SigmaSense SDC100 Touch Controller Enters Volume Production

SigmaDrive SDC100 touch controller operating through 13mm of glass

The SDC100 outperforms all other PCAP controllers where high fidelity, speed, and dependability matter

SigmaSense, the global leader in touch sensing performance, today announced that their SigmaDrive based SDC100 Touch Controller has entered volume production. SigmaSense developed the SDC100 to be the highest-performance touch controller in the interactive display space. The SDC100 enables touch response that is faster and more accurate than a smartphone, even on 75-inch outdoor digital signs with 13-mm thick tamper-resistant glass. It is proven to work in the harshest of environments: through thick bullet proof glass, in rain or snow, thick winter gloves and through a wide range of mechanical and electrical environmental interferences.

The groundbreaking SDC100 capabilities result from a unique method of current-mode sensing that is an exponential improvement over the traditional voltage-mode threshold approach. Current-mode sensing uses ultra-low voltage signals with many different frequencies, which it sends and listens to on rows and columns simultaneously. The output is faster, with lower latency, providing high-fidelity data with superior signal-to-noise characteristics.

The exceptional performance and feature set of the SDC100 overcomes long-standing PCAP controller design constraints and presents innovation opportunities for engineers by providing predictable performance even in challenging environments. And it enables new high resistance, less costly sensor materials that are flexible and optically superior compared to many low resistance sensor materials. This PCAP breakthrough means engineers can design using higher-resistant, less costly materials for use in harsher conditions, like outdoors in the rain or with contaminants and accept high speed inputs from multiple users simultaneously. Capacitive imaging of the entire screen also means new opportunities for AI and machine learning, enabling new experiences such as object recognition for interactive displays.

The SDC100 chip is in volume production and powering interactions for large outdoor displays built by LG-MRI, the outdoor digital signage industry leader. The 75-inch outdoor screens with 13-mm bulletproof glass are featured at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The SDC100-powered screens gather high-speed touch reports in the rain or snow and even through thick winter gloves.

“The new SDC100 digital Touch Controller is a dream come true,” says Bill Dunn, the Chairman of LG-MRI. “Solving all of the negative issues of the past decade: >30 db touch signal to noise ratios, 300Hz touch update rates, full performance in any outdoor environment (rain, snow, direct sun, shade, and freezing cold, blazing hot), no instability, no drift, and no false touches in high electromagnetic interference (EMI) environments, including proximity to high power arc welders. Truly a revolution in large-scale touch display.”

“It’s a true transformation of the display industry from a traditional consumption model to the true interactive model that has been promised forever,” says Rick Seger, CEO of SigmaSense. “Our technology will revolutionize multiple markets: from automotive, wearables, and bio-sensing to interactive kiosks, retail, and gaming. The SDC100 outperforms all other PCAP controllers where high fidelity, speed, and dependability matter.”

Recognition and accolades from industry leaders has begun: The technology has won Display Component of the Year by the Society for Information Design (SID) who hosts the 2021 Display Industry Awards (DIAs). SID recognizes innovative display products, components, and applications that hold the most promise for shaping the future of the global display industry, and SigmaSense is honored be a recognized this year as part of Display Week.

3 Legged Thing Announce Roxie – a dedicated L-bracket for Canon EOS R5 and R6

3 Legged Thing Roxie L-bracket for Canon EOS R5 and R6 in two colours

I’m really pleased to be able to finally bring this long-awaited product to market.

Following the release in mid 2020 of two new premium mirrorless cameras from Canon, the EOS R5 and R6, 3 Legged Thing was inundated with requests from customers to create a dedicated L-bracket that would fit the new camera models.

L-brackets are an essential tool for photographers working in many genres, as they enable the user to quickly switch their camera from landscape to portrait orientation on a tripod, whilst maintaining focal plane, a level horizon, and the weight above the centre canopy of the tripod – the most stable position.

Thanks to cooperation with Canon UK, 3 Legged Thing was able to design Roxie – an Arca-Swiss compatible L-bracket that is perfectly contoured to fit both camera models, and provide easy access to ports on the side of the camera, the battery door, strap lugs and lens release button.

“This is the first time we’ve co-operated with Canon on a project, and for me it’s been an absolute success,” commented Danny Lenihan, Founder and CEO of 3 Legged Thing. “The growth of L-Brackets as a modern photography tool, and the demand for our myriad of solutions has been an incredible platform for our growth. Roxie is a fantastic addition to our portfolio, and I’m really pleased to be able to finally bring this long-awaited product to market.”

Roxie is engineered to enable users to open the screen at the rear of the camera, and use it in upright or tilted positions, thanks to a carefully placed cut-out in the side of the Roxie bracket. This offers photographers the maximum versatility without having to remove the L-bracket from their camera.

The vertical aspect of Roxie features two ¼”-20 threads for attachment of accessories such as lights or monitors which is ideal for videographers. Roxie’s base also features an additional ¼”-20 thread which can be used for single point strap attachments.

Roxie is attached to the camera via a stainless steel Stagsden camera screw, and the base includes an additional locator pin that fits precisely into the bottom of the camera to stop the bracket from twisting or rotating. Both the vertical and horizontal aspects feature steel security pins to give users additional security when attaching to their tripod.

Precision milled from aerospace grade magnesium alloy, Roxie is being released in 3 Legged Thing’s signature L-bracket colours – Copper, and Metallic Slate Grey.

Roxie is available both online and in retail stores starting today, with a suggested retail price of £89.99 / US $99.99.

For more information, and images of the new product, visit https://www.3leggedthing.com/roxie.

AUO to Exhibit Cutting-Edge Display Technologies and Applications for Post-Pandemic Smart Living at SID Display Week 2021

AUO micro LED featured high brightness, high contrast, wide color gamut, fast response and high reliability, making it suitable for various automotive dashboard applications

The COVID-19 pandemic has sped up digital transformation for global industries. People are increasingly dependent on human-machine interfaces for remote and contactless communication, which has led to a strong desire for high-end displays. For many years, AUO has been committed to the research and design of innovative display technology. This year, through participating in the online exhibition of SID Display Week 2021, AUO will showcase diversified applications of high-end display technologies including micro LED, cutting-edge sensing technology, and A.R.T. (Advanced Reflectionless Technology), reiterating how displays can be applied in the post-epidemic era as the best helper for smoother human-machine communications to meet the once unimaginable needs.

With the automotive gradually moving towards intelligence and autonomy, how to convey precise information to the driver while improving its interior design through a better display system has become a major task. AUO takes the demands into consideration and leverages the advantages of micro LED, such as high brightness, high contrast, wide color gamut, and fast response speed, to comprehensively upgrade the overall driving experience. For example, the 12.1-inch 169 PPI micro LED display utilizes color conversion technology and its high brightness can display driving information clearly even under sunlight; the 9.4-inch 228 PPI flexible micro LED display satisfies the demand of fitting Central Information Display (CID) to interior shape with its dual-panel, dual-curvature stitching into an S-shaped CID. AUO also partners with PlayNitride to develop the 1.39-inch round-shaped display with the world’s highest(*) pixel density of 338PPI. With AUO’s unique free from technology, it can be used as the electronic knob for the CID, suitable for various automotive dashboard designs. Its ultra-wide viewing angle and high brightness features are also fit for wear in all sorts of application scenarios, from static to movement, and from sunny to snowy day. Micro LED is able to display crystal-clear information and optimize users’ visual experience substantially.

Digital devices with screens are everywhere in contemporary daily lives, especially after the pandemic. People tend to communicate online more frequently, and that leads to staring at the screen for a long time, which further increases the burden on the eyes. For this reason, AUO has exclusively developed the A.R.T. (Advanced Reflectionless Technology) with anti-glare and anti-reflection features, in the hope of protecting our next generation’s eyesight without compromising display quality. Focusing on the demands of content creator or picture/text editor, AUO has launched the world’s first(*) 32-inch 8K4K professional editing monitor panel, which reduces distractions due to the reflection or glare of ambient light, and shows sophisticated details when drawing, editing the video or viewing photos. The world’s first(*) 21.3-inch A.R.T. medical panel allows medical personnel to make more precise diagnosis and alleviate the damage to their eyesight after reading images for prolonged periods of time.

Furthermore, to achieve a better human-computer interaction, the sensing technology acting like a messenger is also a key factor in addition to display technology. Leveraging the profound TFT display technologies developed over the years, AUO presents cutting-edge sensing technology to meet the various demands in the smart verticals. For example, focusing on smart retail trends, AUO applies special CIAA (Circuits in Active Area) technology to transform the screen into an Near Field Communication (NFC) signal sensor, allowing mutual communication between the consumer and the store system through a single interface; in order to improve smart medical applications due to the pandemic, flexible, a-Si (amorphous Silicon) manufacturing process and Low-Temperature Polysilicon (LTPS) process were applied to develop X-ray sensors respectively to realize the mission of precision medicine.

The displays will soon be everywhere in the future. AUO has combined advanced OLED technology to create a 5.6-inch rollable dual-sided OLED display with double-sided displays when unrolled, and can be viewed by different users from each side. It can also be easily stored or carried around when rolled up. AUO replaces the reflection reduction circular polarizer with proprietary color filter (CF), which greatly reduced the thickness of the display module by 50% and maintain the brightness of display. It has passed the 100,000 times rolling test at a radius of 9mm curvature, proving the technology’s durability and reliability. In the future, it allows multiple users to watch different contents simultaneously, inspiring various next-generation display applications.

While pursuing innovation in display technology, AUO commits to energy conservation and environmental sustainability, and continues to develop inkjet printing OLED technology, which has a higher material utilization rate than traditional evaporation techniques. AUO’s 32-inch UHD 4K inkjet printing OLED panel is driven by oxide backplane and offers industry-leading ultra-high frame rate of 144Hz with 4K 140 PPI resolution. The inkjet printing OLED technology will meet the increasing demand for high image quality and high frame rate in both medical and gaming applications. At the same time, AUO shows world’s first(*) 10.1-inch panel that integrates inorganic wire-grid polarizers into LCD cell, thus increasing the transmittance by 1.5 times while reducing power consumption by 25%. The thickness of in cell inorganic wire-grid polarizer is less than 1um, about 1/600 of the thickness of the traditional polarizers, which greatly reduces the thickness by 120–160um, and passes the severe environment test of higher than 105°C/1000 hours. This feature is suitable for applications requiring long battery life, lightweight and slim stylish design.

As displays are indispensable in our everyday life, AUO has developed the strategy of “Go Vertical” and “Go Premium,” and the pace of innovation never falters. Recently, AUO unveiled the AUO-NTU Joint Research Center at National Taiwan University, aiming to stimulate comprehensive research on display and sensing technology while working with excellent talents from interdisciplinary backgrounds through further academia-industry collaboration. In addition to high-end technology exhibition, a series of innovative technology papers and discussions will also be held during Display Week 2021, fully shown AUO’s determination to the R&D of cutting-edge display technology and its application in the future.

Code Ocean Announces $21 Million in Funding to Accelerate in Biotech

Logo for Code Ocean

Code Ocean has raised $21 million to accclerate development of its leading computational research environment

“Code Ocean is riding the next wave of innovative companies who are reinventing scientific tools and platforms,” said Scott Tobin, General Partner, Battery Ventures

Code Ocean, the leading computational research environment for sharing scientific discoveries, today announced that it has raised a total of $21 million in funding, including a $15M Series A round of funding led by Battery Ventures, with investment from Digitalis Ventures, EBSCO, Vaal Partners and other institutional and individual investors. With this funding, Code Ocean will accelerate development of its leading environment, which empowers researchers to continuously organize, execute, and share research end-to-end, thereby increasing efficiency and reproducibility.

“We’re excited to invest and partner in such a large market opportunity with Code Ocean,” said Scott Tobin, General Partner, Battery Ventures, who is also a board director of the company. “Code Ocean is riding the next wave of innovative companies who are reinventing scientific tools and platforms, and we believe their unique technology has immense potential.”

Until now, researchers have struggled to close their technology gaps in order to keep pace with a growing amount of data. They often find themselves wasting precious time with rote DevOps tasks and operating in silos, unable to effectively collaborate on their research with others in a secure fashion. Unfortunately, this results in slow discovery progress and a low reproducibility rate — in fact, more than 70% of computational research is non-reproducible.

“With the current growth in the Biotech sector, the amount of big, multimodal data is increasing rapidly,” said Simon Adar, Co-founder and CEO, Code Ocean. “Consequently, we see demand emerging for our new category of modern computational research platforms, which increase reproducibility and are significantly easier to use than traditional ad hoc, standalone science and IT operational data and analysis platforms.”

One of the key differentiators of Code Ocean’s approach is its Compute CapsuleTM, which creates a software package comprising the essential triplet of any computational research work today: code, data and a Docker-ized container that enables researchers to reproduce, reuse and collaborate. Capsules, datasets and results become assets, managed in a secure searchable repository. Code Ocean’s cloud-based environment manages access control and automates the use of any computing resource and storage. The Code Ocean platform is completely agnostic and incorporates RStudio, Jupyter, Terminal, MATLAB, Shiny, Git, and more.

“What I love about Code Ocean is how the platform facilitates more seamless collaboration and awareness of what our different groups are doing, and how it is better wired together throughout the company,” said Eric Schadt, Ph.D., Founder and CEO, Sema4, a patient-centered health intelligence company. “For us, it solves one of our biggest obstacles, which is how innovation propagates between smart groups that operate in silos. It was amazing to see how adoption caught fire on the inside completely organically.”

In aggregate, Code Ocean’s open cloud has processed hundreds of thousands of complex computations for scientists from more than 1,000 universities. Code Ocean also has partnerships with leading research publishers such as Nature, AACR, IEEE, Elsevier, and others. Although Code Ocean’s open-access cloud can be used for any type of research, its new Enterprise offering has achieved exceptional early adoption in the biotech, pharmaceutical and life sciences industries, in which it serves premiere corporate customers such as Sema4, Champions Oncology, CytoReason, Dragonfly Therapeutics, among others.

“Code Ocean enabled us to move from individual mode to true teamwork and allowed us to develop standards for the group and share code efficiently,” said Yair Benita, Ph.D., Head of Science Operations, CytoReason. “Once we were all on board sharing code and workflows, the group started moving quickly, the quality of our work was higher, we improved as we moved while being able to reproduce every result and document our work easily.”

Code Ocean is currently hiring for all positions in engineering, marketing and sales. For more information, please visit https://codeocean.com/.

The founders of the Tail Company said “Every time we release a new improved tail design, we discover more and more tailers around the world. For dressing up, or for just living your life, our tails will make your outift.”

The Tail Company has been creating lifelike, natural moving tails since 2005. Indeed, all of their research goes in to creating the best moving tails in the world. Worn everywhere – to give life to your Cosplay or fursona, and for daily life. Many thousands are worn every day around the world, at conventions and clubs, on TV and Film, and as a fashion accessory!

Their new offering is called miTail – and launched on Kickstarter 2 weeks ago. Funded in under 2 hours, it has already raised over $50,000, with pledges accelerating. With 2 weeks left to go, their goal of tailing-the-world seems in sight.

miTail features a whole host of upgrades to their wildly popular DIGITAiL. USB-C fast charging, Powerbank support (so you can keep going for up to 10 hours), Move mode, and many more. Just like all their tails, every one comes with a handmade customizable removable cover, so you can change it up, any time.

miTail is controlled by an app, for Android and iOS. This allows for new skills to be “beamed” to your tail when they get release. Recently, tails learned Gesture support and Move Mode. And Apple Watch support is coming soon. Best of all, miTail will sync with EarGear, the Tail Company’s animatronic ears system!
