SAE International Publishes Updated Standard for On-Route Mechanized Conductive EV Charging Systems for Buses

SAE International, announced today it has published its latest standard, SAE J3105®: Electric Vehicle Power Transfer System Using Conductive Automated Connection Devices, along with three new tributary documents. The standard covers the general physical, electrical, functional, testing, and performance requirements for a mechanized (hands-free) conductive power transfer system primarily for transit buses using an overhead coupler capable of, but not limited to, transferring direct current (DC) power.

According to a report published in 2019 by P&S Intelligence, the U.S. electric bus market size is projected to reach $1,948.5 million by 2024. The market growth is primarily driven by several federal, regional, and state grants and incentive programs. In addition, low cost of ownership, coupled with low maintenance cost of electric buses, specially battery electric buses (BEB) is expected to benefit the market during the forecast period.

As the market expands, the need for the continued standardization of DC power distribution remains, and SAE J3105 addresses the many interfaces required to ensure power delivery is consistent. SAE J3105 defines a conductive power transfer method, including the curbside electrical contact interface, the vehicle connection interface, the electrical characteristics of the DC supply and the communication system. It also covers the functional and dimensional requirements for the vehicle connection interface and supply equipment interface.

  • SAE J3105/2™: Vehicle-Mounted Pantograph Connection covers the connection interface relevant requirements for an electric vehicle power transfer system using a conductive automated charging device based on a conventional rail vehicle pantograph design.
  • SAE J3105/3™: Enclosed Pin and Socket Connection covers the main safety and interoperability relevant requirements for an electric vehicle power transfer system using a conductive automated charging device based on an enclosed pin and socket design.

VT MAK Successfully Completes Technical Assessment on the U.S. Army’s Synthetic Training Environment


VT MAK supports soldiers conducting a recent technical assessment at the U.S. Army STE Technology Integration Facility in Orlando, Fla.

VT MAK (MAK), a company of ST Engineering North America, today announced that it has successfully completed a programmatic milestone by demonstrating the core technologies that make up the U.S. Army’s Synthetic Training Environment’s (STE) Common Synthetic Environment (CSE), integrated with the One World terrain (OWT) and the Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainer (RVCT) devices. The technical assessment was the second of a series of program milestones in which MAK is making capabilities available to the Army for hands-on evaluation as part of an agile development process.

The CSE, developed by MAK, consists of the Training Management Tool (TMT) which enables soldiers to plan, prepare, execute, and assess training exercises, and the Training Simulation Software (TSS) which provides the simulation environment for the trainees as well as the simulation of the non-player characters.

At the assessment, MAK used vignettes to demonstrate progress against program requirements. Afterward, soldiers sat down with MAK engineers in a one-on-one setting to delve deep into specific capabilities.

Soldiers then independently conducted an end-to-end training exercise beginning with planning the exercise, assigning simulated entities to the hardware available, starting the execution of the scenario, recording the execution for After Action Review (AAR), and finishing with conducting the AAR with the training audience.

“Soldier touch points are critical to this development process as they ensure that the project is meeting the end users’ needs,” said Dr. Christina Bouwens, Deputy Program Manager, VT MAK. Warfighters participated as role players interacting in a common scenario on the Ft. Hood terrain controlling ground vehicles running on RVCT hardware through a hardware abstraction layer, and dismounted units using RVCT Soldier stations.

The TMT provided an intuitive, user-friendly capability that integrated unit training information with training readiness requirements, prepped and launched training activities, and drove assessment activities, all from a single workstation.

MAK demonstrated progress toward the longer-term scalability goals – including a cloud-based demonstration of VR-Forces integrated with Improbable’s SpatialOS framework; and an on-premise preview of MAK’s internally-developed scalability framework – managing and communicating with more than two million entities.

Integration with STE-related Science & Technology (S&T) technology was shown, including: The Leidos-developed Behavior Service for including authoritative legacy data sources and behaviors into the TSS and TMT; and The Augmented REality Sandtable (ARES) visualization capability demonstrating an augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) view of the simulation environment for collaborative training coordination.

The STE Common Synthetic Environment project continues to make significant progress, paving the way for a successful initial operational capability. MAK will provide another report after the next assessment in March, and will continue to be transparent about the process as it develops.

Researchers are seeking out ways to innovate the lithium-ion battery.

Laurence Fishburne is best known for his versatile skillset as a performer. Most are familiar with his portrayals in Hollywood hits such as “Boyz n the Hood,” and “Passengers.” The American actor also lends his talents to the educational show “Behind The Scenes”. The show interviews industry professionals about a broad spectrum of issues affecting people from all over the country. A new episode coming to the segment will discuss technology advances in lithium-ion batteries.

The battery plays a crucial role in powering many modern devices. A large number of the tools utilized in today’s world that make day-to-day tasks more comfortable and more efficient rely on the battery for energy. Cell phones, cars, smart homes, and wearable tech are all dependent on batteries. While batteries are a more efficient resource than fossil fuel, there still lies the problem with batteries not lasting very long.
