Rockler Introduces Heavy-Duty Portable Drill Guide and Self-Centering Drill Vise

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has introduced a heavy-duty drill guide and accessory vise that combine the control and precision of a stationary drill press with the portability of a handheld drill.

Rockler Introduces Heavy-Duty Portable Drill Guide and Self-Centering Drill Vise

“We wanted to take the drill guide to the next level by offering the perfect combination of precision and portability. Everything about it is bigger and better – and for some users, it could eliminate the expense of a larger drill press.” – Steve Krohmer, vice president of product development.

Rockler Woodworking and Hardware has introduced a heavy-duty drill guide and accessory vise that combine the control and precision of a stationary drill press with the portability of a handheld drill.

At 14-1/2″ tall, the Portable Drill Guide is more robust than many other drill guides on the market. Steel guide posts provide heft and stability, and the beefy aluminum chuck carriage maintains alignment for smooth, accurate drilling. While other guides typically have 3/8″ chucks, the smooth ball-bearing chuck on the Portable Drill Guide fits bit shanks up to 1/2″ in diameter. It offers more than 8″ in spindle travel for deep drilling, and the large pass-through opening in the sturdy base allows drilling workpieces of virtually any length.

“We wanted to take the drill guide to the next level by offering the perfect combination of precision and portability,” said Steve Krohmer, Rockler’s vice president of product development. “Everything about it is bigger and better – and for some users, it could eliminate the expense of a larger drill press.”

In addition to the larger 1/2″ bit capacity, the drill guide’s chuck features a 1/4″ hex shank at the other end that fits any handheld drill and works with quick-change chucks for speedy connection and removal of the drill.

The guide also features a stop for setting drilling depth for repeat applications, as well as V-shaped supports in the base that center dowels and other round stock under the bit. The easy-to-grip handle and knob have rubber overmolds to provide a solid, comfortable grip, and they allow the user to lock in the drilling angle anywhere from directly vertical to 60°, using the clearly marked angle lines.

The Self-Centering Drill Vise can be combined with the Portable Drill Guide to hold workpieces up to 3″ x 3″ for precise drilling in any length of stock.

Jaws at both ends open and close in sync to perfectly center the workpiece — making the vise ideal for drilling turning blanks. Like the drill guide, the vise is made from durable steel and aluminum.

Although it was designed to mount to the Portable Drill Guide, the vice can also be mounted to a different base or used on its own as a typical drill press vise.

The Rockler Portable Drill Guide is priced at $149.99, while the Self-Centering Drill Vise is priced at $99.99. Rockler also offers a package deal including both new products for $219.99. The Guide and Vice are available for purchase exclusively online at http://www.rockler.com or at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware stores nationwide, as well as through the Rockler catalog. Mandel Expands Its Value by Launching Its Neuroscience-Based Listening Solution, The Listening Edge™

No two brains are alike—which means no two people hear things exactly the same way. That’s why ten talented people can leave the same meeting with quite different perceptions and remembrances of what was communicated.

Perhaps at no time in modern business history have excellent listening skills been more needed and the lack of them more costly.

Mandel Communications, the global leader in technology-driven communication skills training, is pleased to announce the launch of The Listening Edge™ workshop. This much-needed innovation is a neuroscience-based training solution, blended with a validated scientific personal listening assessment to expedite learning and skills application back on the job.

“Listening has long been recognized as a critically weak element in the human communication equation. Yet until now, business enterprises have not had a science-backed, effective solution for developing and scaling effective listening skills throughout their organizations. By default, business leaders have had to learn to live with the extraordinary costs of a huge error rate in their organizations’ human communications processes,” says Ed Musselwhite, Mandel’s CEO.

Business enterprises drain out massive amounts of money each year because of inadequate human-to-human communications. Using recognized estimates as low as $11,000 per employee per year, a mid-sized Fortune 1,000 company with 10,000 people loses $110,000,000 per year at least.

Though listening represents over half of the human communication equation, the vast majority of current communications training focuses only on the speaking activity. With the advent of Mandel’s The Listening Edge, business organizations now are able to improve both the input and output, i.e., both the give and the take, of human communications and eliminate remarkable amounts of wasted effort, time and money now caused by poor listening.

Through her research, Dana Dupuis, Mandel’s Executive Director of Research & Development, Listening Science, has emphasized the fact that listening is a brain-based function, rather than an ear function as so often envisioned.

“No two brains are alike—which means no two people hear things exactly the same way,” says Dupuis. “That’s why ten talented people can leave the same meeting with quite different perceptions and remembrances of what was communicated.

“Each of us has developed in our lives unique habits and preferences in our listening that allow some types of information to have quick and full access to our thinking, while we tend to naturally filter out or dim down other types of information that could be vital in that moment. Once we become aware of our own individually unique filters and listening gaps, we can learn to listen for, recognize and gain full value from an expanded range of input. Additionally, we can learn how to speak into other people’s listening preferences, increasing the chance that they will hear the full value of what we are trying to communicate to them.

“This ability to listen more fully and be heard more fully is what we call Listening Intelligence.” When carefully developed within an organization, employees learn to utilize and appreciate diverse thinking by calling upon the cognitive diversity of its members.

Mandel teaches people to strengthen their Listening Intelligence and use it every day at work and at home.

Integral to The Listening Edge training is an innovative cognitive-based personal listening assessment, which is scientifically grounded in research and validated, and is the first of its kind. This assessment is a powerful tool for building the foundation for Listening Intelligence skills.

These skills have extensive applications in developing leaders; training sales professionals; improving the interpersonal, collaborative and decision-making health of teams; and accelerating an organization’s cultural change by encouraging mutual understanding, inclusion and diversity.

Available as a virtual workshop, or as an in-person workshop experience, this training solution is designed to be delivered globally where needed.

With this major move into listening science, Mandel expands its expertise into the three essential communication capabilities: improving how people listen, think and speak.

This groundbreaking advancement for human communications training makes Mandel the only skills building provider to organizations with proven solutions to address the three most critical communication scenarios: presentation skills, conversation skills and listening skills.

New SWIR cameras, lights, and controllers make cost-effective multispectral imaging a reality

Smart Vision Lights’ RM140-4Z (kit) mini ring light with zones

“The machine vision industry has waited a long time to realize the full potential of cost-effective, multi-wavelength and multi-spectral imaging systems,” explains Matt Pinter, founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Smart Vision Lights.

Smart Vision Lights (SVL), a global leader in the design and manufacture of innovative LED illumination solutions, is pleased to introduce three separate lines of short wave infrared (SWIR) LED-based machine vision lights. These lights perfectly complement the recently introduced Sony IMX990 and IMX991 SenSWIR line of cost-effective imaging sensors as well as the quantum-dot SWIR Vision Systems CQD sensor line.

Sony’s IMX990 and IMX991 image sensors for industrial equipment are the first products to use the company’s new SenSWIR technology, in which photodiodes form on an indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) compound semiconductor layer connected to the silicon (Si) readout layer via Cu-Cu bonding — a design that enables high sensitivity over a broad range of wavelengths. The SenSWIR design yields a SWIR image sensor that is compact yet capable of delivering seamless image capture over wavelengths ranging from 0.4 μm to 1.7 μm. With individual sensor pricing starting below US$1000, chips like the SenSWIR line and the recently introduced CQD sensor are poised to reshape the machine vision industry through a new era of cost-effective multispectral sortation and inspection systems.

Sony’s release specifically mentions using different colored lights to capture both surface information and subsurface information using consecutive images under different illumination wavelengths. “When Sony says ‘switching light sources,’ they are referring to SWIR LED lighting where the emission spectrum is relatively narrow and allows easy selection as well as visible light for surface characteristics,” explains Steve Kinney, Director of Engineering at Smart Vision Lights.

“The machine vision industry has waited a long time to realize the full potential of cost-effective, multi-wavelength and multi-spectral imaging systems,” explains Matt Pinter, founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Smart Vision Lights. “In recent years, SVL has introduced more SWIR wavelengths – ranging from 1050 to 1550 nm – than any other machine vision lighting company. We’ve also led the industry’s development of multi-zone lights that combine different wavelengths in a single housing, as well as multi-light controllers, such as the LLM with Smart Vision Link wireless Bluetooth control technology, to bring all the elements together. When combined with cameras made from the SenSWIR or CQD sensor lines, our SWIR products empower machine vision system designers to develop powerful multispectral machine vision solutions for about the same price as a traditional color imaging machine vision solution. That’s a game changer, and we’re excited to be part of it.”

Today, Smart Vision Lights offers five different SWIR wavelengths — 1050 nm, 1200 nm, 1300 nm, 1450 nm, and 1550 nm — in three different form factors: linear, brick, and proximity spotlights.
