Kelowna-based TerraSense Analytics awarded $977,439 contract through the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program

TerraSense Analytics announced today they have been awarded a $977,439 contract through the Department of National Defence’s Defence’s Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program. This contract will fund the next phase of development for its Multimodal Input Surveillance & Tracking (MIST) product, an advanced airborne surveillance system developed by TerraSense Analytics.

MIST is a computer vision system that uses artificial intelligence to watch the cameras onboard surveillance aircraft in real-time, fusing thermal and colour imagery and automatically identifying and tracking targets. Designed with input from airborne sensor operators in the Canadian Armed Forces and around the world, MIST uses deep learning to improve operator situational awareness and enable analysts on the ground to search and recall precise moments from thousands of hours of footage in an instant.

Working closely with Dr. Zheng Liu at the University of British Columbia, and Erik Blasch of the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the TerraSense Analytics team will spend the year developing and testing a working prototype of MIST. “Our goal is to provide concrete validation of the system onboard real aircraft, using real sensors, detecting real targets, by the end of this year”, says TerraSense Analytics CTO Jozsef Hamari.

As the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) role becomes increasingly important to the Canadian Armed Forces, even older aircraft are being outfitted with advanced camera packages. TerraSense Analytics, an artificial intelligence company with extensive experience processing imagery from airborne and remote sensors, will enable analysts to find the right intelligence quickly and easily, without requiring thousands of hours spent annotating video by hand.

This will be the second phase of development for MIST, which received its original funding from the Government of Canada in 2018 and has gone from concept to prototype in the time since.

About IDEaS

The Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program is an investment of $1.6 billion over 20 years aimed at meeting the demands of today’s complex global defence and security environment. The program enables Canada to deliver the capabilities needed for a strong and agile military by providing financial support to foster innovation through contracts, contribution agreements and grants. The IDEaS program helps innovators by supporting analysis, funding research, and developing processes that facilitate access to knowledge. Clinerion and iClusion partner to boost the identification and recruitment of more patients into clinical trials.

Together, the partners’ joint mission is to increase patient participation in studies to its full potential by optimizing protocol design, enabling study sites to efficiently start up their trials locally and plan and meet realistic patient recruitment and therefore total timeline targets.

This new clinical trial optimization partnership also facilitates a total study site network activation for all trials, beyond the study sites already chosen to participate, by facilitating online referral and activation services.

iClusion makes clinical research accessible for physicians and their patients by connecting sponsors and their research protocols with research sites. Connecting all stakeholders and automating standardized local approval procedures in one networked platform accelerates total study timelines and makes innovative products available to more patients faster.

Clinerion makes real-world patient data accessible for analysis so that study protocols can be optimized with real patients in mind and real-world patient data can drive study feasibility and patient recruitment.

Both iClusion and Clinerion maintain cloud platforms which bring together participants from across the clinical study ecosystem, comprising sponsors, hospitals and clinicians, and treating physicians and patients. However, the partners offer complementary support and solutions throughout the product development process.

“Never in history has the R&D engine in pharmaceuticals been more productive, driving a pool of promising new agents,” says Edwin Klumper, CEO of iClusion. “The growing pipeline of targeted and personalized medicines puts tremendous pressure on more trials to be conducted in smaller, more well-defined patient populations. As a result, patient recruitment has become the bottleneck, nowadays, which is delaying progress and withholding many patients from the benefits of participation. I am pleased that Clinerion and iClusion are partnering to start tackling the identification and recruitment of the right patients into the right studies to bolster trial conduct and innovation.”

“Our collaboration re-emphasizes that patients are at the heart of clinical development and clinical trial conduct,” says Ian Rentsch, CEO of Clinerion. “Our combined services cover trials operations from protocol design through operational feasibility, site selection, local approvals, startup of study sites and patient recruitment. This partnership is therefore ideally positioned to optimize and advance protocols faster, reach more study sites and offer more patients the possibility to participate in research.”

Clinerion and iClusion will present their combined offerings at the upcoming SCRS’s European Site Solution Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, on March 9-10, 2020. Clinerion will be at Booth #25.

About iClusion

Clinical trials don’t just advance science; they also serve as in-the-moment treatment alternatives for patients. iClusion aims to make the clinical trial process faster, more effective, and more accessible for cancer patients and oncologists. The Trial Eye platform of iClusion connects study sponsors, hospitals, physicians, and their patients in a closed-loop ecosystem, non-existing today. Rather than each group remaining siloed, iClusion’s clinical study infrastucture invites various stakeholders to connect and interact speeding up clinical trial processes and patient recruitment and therefore the entire drug development process. iClusion believes its new model is nothing short of revolutionary. It’s the only initiative designed from the viewpoint of the 2 most important stakeholders within clinical trials; the patient and their treating physician. If they have easy access to clinical trials and can participate, drug development can speed up. The Social Impact and Goal is that each cancer patient should be offered the opportunity to participate in an experimental treatment whereas today only 5% of patients do get this opportunity to a last life line.

Blackbird Technologies and M2M Solutions Settle IoT Patent Case

This patent describes an important improvement to the ever-expanding world of IoT technology. We are very pleased that the inventor of this cutting edge technology continues to see the value of her important contribution.

Blackbird Technologies has settled a patent infringement lawsuit related to programmable wireless communications devices.

In August 2014, M2M Solutions, LLC initiated a patent infringement action against Telit Wireless Solutions Inc. (“Telit”) in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware (14-cv-1103). The patent at issue is U.S. Patent No. 8,648,717 (“the ‘717 patent”), entitled “Programmable Communicator.” The ‘717 patent relates to an innovative machine-to-machine module that controls communication between two or more machines. These machine-to-machine communications encompass a variety of applications in which one machine is able to remotely monitor a second machine in a relatively autonomous fashion. In June 2017, Blackbird Technologies acquired the ‘717 patent and was joined as a plaintiff to the action. The parties settled the case in January 2020.

Wendy Verlander, President and CEO of Blackbird Technologies, said, “This patent describes an important improvement to the ever-expanding world of IoT technology. It is prevalent in fields such as automated meter reading, asset tracking and fleet management, industrial automation and controls, and the remote control of certain consumer devices and appliances. We are very pleased that the inventor of this cutting edge technology continues to see the value of her important contribution.”

About Blackbird Technologies

Blackbird Technologies provides a unique opportunity for individual inventors and small companies to realize the value of their patents. By using in-house expertise, rather than expensive law firms, Blackbird Technologies is able to litigate at reduced costs and achieve results that equal or exceed what a law firm would recover. This company creates efficiencies that make it possible for individual inventors and small companies to see the end game – realizing the true value of their patents.

nok Expands Its Pioneering Experiential Marketing Platform Following Latest Round of Investor Funding

“We’ve built a retrofitted sampling model for products that are too expensive to give away but are too new and too good not to try before buying,” said nok co-founder/CEO Bobby Wann.

With consumers increasingly basing their purchasing decisions on word of mouth and first-hand knowledge, nok is pioneering a new model of retail supply chain and commerce through “circular on-demand free trials.” Using nok’s services, people can try a range of products from leading brands, at no charge, for three days before buying or returning them with no commitment.

nok recently completed a round of investor funding led by Moonshots Capital and Greycroft with follow-on from Village Global, bringing nok’s total capital to $4 million. With this infusion, the company is accelerating its growth in the New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco markets.

nok is the first to successfully offer consumers seamless and worry-free trial experiences, while solving the logistical challenges, high costs and inventory reductions traditionally associated with product trials and returns. The company was founded in 2017 by CEO Bobby Wann and COO Renato Anselmi Ricci, two technology entrepreneurs committed to redefining the relationship between brands and consumers.

“Easy and immediate access to information has made consumers savvier and turned many off to the effects of advertising, branding and even influencer marketing,” Wann said. “They know all the gimmicks and don’t want to spend hours reading fake reviews. They would rather build trust through service and they find nothing more refreshing than putting their hands on something and seeing the evidence for themselves. We’ve built a retrofitted sampling model for products that are too expensive to just give away but are too new and too good not to try before buying.”

nok operates as a white label hosting and check-out service, with no need for a brand to design or integrate any new technology into its e-commerce functions. Although customers need to submit their credit card information to begin the trial experience, there is no card authorization conducted or charges processed – enabling a 100% free home tryout activation with no buyer’s remorse.

The company’s successful and profitable approach is attractive to investors as well as partner brands. “Any new investment opportunity of course has to make business sense but, more importantly, we also look for demonstrated leadership and extraordinary vision,” said Kelly Perdew at Moonshots. “The nok founders deliver on both criteria.” Dana Settle at Greycroft added, “This is a massive market opportunity to not only meet changing consumer behaviors, but to also transform how companies have thought about their supply chain for decades.”

The most recent clients to launch with nok are TUMI, the leading international travel and lifestyle brand, and coffee products manufacturer Lavazza.

“In our experience, customers’ expectations have evolved faster than retailers have been able to keep up with,” said Charlie Cole, Chief Digital Officer, TUMI. “We used to debate offering free shipping with a threshold, and then Amazon Prime came along. The lesson learned is don’t wait for someone else to exceed your potential customers’ expectations. Partnering with nok allows our customers to test out a product before making a purchase, letting the TUMI product speak for itself.”

Brands are promoting the nok service by building new landing pages for their websites or simply adding the hook into their existing advertising and channel marketing campaigns.

Once products are ordered, delivery is completed within three hours using on-demand couriers and nok uses environmentally sustainable delivery options like bicycles or electric scooters whenever possible. If a product is returned, nok will pick it up at the customer’s door, take it to their warehouse and get it ready for the next customer to try within 48 hours.

In the United States, nok has established warehousing and delivery infrastructures in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles and the company has run hundreds of test trials for three new clients which are expected to go live in the coming weeks. The company has the capability to rapidly expand and reach 30 major U.S. metropolitan markets.

“nok can do for high-end products what free samples have done for consumer packaged goods and beauty brands for the past 50 years,” Wann said. “For almost all large brands, nothing is more difficult to maneuver than their supply chains and more are realizing it makes sense to let us do it for them. We see ourselves as a new high-engagement channel, turning what used to be heavy losses from returned products into sales and profitable long-term customer relationships.”

Enterprises Are Creating Over 6,500 Files Containing Sensitive Data Every Day, Reveals Lepide 2020 State of Data Security Report

The State of Data Security 2020

The State of Data Security 2020

All it takes is for one file containing sensitive data to be copied outside of the organization for a serious data breach to occur

Lepide, a leading provider of data security solutions, today released a report that reveals an alarming insight into the risks facing data security in enterprises across the globe, as well as insight into how unprepared most organizations are to mitigate those risks. In particular, the report, 2020 State of Data Security Report from Lepide, found that enterprises have, on average, more than 6,500 files containing sensitive data created, and more than 1,600 file server modifications made every day.

Read the full report.

The report, which was based on more than 500 Risk Analysis Reports conducted by Lepide over the course of 2019 for customers and potential customers on their critical infrastructure, highlights several key problems that need addressing in the world of data security and compliance, in particular:

  • The lack of visibility over where sensitive data is, what sensitive data is being created and which users have access to this sensitive data.
  • Large numbers of privileged users with access to sensitive data that should not have or do not need this access.
  • Stale and sensitive data that is improperly managed and protected in accordance with compliance standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, PCI, CCPA and more.
  • Huge attack surfaces created by inactive users.
  • Huge numbers of users with passwords that never expire creating easing hiding places for hackers.

The findings from the report include:

  • 71% of companies have over 1,600 file server modifications made every day.
  • 44% of companies have over 100,000 failed logons every day.
  • 71% of companies have over 1,000 inactive users.
  • 31% of companies have over 1,000 users with passwords that never expire.
  • 91% of companies have over 1,000 “stale”, sensitive files.
  • 77% of companies have over 5,000 “stale”, sensitive files.

“This report confirms what we have been seeing for years with enterprises of all sizes,” says Aidan Simister, CEO of Lepide. “All too often organizations have struggled to determine where their sensitive data is, who has access to it and what their users are doing with it. Native tools do not provide this insight and many vendors are far too expensive or too complicated to effectively deploy and gleam useful insights from.

All it takes is for one file containing sensitive data to be copied outside of the organization for a serious data breach to occur. We hope that this report can raise awareness about how much more visibility is required over data to detect threats, prevent breaches and achieve and maintain compliance standards.”

ABOUT THE 2020 STATE OF DATA SECURITY REPORT

Over the course of 2019, Lepide conducted over 500 risk assessments with enterprises (over 1000 employees) in 17 different countries across the globe. The findings have been combined to shed some light on the current state of data security in 2020.

ABOUT LEPIDE RISK ANALYSIS REPORTS

Lepide performs frequent, completely free, Data Risk Analysis Reports for their potential customers that allow them to determine where their sensitive data is, how much of it is at risk, and provides real steps towards achieving better data security and compliance.
