 is a special anniversary year, since the Russian flag is turning 25 years old, so festivities appropriate to the occasion were arranged. Arkady Gerbovitsky, Commercial Director and one of the founders of BSS, said, “It was a great honor for us to be able to work on this project. Of course, it was also a tremendous responsibility. The White House, just like the flag itself, is one of the country’s most important symbols, so the bar was set high. Before we attempted it, no one had ever projected video onto the facade of the White House before. We’re naturally proud that we managed to do it.”

A dynamic image of the Russian tricolor with a resolution of over 1 million pixels was projected onto the White House for four days in late August courtesy of 36 Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors. The projectors were installed across from the House of the Russian Government on two towers on the Moscow River embankment, at a distance of approximately 115 meters. What appeared to be a single projected image was in fact composed of 12 frames (4 frames wide, 3 frames high), with each frame measuring 34×18 meters, with a total projection surface of 5,500 square meters. Due to the high brightness and the 4K resolution of the Christie projectors, the central part of the facade displaying the tricolor could be seen from many places around the city, including from the water and aboard pleasure boats.

“The number and variety of projects that we have completed using Christie Boxer projectors represent more than just a list of events. The story behind each one of them is unique. But it is a true honor for us to be able to add this particular facade to the portfolio of sites that we have worked on. Naturally, the tight deadlines and the strict protocols governing the facility’s operation were special factors that influenced how we worked on the project,” Evgeny Marinichev, Technical Director of BSS, noted. “But thanks to some good teamwork, everything went as planned. Of all the features that the Christie Boxer projectors offer, the IP management capabilities proved to be particularly useful.”

A team from Christie partner dreamlaser also worked on site near the White House. Some of the Christie Boxer projectors, along with the video servers, were transported from Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow.

During the anniversary celebration for the Russian tricolor, another facade in the capital was also covered in a video projection mapping: the building complex on Prospekt Akademika Sakharova. Three towers fitted with 12 Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors were installed on the opposite side of the avenue, each projecting onto a separate facade of the tripartite structure. The image was projected onto the upper part of the facade of the iconic Vnesheconombank complex.

“In addition to the tight deadlines that we had to meet on this project, we also had to deal with the special architectural features of the building: the facade featured contrasts between light exterior walls and almost black windows,” Evgeny Marinichev continued. “So we conducted preliminary tests in order to ensure that the flag’s image could be projected at an acceptable quality level. Here, we also worked with 4K content across a projection area of 65×35 m. Again, the IP management features proved to be very useful to us here, just like they were at the first site.”

The flawless color reproduction of the Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projectors also played an important role: “As in our previous projects, we again found that it was vital to work exclusively with this equipment, since we have boundless confidence in its capabilities and specifications. In particular, we relied on these projectors to accurately reproduce the flag’s colors, which are strictly regulated. This was especially tricky given the scale of the projection. Now we can say with confidence that everything was carried out to the highest level. The projection was visible from bridges, from the water, and from the city streets.”
