New Study Reveals 19 Percent of U.S. Adults Have Tried Virtual Reality

News Image

“VR’s captivating users for it’s revolutionary jump from traditional content formats. But you have to see it to believe it, and it’s hard to convey that experience to non-users through traditional marketing.”- Mike Boland, Chief Analyst of ARtillery Intelligence

Thrive Analytics and ARtillery Intelligence today released a new report: VR Usage & Consumer Attitudes, Wave IV. ARtillery Intelligence authored survey questions and a narrative report while Thrive Analytics administered the survey through its established survey engine and ongoing Virtual Reality Monitor™ research.

Highlights include the fact that 19 percent of consumers have used VR, up from 16 percent in last year’s study. More importantly, they’re using it often: 31 percent of respondents use VR at least monthly. This is a telling indication of VR’s potential, given that active use is a key success factor tied to revenue and user retention.

VR users are also highly satisfied: 55 percent reported extreme or moderate satisfaction. However it’s not all good news. Non-VR users have relatively low interest in VR ownership, with 59 percent citing their reason for disinterest as just not interested. This disparity between user satisfaction and non-user disinterest represents key marketing and logistical challenges for VR.

“VR’s immersive format is a double-edged sword,” said Mike Boland, Chief Analyst of ARtillery Intelligence. “It’s captivating users for it’s revolutionary jump from traditional content formats. But you have to see it to believe it, and it’s hard to convey that experience to non-users through traditional marketing. This will be alleviated over time through more cultural acclimation to VR and lowering access friction through things like standalone headsets.”

Standalone VR – embodied by Oculus Quest, Oculus Go and other emerging headsets — don’t require a separate and costly PC and also eschew cumbersome wires and the need to set up positional tracking systems. Though still early, standalone VR already shows worthwhile market traction in the hardware itself, as well as engagement levels and software/game sales.

The Virtual Reality Monitor™ applies Thrive Analytics’ acumen and time-tested practices in survey research. The VR survey in this wave (Wave IV) included a sample of more than 1,000 U.S. adults. Furthermore, four completed waves of research now enable robust longitudinal analysis and trend evaluation. Thrive Analytics and ARtillery Intelligence also produce a corresponding AR report which will be published next month.

“AR and VR are still in early-adoption phases,” said Thrive Analytics managing partner Jason Peaslee. “There are still technology challenges, but we think AR & VR have the ability to transform the way people work, connect, and learn. We’re excited about the prospects, and committed to measuring them.”

MobileDemand Donates 300 Rugged iPad Cases to The County of Los Angeles, Assisting Isolated COVID-19 Patients to Visit Virtually with Friends, Family, and Medical Staff

An isolated patient consults with a medical staff member via video chat.

“We are incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to help patients connect with loved ones, reduce COVID-19 exposure occurrences of front-line medical staff, while improving productivity with our iPad cases,” said MobileDemand President, Matt Miller.

MobileDemand is pleased to announce the donation of 300 rugged iPad cases to The County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services (DHS). The donation is through a partnership with the Annenberg Foundation, Brilliant Corners and MobileDemand. The 300 iPads and rugged iPad cases will be used in DHS hospitals, including Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, to facilitate patient-family and patient-medical staff communication during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led the DHS hospitals to limit patient visiting by family and loved ones to prevent exposure and the spread of disease, as have hospitals across the country.  While there are some exceptions, such as for the birth of a child or death of a patient, visitation is not being permitted for the vast majority of patients and not at all for COVID-19 patients.

MobileDemand’s Mobile Patient Virtual Presence Tablet (VPT) solution personalizes patient care, reduces front-line medical staff exposure from illness, and reduces PPE use. The healthcare iPad 10.2″ cases are designed to protect against damage if dropped. The case comes with an adjustable easel attached to the back, providing effortless viewing for patients who are too weak to hold an iPad and freeing healthcare staff from having to hold the tablet for patients. Additionally, the case is designed to be easily mounted to mobile carts, which can be rolled into an isolated patient’s room.

“The engagement of loved ones during hospitalization has been shown to improve clinical outcomes,” said DHS Director, Dr. Christina Ghaly. “Clinical staff identified a role for virtual visiting through technology in order to facilitate this family involvement. The generous donations by the Annenberg Foundation and MobileDemand will help support this critical element of our patients’ care.”

While social distancing has been successful in flattening the curve of the COVID-19 surge in Los Angeles County, it is anticipated that this surge will continue for several months. With this gift, physicians and nurses will be able to place an iPad in the room of isolated COVID and other critically ill patients for the duration of the admission and reduce potential exposure and use of personal protective equipment going in and out of the room.

“We are incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to help patients connect with loved ones, reduce COVID-19 exposure occurrences of front-line medical staff, while improving productivity with our iPad cases,” said MobileDemand President, Matt Miller. “In these trying times it’s important that we support those impacted by this pandemic and we thank everyone involved in this worthy effort.”

Advanced Frequency Switching with RF/ Microwave Signal Generators

Berkeley Nucleonics is a Precision instrumentation manufacturer that has been supplying labs across the globe for over 50 years.

Demands in switching performance are critical for applications such as Radar Simulation, Phased Array Antenna Testing, and Beam Forming. Fast switching speed is essential when users wish to generate a sequence of RF pulses with a well-defined frequency, power, and phase. Using Phase Coherent Switching and defined Phase Memory, radar signal simulation can be further refined to address electronic countermeasures, effects of environmental disturbances (clutter) and issues at various points along the signal path. Radar systems are now required to address multiple functions, from search to scan to track to map.

Berkeley Nucleonics Corporation offers the most comprehensive package for high-speed frequency switching in 6GHz, 12GHz, 20GHz, 33GHz and 40GHz signal generators. The company’s flagship Multi-Channel Signal Source, the Model 855B, can now be ordered with Phase-Coherent Switching (Option PHS). This option allows users to maintain a relative phase relationship between several channels when frequencies are toggled. A simple example can be seen in the attached figure 1.

With 2 phase-coherent signals at the frequency (F1) and relative phase (ⱷ), signal 2 undergoes frequency switching (F1, F2, F1). Following the sequence, the 2 signals once again have the same relative phase (ⱷ).

Additional work has been done on the phase memory of the output signal. With phase memory, users can run a frequency shift (F1, F2, F1) and the signal’s phase resumes at the position it would have been had it run continuously at the frequency (F1). A simple example of phase memory can be seen in the attached figure 2.

The Model 855B with PHS helps meet these objectives by advancing your RF/Microwave signal generation capability.

Eagle Eye Networks Completes Mexico City City-Wide Surveillance Project, Deploying Over 13,000 Cameras in 4 Months

News Image

Eagle Eye Networks, the global leader in cloud video surveillance, announced today one of the fastest completions of a large scale, fully integrated city-wide surveillance program, installing 13,720 cameras in 4 months. This project has been a large success for Mexico City C5, contributing to Mexico City’s larger “Citizen Safety” mobile application. This mobile application facilitates content sharing for more effective neighborhood watch and a panic SOS button.

“Effective citywide surveillance is more than installing cameras in a few key locations, it’s about creating a platform that meets the unique needs of each municipality. In partnership with Eagle Eye Networks we leveraged the Eagle Eye Video API and SDK to customize a unique web application that is designed to integrate fixed, mobile body worn, and vehicle cameras into one interface, providing an unprecedented level of insight and awareness into our cities operations, ” said Jaime Abad Valdenebro, CEO, Omnicloud.mx.

4G connectivity with Eagle Eye Networks’ bandwidth optimization was utilized in order to facilitate this quick deployment, installing approximately 250 cameras per day at its peak. The cameras are all operational, remotely monitored, and providing safety and security to citizens today.

This fast-paced install occurred amidst the global supply chain challenges caused by COVID-19, however, Eagle Eye Networks’ strong partnership with both the Reseller, Omnicloud.mx, and suppliers provided alternatives and solutions to keep the project on schedule.

Eagle Eye Networks solution was chosen because the Eagle Eye Cloud Video API Platform provides an open solution that allows integration of new technologies (AI, advanced analytics, search, license plate recognition), new suppliers, and new cameras at any time. Future and cybersecurity proofing the city’s investment and eliminating the headaches associated with managing large premise based data centers was crucial in their decision.

“When deploying a city-wide surveillance project, scalability, retention, and cellular transmission must be considered. Eagle Eye’s cloud video retention and massive on demand scalability make it ideal for large scale deployments. To operate your own large data center system for video recording is expensive and challenging. With Eagle Eye’s subscription service we provide a more robust and lower cost answer for large scale deployments. Furthermore, our open platform provides a future proof solution, integrating AI, video analytics, and advanced search at the click of a mouse,” said Dean Drako, CEO of Eagle Eye Networks.

“More than half of the world’s population resides in cities, creating an increased demand for smart, accurate insights to help streamline everyday operations including public safety, traffic flow management, infrastructure and transportation. Enormous amounts of data collection, aggregation, and storage are necessary to drive the deep analysis that is required to produce these smart insights. The only way to efficiently manage this data is to aggregate and analyze in the cloud,” said Jeff Kessler, Managing Director of Imperial Capital and Publisher of the Security Industry Annual Report. The Eagle Eye Cloud is a robust, scalable and cost-effective solution, purpose-built to support the data storage and analysis demands that city-wide deployments require.
