Apcela adds IPv6 Support for SD-WAN

Apcela engineers are successfully providing solutions not yet developed by carriers. With Apcela’s managed SD-WAN, you won’t need to worry about IPv6 issues or waiting on vendor roadmaps.

Apcela, a leader in software-defined, cloud-optimized networks, today announced the availability of an IPv6 support for global SD-WAN deployments. The lack of native support for IPv6 across OEM vendor’s SD-WAN platforms led Apcela engineers to develop a solution to support large deployments, where the availability IPv6 addressing is becoming increasingly necessary.

IPv6, or Internet Protocol version 6, is a communications protocol that provides identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the internet. IPv6 was designed to replace IPv4, which had address exhaustion issues; however, the support and adaptation varies among service providers, enterprises, and OEM vendors. According to Network World, “IPv6 adoption stands at 26% in the U.S., and in many European countries it ranges from 25 to 49%.”

According to Will George, Senior Network Engineer at Apcela, “One of our clients, a large global IoT provider, needed IPv6 support on our deployed global Cisco SD-WAN platform. As Cisco’s vEdge SD-WAN routers don’t currently offer native IPv6 support on the Local Area Network (LAN) side we established a network-based solution that enabled IPv6 tunnels to ride on the SD-WAN’s IPv4 addressing. Because we are using an IPv6 tunnel to accomplish this, the users and IPv6 routing is unaware that the traffic is traversing IPv4-only (SD-WAN) routers.”

Apcela is using Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network (DMVPN) to build the IPv6 tunnels. The IPv6 packets are encapsulated into IPv4 GRE packets, and then sent across the SD-WAN overlay. When the IPv4 traffic is delivered to the destination, the IPv4 GRE packets are un-encapsulated, leaving the IPv6 packet to continue onto its destination. As such, while the solution was designed for Cisco SD-WAN, Apcela’s IPv6 support is not limited to any specific vendor implementation and the same fundamental design can be leveraged for IPv6 capabilities with any vendor product.

George continued, “Since the DMVPN has access to the IPv4 based SD-WAN as an underlay, and the SD-WAN already correctly represented the intent for topology, redundancy, and traffic engineering, the DMVPN could silently inherit all of those characteristics. That meant we could use Anycast DMVPN Hubs for substantially less complexity than a typical global DMVPN deployment of this scale.”

In summary, Apcela engineers are successfully providing solutions not yet developed by carriers. With Apcela’s managed SD-WAN, you won’t need to worry about IPv6 issues or waiting on vendor roadmaps.

New Aluminum and Copper Coated Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors for Industrial Optical Sensing Applications

Depending on the type of inscription and coating used, these FBG sensors are suitable for operation from the cryogenic temperature of -200C to the high temperatures ratings of +100C, +300C, +450C, +550C, +700C, +850C, and +1000 Degrees Celsius.

Many measurement applications in harsh environments would benefit greatly by using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing technology, given its numerous well-known advantages such as absolute temperature measurement, rapid response, multiple sensing points on a single fiber strand with minimal mechanical burden and intrusion, as well as the critical properties of EMI immunity, spark free, and chemical inertness. However, the presence of high humidity, or high temperatures, corrosive chemicals or high mechanical stress often encountered in real life environments impose serious challenges on the glass fiber coating. Technica now offers Fiber Bragg Gratings inscribed into optical fibers coated with Aluminum, Copper and Gold for addressing an ever growing field of new applications.

“All laser writing techniques require stripping and recoating when metal is involved. To meet the demand of these applications, Technica has developed reliable processes to end-strip or window-strip acrylate, polyimide, aluminum, copper, and gold coated fibers, embed standard and high-temperature FBGs, and then recoat them with acrylate, polyimide, or gold coatings. Our proprietary fabrication processes allow for varying lengths of window stripping and recoating with very controllable and repeatable material thickness and length control”, stated Tommy Jin, Chief Operations Officer of Technica Optical Components, LLC.

“Depending on the type of inscription and coating used, these FBG sensors are suitable for operation from the cryogenic temperature of -200C to the high temperatures ratings of +100C, +300C, +450C, +550C, +700C, +850C, and +1000 Degrees Celsius” added Andrei Csipkes, Chief Executive Officer of Technica Optical Components, LLC.

These metal coated FBG sensors fabricated by excimer and/or femtosecond laser writing techniques, as required by each application, have demonstrated unique advantages in providing multipoint and multifunction measurement capabilities in an ever increasing range of applications not previously addressable by FBGs fabricated using standard manufacturing techniques. However, properly designed fiber sensor packaging is also critical for maintaining the FBG sensor’s integrity, survivability, functionality, and durability. The ability to manufacture these FBGs in strain-locked Aluminum, Copper, and Gold coatings and the availability of loose tube Inconel 625 and Stainless Steel FBG packaging probes allows Technica to offer unique and practical solutions for fiber-optic sensing in both typical (T25) and high-temperature environments (T98 ad T160).

Technica is a leading developer, manufacturer, and provider of premium quality Fiber Bragg Grating sensors and FBG array sensors in acrylate, polyimide, aluminum, copper, gold, GFRP, and PEEK coatings, and sensor packaging in Teflon, stainless steel, and Inconel probes. The company also proudly licenses and produces individual OEM custom packaged filters and sensors. Technica is headquartered in Atlanta, USA, with Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Centers in USA, Sweden, Singapore, and China.

A screenshot demonstrates how IRIS UxS can leverage high-resolution data to give drone operators a high fidelity view of the mission area, to help safely plan flight routes.

Using high-resolution data from Vricon and real-time LoS calculations, you can discover problem areas along your mission route ahead of time and adjust your flight plan to prevent problems before they happen.

Kongsberg Geospatial, developer of the TerraLens Geospatial SDK, and Vricon, a Maxar Company and geospatial intelligence data provider based in McLean, VA, announce that they will be demonstrating the world’s highest globally available 3D terrain resolution in a UAS ground control station in an upcoming online seminar hosted by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).

The webinar will address the issue of flight safety while operating drones in convoluted environments and urban airspaces by using a combination of high-resolution terrain data that accurately plots the altitude and position of obstacles like buildings and towers, and real-time LoS (line of sight) calculations. The two technologies can be useful tools for collision avoidance in situations where it is necessary to operate unmanned aircraft in near proximity to buildings, powerlines, radio towers, and other infrastructure.

The webinar will also demonstrate how real-time Line-of-Sight (LoS) calculations can be used to predict problem areas for signal propagation and to help ensure effective sensor coverage.

Operation of drones in urban environments lack the accurate presentation of a digital surface model (DSM) to enable the situational awareness to avoid buildings. “In addition to building avoidance, it can be dangerous to lose the data connection with a UAV in the middle of a mission” explains Paige Cutland, Vice President at Kongsberg Geospatial, and one of the presenters. “However, using high-resolution data from Vricon and real-time LoS calculations, you can discover problem areas along your mission route ahead of time and adjust your flight plan to prevent problems before they happen.”

The geospatial data for this demonstration and seminar is being provided by Vricon, a Maxar company. Jonas Dehlin from Vricon will describe how to obtain and set up the best available geospatial data for a given mission area and demonstrate the level of detail that can be obtained through the use of high-resolution 3D surface models.

The presentation will feature 3D maps populated with 3D surface model data, which provide an extremely high level of fidelity, and high-resolution 3D globe terrain data that is useful for Line of Sight calculations.

The online seminar will be hosted on September 17th, at 3:00pm EDT by AUVSI, and a link for registration is available on the AUVSI events website.
