PSTA Releases Initial Industry and Public Safety Recommendations on Situational Awareness

We have worked hard to ensure that ongoing situational awareness becomes integrated into public safety operations now that public safety has come to expect high speed access to reliable and resilient public safety broadband, David Fritsche, PSTA SA Subcommittee Chair and Secured Communications CTO

Consistent with the purpose and mission of the PSTA, the PSTA Board of Directors is pleased to release the Situational Awareness Technical Subcommittee report https://www.pstalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/PSTA-SA-Report.pdf which includes the initial PSTA recommendations for public safety and industry.

The Situational Awareness Subcommittee was established to recommend a common set of standard APIs and interface structures that will make the situational awareness construct for public safety users much easier to implement and integrate into existing systems.

PSTA’s recommendations are being made based on input and discussion among PSTA industry and public safety membership in subcommittee discussions that have been ongoing over the last year, and have been formulated leveraging this expertise as well as publicly available standards.

The PSTA board has recommended a common language and symbology to ensure that all public safety users are able to consistently identify key landmarks and information across platforms. PSTA also recommends the use of open geospatial data standards, the use of the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) in establishing a common naming convention schema across public safety, and the use of Project Open Data to address a common set of open standard metadata data sets and APIs for use by both federal and state agencies.

“We have worked hard to ensure that ongoing situational awareness becomes integrated into public safety operations now that public safety has come to expect high speed access to reliable and resilient public safety broadband,” said David Fritsche, PSTA Situational Awareness Subcommittee Chair and Secured Communications CTO.

“Situational awareness incorporates multiple applications and platforms to share real time information for first responders and we need to ensure these systems are interoperable as they become embedded into every public safety organization,” added Anatoli Levine, PSTA Situational Awareness Subcommittee Member and Softil Director of Products and Standards.

As PSTA considers additional, relevant, information provided within the Situational Awareness Subcommittee, it will update and release any changes to its recommendations as necessary. The current report version will be posted on the PSTA website (https://www.pstalliance.org/technical-committees/subcommittee-report-and-comment-form/) and will be open and accessible to the public.te

If you are a member of a public safety agency/association, industry or academia and want to contribute to these important technical subcommittee discussions going forward, please visit https://www.pstalliance.org/how-to-join/ to join the PSTA and share your experience and knowledge.

Redzone Completes Broadband Expansion to 33 New Maine Communities in October

Redzone continues to reduce Maine’s digital divide with major broadband expansion in October

“Wireless has become the new gold standard for rural broadband deployment in Maine and across America,” said Jim McKenna, Redzone President & CEO.

Redzone Wireless, LLC, a Maine-based broadband services company, announced that is has constructed and activated 9 new fixed wireless broadband sites serving 33 Maine communities, extending broadband access to 33,650 new homes & businesses in mostly rural locations during the month of October.

The new sites provide connectivity which meet FCC and ConnectME broadband standards of 25/3 Mbps, and support video streaming on multiple devices, online gaming, distance learning, remote business applications, tele-health, video conferencing, and the full range of Internet applications typically used within a home or business.

Redzone’s new network coverage extends broadband to portions of 33 total Maine communities including:

1.    Arundel

2.    Appleton

3.    Belmont

4.    Biddeford

5.    Bucksport

6.    Dayton

7.    Durham

8.    Easton

9.    Frankfort

10. Farmingdale

11.    Gray

12.    Greene

13.    Leeds

14.    Lyman

15.    Monmouth

16.    Morrill

17.    New Gloucester

18.    North Pownal

19.    North Yarmouth

20.    North Raymond

21.    Orland

22.    Presque Isle

23.    Prospect

24.    Readfield

25.    Searsmont

26.    South Poland

27.    Union

28.    Verona Island

29.    Wales

30.    Washington

31.    Westfield

32.    West Gardiner

33.    Winterport

Redzone’s total Maine broadband coverage now reaches 349,000 households – more than 63% of all Maine homes. The new fixed wireless broadband network operates on FCC licensed Mid-band wireless spectrum, and is considered one of the the largest FCC licensed fixed wireless broadband deployments in the US delivering 25 Mbps broadband speeds in rural areas.

“Wireless has become the new gold standard for rural broadband deployment across America,” said Jim McKenna, Redzone President & CEO. “While Redzone is leading Maine in the development of fixed wireless infrastructure, national mobile carriers, regional telcos, and cable operators are increasingly deploying LTE and 5G fixed wireless as the preferred rural last mile broadband solution.” added McKenna.

Redzone’s strategy to disrupt the conventional model for delivering broadband access via cable, wire or fiber by extending Maine’s existing fiber infrastructure wirelessly has been highly effective, and dramatically reduced both the cost and time required to connect Maine homes to broadband.

Redzone uses powerful Gigabit microwave “backhaul” radios to quickly and cost effectively connect clusters of towers to to a single fiber optic line. This innovative approach has reduced broadband network capital costs by 90%, and it has accelerated the delivery timeframe to a few months versus the multiple years commonly required to complete a comparable fiber-to-the-home network.

“If Redzone can provide true broadband access to 349,000 Maine locations in just 4 years without tax payer funded subsidies, there is significant logical justification to shift the focus in Maine from funding fiber-to-the-home projects to favoring hybrid fiber/fixed wireless solutions,” said Michael Forcillo, Executive Vice President of Redzone Wireless. “In 2019 alone Redzone has delivered premium affordable broadband access to 55,000 new Maine locations without a single dollar of investment from taxpayers.”

According to ConnectME, Maine’s publicly funded organization dedicated to improving broadband in the state, there are still nearly 80,000 locations around the state that lack access to 25 Mbps service. Redzone estimates that it will address 20% of these un-served locations upon completion of its 2019 expansion – closing Maine’s digital divide by 25% this year.

Redzone offers a range of broadband plans and price options – including the most popular among Maine cord cutters providing FCC recommended 25 Mbps download speeds, including unlimited data, with no contracts or installation fees. New iOS App Transcribes Unlimited Minutes of Speech Privately, on Device

iPhone transcribing live

iPhone transcribing live

It’s great that we can use AI in a way that respects privacy, and helps people get their jobs done,

iPhone and iPad owners can now get unlimited minutes of private, editable transcription with the new app, Dictation by Blueshift.

Today (Nov. 7, 2019) Blueshift Development LLC, a company out of Austin, Texas, launched its app with the aim of providing private, affordable transcription.

Transcription happens entirely offline in the app, using new features found in the latest software release from Apple in iOS 13.0. This means that a variety of devices can now access quality transcription that does not involve sending audio to cloud services.

The app features live transcription while recording from the app. Users can also import audio and video after the fact to get the transcript.

People can also edit the app with timestamps at every word, so that they can select text to jump to that point in the audio for an easier time refining or correcting the transcript.

“I started out my working career as a journalist,” Matthew Waller, the developer behind Blueshift, said. “So I’m excited to help the trade and many others with transcription, just to get rid of some of the grunt work.”

Students, business professionals, interviewers and transcription professionals can use the app to get a head start on their project.

The app continues to lead in the trend of machine learning happening on device, a position advanced by both Apple and Google.

“It’s great that we can use AI in a way that respects privacy, and helps people get their jobs done,” Waller said.

Google for instance, introduced offline transcription that is available only through their flagship Pixel line of phones. Dictation will be available on any device that can support iOS 13.

Companies received criticism this summer after not being explicit that their voice assistant audio could be listened to by contractors.

Additional features in Dictation include transcribing in 13 languages and dialects, bookmarking audio during recording and during editing the transcript, trimming the file, exporting audio, exporting text, dark mode, searching for a file based on text inside the transcript or title and multiple window support on iPad.

The app costs $20 per year via a renewable subscription.

The app is available at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dictation-by-blueshift/id1474180179

Festo Now Distributing Magswitch Magnetic Gripping and Clamping Solutions

News Image

Festo now offers Magswitch switchable magnetic gripping and clamping solutions to automotive and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) through a new distribution agreement. Magswitch automation solutions are designed to last the life of a production line. The company has shown that energy costs can be lowered by as much as 90%, throughput can be increased by up to 30%, and capital costs reduced as much as 25% compared to systems using vacuum cups and pneumatic/electric grippers or clamps.

Magswitch offers single sided gripping systems featuring true on-and-off magnetic technology that can significantly simplify and lower costs of complete automation systems in OEM assembled lines in such applications as robotic welding, pick-and-place, and body-in-white. Magswitch components integrate seamlessly into the Festo electric and pneumatic automated motion architecture. “The technology is a natural complement to the Festo range of products and global customer base,” said Ian Cleaver, Festo Industry Segment Director.

Festo/Magswitch Solutions can be applied effectively to press lines and stamping operations where switchable magnets can handle lubricated sheet metal blanks more effectively than suction cups by gripping through lubrication. In assembly and body-in-white applications, Magswitch switchable magnets offer the versatility and simplicity of suction cups while maintaining the reliability and safety of traditional power clamps. With single sided clamping, Magswitch tools can facilitate higher speed and quality while welding, and when integrated with vision systems the tools streamline bin picking and handling randomly arranged components.

In machine tending and pick-and-place applications, operations can be performed significantly faster with switchable magnetic end-of-arm tools compared to mechanical grippers, power clamps, and suction cups. Separating ferromagnetic sheets with Magswitch sheet fanners and variable flux systems decreases downtime significantly and enables double blank detection. Magswitch offers custom-pole-shoe accessories with superior holding force that can securely grip components with various geometries. Applications in I-beam handling, fixture tooling, and ergonomic lift assistance can deliver efficiency gains while reducing downtime and capital costs.

“Switchable magnetics from Magswitch is an important addition to the Festo range of pneumatic and electric grippers and clamps,” said Darren O’Driscoll, product manager, Festo. “The fact these components integrate seamlessly within the Festo motion architecture adds additional value.”

“Festo technology is incorporated within our switchable magnetic components,” said Joseph Cyrek, Magswitch President of Automation. “In addition, we have joint research and development projects underway. Extending our relationship to include Festo being a supplier and distributor benefits the numerous companies that will now have access to Festo and Magswitch integrated solutions.”

Cybereason is Joined by Veteran FBI, DHS, U.S. Secret Service and Arlington, VA Officials to Protect Free Elections in 2020

News Image

During Operation Blackout members of many law enforcement agencies strategized on how to respond to direct attacks against the city of Adversaria during the Presidential Election on November 3, 2020

Cybereason, creators of the leading Cyber Defense Platform, and members of both federal and local law enforcement agencies came together on Tuesday, November 5, at Operation Blackout in Washington, DC. The event was hosted by Venable LLP. Operation Blackout is a simulation of a 2020 Presidential Election hack in a fictitious swing state city, Adversaria.

During the Operation Blackout simulation, Red and Blue teams faced off in a strategic duel. The Red team, led by Yonatan Striem-Amit, Cybereason’s CTO and Co-founder and other hackers, were bent on disrupting voting on election day in a moderately-sized swing state city. The Blue team, led by Danielle Wood, Cybereason’s Director of Advisory Services, also included the FBI, DHS, U.S. Secret Service and Arlington, VA Police.

The goal of the tabletop exercise was to examine and advance the preparedness of local and federal law enforcement agencies in the event that nation-state actors try to undermine free elections by attacking infrastructure on election day, November 3, 2020. To date, most election hacking simulations have focused on hacking voter rolls or electronic voting machines.

“Operation Blackout reinforced the fact that the line between the digital and physical world is blurred and keeps getting more so. The rate at which we have developed digital lives and seen digital touch everything is unprecedented. That means we have to practice, and get the protocols, relationships and contingencies right in peacetime for election security and public safety around them. With one year to go until the 2020 elections, what could be more important than to start exploring the possibility that democracy could be disrupted by nation-states,” said Sam Curry, Cybereason’s Chief Security Officer and Operation Blackout White Team Leader.

Both the Red and Blue teams performed well during the simulation. The Red team carried out a series of four moves but overall, their mission failed due to overkill. They wanted to undermine the election, but instead it was cancelled by law enforcement agencies after more than 30 citizens died and 200 were injured. The Blue team took decisive, immediate action throughout the exercise. The integrity of votes wasn’t compromised, but due to public safety concerns the election was rescheduled.

“What a great day in Washington, DC running a simulation with the goals of protecting free elections. It wouldn’t have been possible without the great work of the Cybereason team, Venable LLP, the FBI, DHS, U.S. Secret Service and Arlington, VA Police. Cybereason is on a mission to help train and enable federal and local law enforcement agencies to strategize and defend democracy in the leadup to the 2020 election. Globally, Cybereason is turning the tables on adversaries determined to hack critical infrastructure such as elections and cellular communications,” said Roi Carmel, Cybereason’s Chief Product and Marketing Officer.
