Opto 22 announces groov EPIC firmware version 2.0

Opto 22’s latest groov EPIC firmware adds support for groov RIO edge I/O

Today, Opto 22 announced the second major version of its firmware for groov EPIC®, the edge programmable industrial controller for automation applications and the industrial internet of things (IIoT). The groov EPIC 2.0 firmware includes updates to both of groov EPIC’s real-time control engines and provides an under-the-hood refresh to many ecosystem components. This update also increases the reach of the control platform with support for groov RIO®, Opto 22’s new industrial edge I/O module, which supports 61,260 unique I/O combinations in a standalone unit.

With groov EPIC 2.0, Opto 22’s PAC Control™, a flowchart-based, multi-tasking control engine, is updated to version R10.3a; and 3S Software’s CODESYS® Runtime, an IEC 61131-3 compliant runtime engine, is updated to version 3.5.15.10. Both control options are capable of executing user-configured, high-speed, closed-loop control programs for process control, manufacturing, and OEM machines. In combination with the jointly updated design software—PAC Project™ Suite 10.3 and Opto 22’s CODESYS Library Package 2.0.0.0, which is compatible with the CODESYS Development System v3.5 SP15—these updates allow the number of groov EPIC I/O points to be expanded with an unlimited number of groov RIO remote I/O modules. Each groov RIO module is an independent edge I/O unit that can sense and control a wide variety of traditional wired I/O signals or devices from anywhere on a connected Ethernet network.

groov RIO modules accept a software-configurable mix of analog inputs (volt, millivolt, milliamp), temperature inputs (ICTD, TC), discrete and powered switch inputs, analog outputs (volt, milliamp), discrete outputs, and normally-open or -closed relay outputs. Each module is also capable of executing up to four PID loops independently of the EPIC controller.

Direct interoperability between the groov EPIC system and the new groov RIO modules gives engineers, technicians, and developers more options for distributed and direct-to-cloud I/O processing. In addition to communicating I/O signals to the EPIC, each groov RIO module provides basic and advanced I/O signal processing, database transaction capability, and communications with other control systems, web services, and cloud IoT platforms, independently of groov EPIC. Both groov RIO and Opto 22’s field-proven SNAP I/O system are compatible remote I/O with the groov EPIC 2.0 firmware.

With groov EPIC 2.0 and groov RIO, applications like remote condition monitoring, building management systems (BMS), and data center infrastructure monitoring (DCIM)—applications that need to move many real-world signals into on-premises or cloud-based software—become easier than ever before, simplifying the complex technology stack and cross-functional skillset previously required for these applications.

The update rounds out this significant platform expansion with upgrades and improvements to many basic system components, providing better user management controls, more flexible serial device detection, and more stable VPN and MQTT performance. Third-party applications are also updated, including Ignition (7.9.13) and Node-RED (1.0.3). As a final note with this release, Opto 22 has added the popular, open-source Mosquitto™ to its cryptographically signed repository, providing users a proven, no-cost option for adding an MQTT broker to groov EPIC.

Availability

groov EPIC firmware 2.0 is available now for all current users through manage.groov.com. Complete upgrade instructions are available in the groov EPIC User’s Guide. For new customers, all groov EPICs now ship with this latest firmware version.

PAC Project Basic 10.3 and the Opto 22 Library Package for CODESYS 2.0.0.0 are also available as free downloads.

About groov EPIC

groov EPIC is an edge programmable industrial controller (EPIC). More than a PLC, PAC, or PC, it is a Linux®-based processor in a compact industrial enclosure, with local and remote I/O and wide-ranging programming and communications options. In addition to real-time control, groov EPIC provides the connectivity many of today’s projects require: it connects to field sensors and devices, legacy PLC systems, software applications, remote equipment, and cloud services for anything from weather conditions to big data analytics and predictive maintenance.

Powercast and Liquid X Announce Printed Electronics Venture to Enable Durable, Washable e-Textiles that Seal in Wireless Charging Electronics

Printed circuitry and mounted components for smart athletic shirt prototype CES 2020.

Top to bottom: LEDs mounted to printed traces, Powercast’s Powerharvester RF wireless receiver chip (black) and tuning components, and the printed 6” Powerharvesting receiving antenna.

Powercast Corporation, the leader in radio-frequency (RF)-based long-range over-the-air wireless power technology, and Liquid X, an advanced manufacturer of functional metallic inks with prototype-to-production design and manufacturing capabilities, today announced a printed electronics venture to enable garment manufacturers to easily integrate wireless power functionality into durable, flexible, high performance and washable e-textiles.

Utilizing Liquid X’s proprietary ink technology, manufacturers can print circuitry directly onto a garment, add Powercast’s wireless power technology and a battery, and seal this all into the garment during the manufacturing process. The two companies’ goal is to enable cost-effective manufacturing of durable e-textiles, with battery-powered features such as health and wellness, movement monitoring, or LED-based illumination embedded directly into garments, that consumers can conveniently recharge over the air, and wash, without having to remove a battery pack.

Today’s smart garments often snap electronics onto the garment along with battery packs that users must detach before washing. With the combined technologies of Liquid X and Powercast, now manufacturers can integrate the electronics directly into the garment. First, circuitry is printed on the fabric using Liquid X’s proprietary particle-free ink, including Powercast’s RF wireless receiving antenna. Next, Powercast’s Powerharvester® RF wireless power receiver chip, a battery, and other components are mounted onto the printed traces. Finally, an encapsulant provides a high strength waterproof bond to seal in all of the electronics.

To recharge the battery, consumers simply place a Powercast RF transmitter in the closet or drawer where they store their smart wearable. It transmits RF energy over the air to the RF receiver embedded in the wearable, which then converts it to direct current (DC) to charge the battery.

The two Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based companies showcased at CES in January 2020 a wirelessly rechargeable smart athletic shirt prototype that illuminates using printed electronics, embedded power harvesting technology, and LEDs powered over the air up to 10 feet away from the wireless transmitter.

Telepsychology as a Lifeline In The Age of COVID-19

We may be the only people they see that are not wearing a mask.

For older adults isolated in the age of COVID, access to mental health clinicians can make all the difference when familiar connections are lost. This is particularly true for the tens of thousands of nursing home residents across the U.S. now restricted to their rooms.

For a lucky few though, voice-assisted technology has eased connection to psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors. One provider of such technology — the New York City based startup Soundmind — has been facilitating video-based telepsychology sessions using its simple plug-and-play platform delivered through Amazon’s Alexa and Echo Show.

Through this connection, Soundmind’s solution has allowed clinicians like psychologist Tina Chan to reach nursing home patients in hard-hit COVID areas like Westchester County, New York.

“My colleagues and I were concerned that our physical presence during this time made us potential vectors of infection. The care we provide to residents does not depend on physical touch like nurses and aides. We knew we could continue to provide psychological services from a distance as long as the right tools were available to us.”

“We were scrambling trying to find a reliable solution especially for our Covid patients where, even though we appear on screen, we may be the only people they see that are not wearing a mask. I’m so glad that a system like Soundmind was available. Now, all my patients need to do to initiate a session with me is to use their voice.”

“When we heard psychologists were using our system for therapy sessions in Westchester we were thrilled,” said Erum Khan, Soundmind’s CEO. “Our platform and Alexa experience were designed to be adopted quickly and used in a very simple way. Clinicians can easily connect with the Echo Show device synced to Soundmind in the patient’s room and a trusted connection can be made privately and securely.”

In addition to its simplicity, one benefit of using voice-enabled platforms like Soundmind is privacy. Seniors know that a Soundmind enabled session is trusted because only individuals that are approved by the senior can be part of the Soundmind care circle.

In March of this year, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) waived many of the provisions that restricted the use of telehealth by clinicians in order to keep medical services active under stay at home orders.

Under these changes, patients do not need to live in rural or underserved areas to be treated via telehealth, and it can be conducted in the patient’s home versus a clinical site of care. Clinicians may also be reimbursed by Medicare for telehealth visits if it is conducted on video-based platforms such as Skype, FaceTime, and Alexa Echo Show.

Telehealth is especially relevant for supporting the health of seniors in residential living where opportunities for social connection – such as meals – have been reduced or eliminated. According to a February 2020 report released by the National Academy of Sciences “lacking social connection— and in particular, scoring high on measures of social isolation—is associated with a significantly increased risk for early death from all causes.”

And it’s not just professional clinical contact that can have a positive impact. A 2019 study published by The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reported that older adults that used video chat had about half the likelihood of depressive symptoms at a two-year follow-up compared to non-users and users of e-mail, social media and instant messaging.

However, even with telehealth’s new permissions, many seniors in residential living lack access to video-based technology. For those that do, help may not be at hand if telemedicine sessions are difficult to start or manage, or if connectivity fails.

Recognizing this, CMS announced at the end of April 2020 that telepsychology sessions that are conducted using telephone or voice-assisted devices could be reimbursed as a temporary measure for the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a huge win for those with physical disabilities who only can communicate using these devices, or for those who may not have a video-based device,” said Dr. Chan. “So many more people can now be supported.”

“The change really excites us because we know that many residents in need are only using Soundmind’s platform through Alexa devices that do not have video.” Added Ms. Khan “We look forward to continuing to support the work of mental health professionals that need to make these new types of connections with their patients during this crisis.”

About Soundmind:

Soundmind enables senior care providers and families to easily and securely leverage voice assistants like Alexa to deliver smarter care. Now simply by speaking, older adults and staff alike have instant access to concierge services, communications, and content to improve quality of life. Tubeaux® Introduces Innovative Retail-Oriented Premium Cigar Humidor/Kiosk Program

“Until now, cigar aficionados have been unable to acquire the premium cigars they want in the many lifestyle venues they frequent.” – Randall “Barton” Howard, Founder and Inventor of the Tubeaux Solution

With its patent pending technology, the Tubeaux system is designed to deliver exceptional margin potential and profitability.

The Tubeaux program is ideally suited for tobacco products wholesalers and distributors and supply chain providers with existing retail clients with solutions that can be tailored for a large number of retail locations, or just few; even for someone who just wants one for his “man cave.”

“Until now, cigar aficionados have been unable to acquire the premium cigars they want in the many lifestyle venues they frequent,” states Randall “Barton” Howard, founder and inventor of the Tubeaux solution. “The new Tubeaux humidor/kiosks are the perfect solution to satisfy that unmet demand.”

The remote-managed Tubeaux program offers remote-managed, turnkey solutions that include humidor/kiosks in a variety of sizes, premium UPC-coded cigar brands, automatic humidor monitoring for quality control, automated inventory tracking and replenishment, and sales reporting to identify purchasing trends and product mix. In addition, Tubeaux will also be providing marketing support that features manufactured shelf cards, highlighting brands and ratings, “cigar of the month” based on manufacturer-driven products and events, sales promotions with customized signage highlighting special offers, and “swag” signage, clocks, wine pairings and more.

The highly configurable program enables the units to be placed with easy access to cigar aficionados in locations like golf pro shops, hotel lobbies and pools, casinos, convenience stores, retail spaces, and many more. Tubeaux custom humidor/kiosks featuring exclusive “pusher” technology can be configured to easily fit in retail countertop spaces from three inches to seven feet wide. Floor standing units are available up to five feet in height. Customers can also order easy-to-assembly individual DIY units to meet their specific needs.

Tubeaux humidor/kiosks are available for stocking with premium cigar brands like Camacho, Macanudo, Partagas, Monte Cristo, Espinosa, Cohiba and many others.

Howard concludes, “Whether you’re a wholesaler, distributor, supply chain partner or independent retailer, Tubeaux can partner with you for a custom program that will deliver results that are four times the national sales average.”
