VerLASE Reports Progress with the Manufacturing of MicroLED Displays

The technology promises to be the key to commercial viability

VerLASE Technologies announced today substantial progress in demonstrating its novel mass transfer process, which is the key impediment to microLED displays industry realizing its full potential. The process is based on a unique technology being developed by the Company called the Photo-Mechanical Actuation (PMA). The company asserts its process once fully implemented is capable of very high transfer thruput rates with high spatial accuracy. ”This is a pre-requisite for commercially viable production of microLED displays,” said VerLASE CTO Ajay Jain.

The deceptively simple solution utilizes a novel patent pending transfer stamp architecture along with novel chemistry to deterministically pick-up a large number of microdies, translate them to the desired drop-off location on a substrate and then dispense them with very high accuracy and speed. The chemistry is completely fab-compatible, like a photoresist. Further details can be found on the Company’s Website, as in http://www.verlase.com.

The Company’s plans to duplicate its process flow with an assortment of dies sizes from 200 X 200 sq. um for the mini-LED market, to 10 X 10 sq. um, before moving on to 5 X 5 sq. um, the ultimate goal for the large smartphone market at over 400 PPI. VerLASE plans to demonstrate the transfer of both flip-chip, and vertical thin film LED architectures.

The Company has also developed a novel (patent pending) holding tool to firmly secure the microLEDs in place while they are being worked on and release them vertically, on-demand, as needed.

Combined with the Company’s earlier work in Color Conversion, VerLASE presents a unique set of technologies for the coming future MicroLED displays.

The Company spun out of Versatilis LLC (http://www.versatls.com) with an investment by Wakley Limited, a Hong Kong based private investment group, and operates with partners around the world. Founded by Versatilis’ principals George Powch (CEO) and Ajay Jain (CTO), it focuses on technology development for large markets of the near future involving novel materials, structures and processes.

Omron releases new E3AS-HL Series CMOS photoelectric sensors with small spot or line beam sensing variations

E3AS

Omron E3AS Series sensors help manufacturers enhance flexibility and minimize maintenance needs by providing stable detection even as objects vary thanks to their CMOS image array technology.

Designed to help manufacturers enhance flexibility and minimize maintenance needs, the E3AS-HL series photoelectric sensors provide stable detection even as objects vary thanks to their CMOS image array technology and the option to use either a line beam or a spot beam model.

Complete automation solutions provider Omron Automation Americas has released a new complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) photoelectric sensor family, the E3AS-HL Series. Designed to help manufacturers enhance flexibility and minimize maintenance needs, the new sensors provide stable detection even as objects vary thanks to their CMOS image array technology and the option to use either a line beam or a spot beam model.

Stable detection can be challenge on flexible manufacturing lines, given that conventional sensors often require user adjustments to accommodate an object’s uneven shape or even require a change-out when the object’s opacity, color or pattern changes. Omron’s unique sensing technology dramatically reduces the influence of color patterns, glossiness and shape to allow for reliable detection amid changing production requirements.

The E3AS-HL Series also reduces the need for specialized engineering knowledge thanks to its simple teaching mechanism that makes setup quick and easy. Operators can complete the setup process by simply pressing the teach button, while the OLED display provides highly visible and clear status information. The sensors offer a variety of teaching options, including two-point object teaching, background suppression (BGS) teaching, foreground suppression (FGS) teaching and window setting for both FGS and BGS.

E3AS Series benefits include:

  • Stable detection for challenging parts. The E3AS-HL Series provides reliable detection of clear, highly reflective, or differently colored parts by leveraging CMOS technology.
  • Small part detection. Featuring small spot size for 500mm and 150mm sensing distance models, the E3AS-HL Series handles small part detection for most applications.
  • Selective detection. Foreground and background suppression allow for window setting and the differentiation of desired targets from surrounding parts or surfaces.
  • Ease of use. Sensor teaching is simplified with a single teach button as well as IO-Link and is easily read via a bright white OLED display showing set vs. actual detection values.
  • Data at the sensor level. With IO-Link, the E3AS-HL Series can communicate distance values in millimeters and be taught remotely to set detection thresholds. Like previous IO-Link capable sensors, output monitoring is also possible.
  • Robust design. The E3AS-HL sensors are made with SUS316L stainless steel and are suitable for use in harsh environments with IP67 and IP69K ratings.

Industry professionals seeking to learn more about the new CMOS photoelectric sensors are encouraged to visit the E3AS-HL Series product page on the Omron website.

Virdee Launches First End-to-End Contactless Check-in Solution for Hotels and Multifamily Properties

News Image

Using an API-first approach, Virdee has developed a best-in-class, end-to-end product for ID verification, payment collection, access control and remote support.

Virdee, a SaaS company serving the lodging and commercial real estate industries, launched Virdee Concierge today to provide a virtual reception experience for its clients’ tenants, guests, leasing prospects and vendors. Using an API-first approach, Virdee has developed a best-in-class, end-to-end product for ID verification, payment collection, access control and remote support.

Hotels, apartment buildings and other institutional-grade commercial real estate all require a litany of software and smart-hardware systems to operate. It is becoming increasingly difficult for property owners and managers to handle integrations among all these systems. Often, the software and smart hardware is left fragmented and ill-suited for seamless interactions – whether those end-users are property staff or customers. Virdee Concierge solves these problems with a simple, affordable solution that allows owners to maximize the value of their investments in their existing tech infrastructure.

  • End-to-end system provides contactless customer experience – Automates all traditional functions of a reception desk to optimize clients’ needs for on-site staffing while providing guests with a contactless and frictionless check-in experience. Throughout their arrival and in-building experience, end-users can engage directly through Virdee’s mobile app, in-lobby device, iOS/Android Wallet and virtual agents.
  • API-first approach brings together previously disparate systems – Integrates with leading providers of smart locks (RFID/BLE), mobile payment platforms and PMS systems that management companies know and trust. Virdee’s software and approach to integrations enhances and maximizes the utility of each system.
  • Affordable, easy to set up and manage – With limited upfront costs to customers, Virdee Concierge is available on a subscription basis. Since Virdee’s system can handle 100 percent of check-ins via technology, a typical property can save 5,000–10,000 hours in labor costs per year. Also, Virdee’s ID verification and payment collection platform works together to reduce credit card fraud and charge offs – historically a big problem for hotels. Implementing Virdee’s solution allows owners to increase property profitability while providing a safer, secure guest experience than traditional, more manual methods.

Branigan Mulcahy, Virdee founder, said: “Most of the hard work of building integrations has historically fallen to in-house IT teams that often are unable to invest in building and maintaining a robust solution. However, when Virdee builds a key integration, such as with Oracle’s Opera PMS, it can be used by any of Virdee’s customers. This approach means that through each integration Virdee generates a greater ROI than brands or management companies typically could individually.”

Nadav Cornberg, Virdee founder and chief technologist, said: “Virdee Concierge was designed to reduce owners’ costs while elevating the guest experience. Not all end-users have the same preferences on technology, so, in order to provide a complete solution, we offer end-users the choice of interacting via mobile, web, in-lobby device and/or virtual agent. We will continue to add differentiating functionality to make sure our customers have a cutting-edge technical experience and that our products stand above our competition.”

About Virdee

Based in Austin, Texas, Virdee is a software company serving the commercial real estate industry. Its primary product is Virdee Concierge, which provides a virtual reception for clients’ tenants, guests, leasing prospects and vendors. Virdee’s solution helps clients elevate the customer experience, reduce costs and generate ancillary revenue. Using an API-first approach, Virdee connects best-in-class platforms for ID verification, payment collection, access control and remote support. The company serves customers in lodging, multifamily, healthcare and other property types. Visit http://www.virdee.co to learn more.

CBORD and Vanderbilt University Launch the Commodore Card on iPhone and Apple Watch

This new technology shows the work we’re doing to protect our campus and community in one of the most challenging years our university has ever faced.

Vanderbilt students, faculty and staff can now add their Commodore Card to Apple Wallet and use their iPhone and Apple Watch to conveniently, safely and securely access campus buildings, purchase meals, and more.

With mobile IDs, students can complete any action that would have previously required a physical ID card — both on and off campus — with just their iPhone or Apple Watch. Students simply place their device near a reader to enter dorms, libraries and fitness centers, buy lunch, make purchases at campus stores, pay for laundry, print documents, and more.

The university decided to introduce this safer, more modern campus credential for the 2020-21 academic year, and successfully completed an accelerated implementation in three months. However, the plan to transition from a plastic ID card to contactless mobile credential began a year ago when CBORD, Vanderbilt’s campus card software provider, announced it was working with Apple to launch mobile student IDs on iPhone and Apple Watch.

“We’ve been looking for a way to provide improved access and simplicity for our students,” said Mark Brown, director of business services technology at Vanderbilt. “Our student government has advocated for a mobile solution for the past few years, and though we’ve been planning the transition for a year now, COVID-19 accelerated the process.”

COVID-19 has significantly affected Vanderbilt’s operations and student services, impacting nearly every area of campus life. Fewer students are living on campus, classes are a blend of in-person and virtual instruction, and entrance to buildings is limited. Campus dining has been modified to grab-and-go meals, contactless payments only, and outdoor seating in tents.

“This initiative has been of interest to both the student body and university administrators, as it supports both accessibility and convenience for our campus community,” Vice Chancellor for Administration Eric Kopstain said. “We are also excited about this new option because it provides an added health and safety benefit as students return to campus. The contactless payment option helps students avoid touching the readers or handing their ID cards to someone else.”

The move from physical cards to a mobile Commodore Card on smart devices allows for a transaction that is safe and convenient. Students simply hold an iPhone or Apple Watch within 6 inches of the compatible card reader to buy lunch, unlock a door, pay for laundry, check into class, or more. Vanderbilt can also issue school IDs remotely without the need to see students in-person or print and mail physical cards, creating a safer, more cost-effective, and more environmentally-friendly process.

The Commodore Card on iPhone and Apple Watch provides an extra level of security and privacy, so students do not need to worry about misplacing their physical card when they are enjoying campus life, and transaction history is never shared with Apple or stored on Apple servers. If a student misplaces their iPhone or Apple Watch, they can use the Find My app to immediately lock their device and help locate it. The Commodore Card on iPhone and Apple Watch is also protected by two factor authentication to ensure only the student can access their own account, even if someone else knows their password.

Brown continued, “It seems like we haven’t stopped to catch our breath since our kick-off call. Every reader has either been replaced or had its firmware upgraded. Off-campus vendors have received new terminals and training. We also upgraded CS Gold, CBORD’s campus card software, to the latest version.”

Vanderbilt is the fifth CBORD campus to launch mobile student IDs on iPhone and Apple Watch; the first four launched last fall.

The addition of mobile campus credentials adds to Vanderbilt’s comprehensive, cross-campus technology system powered by CBORD and its partners, which include meal plan management, online food ordering, foodservice management, ID card production, physical access, security, off-campus retail and more.

“Vanderbilt has built a connected campus of technology solutions tied together through a central card system,” stated Jim Hoefflin, president of CBORD. “It’s a great example of how you can bring all of your auxiliary services together to create an elevated, engaging student experience. The addition of mobile credentials is just the pinnacle of years of a successful partnership.”

“This new technology continues to solidify our reputation as a leading-edge, student-focused university,” said Brown. “But it also shows the work we’re doing to protect our campus and community in one of the most challenging years our university has faced.”
