Affordable and accurate bias lighting for the home

LX1 Bias Lighting starts at only $15. The simulated D65 / 6500K ColorGrade chip provides a calibrated white reference that enhances any display’s image and reduces eye strain.

We know how frustrating it can be to find affordable, high-quality bias lighting but you don’t have to sacrifice quality for affordability. The LX1 is a high-quality bias light that vastly outperforms the competition and costs less.

Scenic Labs, recognized as an industry leader for its MediaLight Bias Lighting System and video optimization products, introduces the LX1. The new product delivers an unprecedented viewing environment in the home.

LX1 Bias Lighting starts at only $15 and is certified for color accuracy by the Imaging Science Foundation. The simulated D65 / 6500K ColorGrade chip provides a calibrated white reference that enhances any display’s image and reduces eye strain, but also adheres to industry standards. This is not the case with inferior low-cost alternatives on the market, which can compromise image quality by altering perceived color.

“We know how frustrating it can be to find affordable, high-quality bias lighting. That’s why we engineered LX1 Bias Lighting – an extremely accurate bias light at an affordable price point,” said Jason Rosenfeld, Scenic Labs’ president. “The best part is that you don’t have to sacrifice quality for affordability. By making some modest changes in specification from our flagship MediaLight brand, we’ve been able to engineer a high-quality bias light that vastly outperforms the competition and costs less.”

LX1 bias lighting is available in six convenient and easy-to-install sizes with three-sided coverage for displays up to 129 inches, and four-sided coverage for displays up to 95 inches. In addition, LX1 lighting can be cut to your TV’s exact measurement if desired. Every LX1 component is covered by a comprehensive two-year warranty.

MSRP: $14.95—$39.95

Scenic Labs suggests using a dimmer with the LX1. Multiple dimmer options are available from the Scenic Labs dealer network; the LX1 is also compatible with a wide array of aftermarket dimmers and controllers.

Features:

  • 6500K (ISF-certified for accuracy)
  • Color rendering index (CRI) 95
  • USB powered (USB 2.0 for 1-4m and USB 3.0 for 5-6 meters)
  • Compatible with many dimmers (sold separately)
  • Two-year warranty

Created in 2021, LX1 Bias Lighting is a division of Scenic Labs. The company offers some of the world’s leading video-optimization products, including The MediaLight Bias Lighting System and the Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark and UHD Benchmark setup discs.

As Edge Applications Multiply, OpenInfra Community Delivers StarlingX 5.0, Offering Cloud Infrastructure Stack for 5G, IoT

StarlingX

With market research indicating that about 70% of compute will be moving towards the edge over the next five years or so, we foresee continued strong adoption and investment in StarlingX community activity.

StarlingX—the open source edge computing and IoT cloud platform optimized for low-latency and high-performance applications—is available in its 5.0 release today. StarlingX combines Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes and more to create a full-featured cloud software stack that provides everything carriers and enterprises need to deploy an edge cloud on a few servers or hundreds of them.

New features in StarlingX 5.0 include:

  • edgeworker nodes, which enable customized operating systems near and at the edge
  • security enhancements
  • improvements to orchestration and automation
  • upgrades to and containerization of integrated open source components

***Download StarlingX 5.0 at https://opendev.org/starlingx***

StarlingX is in production, driving top 5G deployments

T-Systems and Verizon rely on StarlingX for their edge and production vRAN use cases, and a growing set of organizations are also evaluating the project for production deployment.

“It’s been exciting to see the tremendous increase in StarlingX community activity, not only in terms of commercial adoptions and evaluations but also with respect to investments in the project by many different organizations and individual contributors,” said Paul Miller, chief technology officer, Wind River.

“We’re also seeing now, as a result of early market adoption of this open source stack, the use of StarlingX in edge computing and industrial IoT solutions,” Miller continued. “With market research indicating that about 70% of compute will be moving towards the edge over the next five years or so, we foresee continued strong adoption and investment in StarlingX community activity. As an original contributor to the code base and a strong supporter of the project, we are encouraged to see business being driven by StarlingX. The kind of ecosystem development we’re seeing around StarlingX is exactly what you want to see in a thriving open source community.”

Key Features of StarlingX 5.0

To further support the low-latency and distributed cloud requirements of edge computing and industrial IoT use cases, the community prioritized these features in StarlingX 5.0:

  • Support for ‘edgeworker’ nodes, a new personality distinguished from ‘worker’ nodes. Edgeworker nodes are usually deployed close to an edge device, such as an I/O device, a camera, a servo motor or a sensor, to manage host-based enrollment. The ‘edgeworker’ personality is particularly suitable when users want a lightweight approach, deploying only a few agents on the nodes. With edgeworker nodes, users can enroll new operating systems and new server classes, which expands the possibility for new StarlingX use cases.
  • Support for Nvidia GPUs, enabling operators to do additional offload for those particular workloads that require GPU interacting, such as machine learning or other image-based processing.
  • Support for FPGA image update orchestration. FPGA and acceleration are important features of edge systems. The new FPGA image update orchestration feature in StarlingX 5.0 improves operations, supporting automation across the distributed cluster. This gives users the option to deploy FPGA with orchestrations that are automated from end to end.
  • A PTP notification feature to further extend StarlingX’s support of Precision Time Protocol. Operators can now receive notifications about the PTP state and take action in case the system time is no longer in sync with the PTP clock source, which is critical for time-sensitive applications.
  • Vault integration for secret management, a security focused feature. Users want the ability to store and access secrets securely. These secrets can include credentials, encryption keys, API tokens and other data that should not be stored in plain text on a system. Vault, an open source project, provides the ability to encrypt and store secrets with access control via a range of authorization and access policy configurations. Vault’s features include dynamic secret generation, data encryption, leasing and renewal, revocation and audit/logging. The integration of Vault improves StarlingX’s security posture and encryption capabilities while maintaining manageability.

Other additions to the new version include:

  • Improvements to certification management to enhance automation
  • Containerized Ceph storage by using Rook
  • Support for Net-SNMP v3 for the fault management service
  • CephFS for cluster storage
  • Container Image Signature Validation

Learn more about these and other features of StarlingX 5.0 in the community’s release notes.

OpenInfra Community Drives StarlingX Progress

The StarlingX project launched in 2018. Since then, there have been more than 10,000 commits from over 260 authors. Today’s 5.0 release added 1100 commits from 105 developers to those total numbers. The StarlingX community is actively collaborating with several other groups such as the OpenInfra Edge Computing Group, ONAP, Akraino and more.

After initial code for the project was contributed by Wind River and Intel to the Open Infrastructure Foundation, the active community of support for StarlingX has expanded to include 99Cloud, FiberHome, and China UnionPay, among others. China UnionPay, China Unicom, T-Systems and Verizon have become early adopters of the software.

Community Accolades for StarlingX 5.0

“The StarlingX community is continuously making significant progress,” said Shuquan Huang, technical director, 99Cloud Inc. “We’re excited to see StarlingX 5.0 is available with a lot of enhancements and new features. StarlingX will be the key to meet the requirement of edge computing, and it’s time to use the latest StarlingX platform to build your edge cloud.”

“The StarlingX 5.0 release is a new stage for edge computing,” said Wang Hao, senior software engineer, FiberHome Enterprise. “There are some great features that have been introduced to the platform to enhance edge computing security and bring more flexibility to different types of nodes that will extend StarlingX’s application to more edge scenarios. Fiberhome will continue to focus on edge computing techniques and work with the StarlingX community to bring more values to our users.”

What Black Technology Employees Need CEOs to Know and Change

Darrell Booker, Tech Equity Evangelist

As Black employees, we’re not put into the positions to be able to be heard and to be able to give our opinions like white counterparts do. It’s been that way for me since I was 17 – there was no black person in tech to look up to and I hid my geekness, and my gifts, because of it.

Darrell Booker, Technology Strategist and Program Manager for the Nonprofit Tech Acceleration for Black and African-American Communities (NTA) at Microsoft Philanthropies, doesn’t have any role models in the tech community that look like him. Why?

As someone who’s dedicated his professional career to working in tech, Booker observed, “We’re not put into the positions to be able to be heard and to be able to give our opinions like white counterparts do. It’s been that way for me since I was 17 – there was no black person in tech to look up to and I hid my geekness, and my gifts, because of it.”

Black and brown employees are on their own treadmill to prove themselves in the workplace, and tech is no exception. By the time someone gets to the point where they could become a role model, they’re both exhausted and they need to conform to the system of the entity that’s elevated them if they want to continue to get the visibility required.

“Those who get elevated to possibly be a role model have done so because they conformed into a model of a person to get things done. They’re no longer ‘real ones’ – they morphed into another person. Within the community we can spot the fake ones. We need more platforms to [elevate] the real ones and to really let the world know as a black community what our struggles are and what we need as a community.”

For Booker, it’s time to let the other possible Darrells out there know: you’re not alone. He is here to be a vessel for understanding and advancing those that look like him within the Tech Community.

As the Program Manager for the Nonprofit Tech Acceleration for Black and African-American Communities (NTA) at Microsoft Philanthropies, Booker creates and leads these initiatives from a place of authenticity and a desire to build up his community.

“When you feel like you walk into a room and the odds are stacked against you the second you walk in you can’t show up as the best person you need to be. I started coding at 17 in a full time job, with benefits and the whole nine. I was young, black, and felt like I had to come in as the perfect figure they were looking for because I know there are some things I can’t change. At the end of the day all of the conforming didn’t make a difference, so I decided to show up for myself. I didn’t want to wear the white man uniform of the blue shirt and khaki pants anymore, and I decided if everyone else can show up and be them, I can show up and be me,” said Booker.

Booker is scheduled to appear Friday, June 4 at an event for the 2021 and 8th Annual ED Games Expo, a showcase of game-changing innovations in education technology supported by programs across government. Technical assistance for this event was provided by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the event is hosted by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ Serious Games Initiative, with leadership from Johnson C. Smith University. The event will be live-streamed from 12:00pm–4:00pm ET.

Martello Launches Global Partner Program Enabling Microsoft 365 Digital Experience Monitoring Services for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises

News Image

The small and medium enterprises who rely on these trusted advisors can now achieve the benefits enjoyed by large enterprises using Martello DEM to reduce downtime, improve employee productivity and maximize their return on the Microsoft 365 investment.

Martello Technologies Group Inc., (“Martello” or the “Company”) (TSXV: MTLO), a leading developer of enterprise digital experience monitoring (“DEM”) solutions announces the launch of its channel partner program and welcomes partner LDI to the program. Martello’s partner program allows managed service providers (MSPs) and value-added resellers (VARs) to bring the benefits of Martello’s Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams digital experience monitoring platform to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). LDI, a New York-based leader in the supply, sale and service of digital office technology with more than 7,000 small and medium sized enterprise customers, has joined the program.

Martello’s partner program, which includes training, automated service-level agreement (SLA) management and co-marketing is designed to help partners provide value added services with complete visibility of Microsoft 365 and cloud/hybrid service delivery. Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams are now widely used by businesses, but limited visibility into cloud service performance and the complexity of hybrid service delivery create challenges managing solution performance and user experience. This partner program creates a significant opportunity for partners in the global Microsoft ecosystem to provide more value to their customers, centered on delivering user experience monitoring and optimization to enhance their SLA offers.

Microsoft partners are crucial providers of Microsoft 365 to SMEs that account for more than 60% of the global workforce. There are more than one million enterprises using Microsoft 365 globally, and Gartner forecasts that by 2024, 50% of them will use a third-party software tool to monitor the Microsoft 365 experience, up from less than 10% in 2020. Partners at any stage of cloud maturity, supported by a dedicated Martello partner manager, can easily improve their Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams customer offering and develop new revenue streams with Martello digital experience monitoring and optimization. The partner program is expected to increase the number of Microsoft users on Martello’s DEM platform through FY22.

LDI provides digital office technology to 7,000 clients in over 30 states. Their clients operate in the legal, accounting, higher education, not for profit and healthcare sectors and typically have 150-300 employees. Throughout their 20 years in business, LDI has evolved to meet the needs of their clients, and today they have developed a strong ecosystem of vendors that allow them to bring unique value to cloud communications and managed IT services: “Partnering with Martello Technologies brings us unique new tools to differentiate from competitors and drive additional services revenue as part of our collaboration and communication offering to clients”, said Robert Handel, Senior Director of LDI Cloud Services. “Martello’s DEM solutions strengthen the world-class service we bring to our clients, by enabling our team and our clients to proactively view, monitor and resolve issues related to Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams performance and user experience.”

“We’ve built a partner program that will give any Microsoft partner a simple and cost-effective path to revenue from value-added digital experience monitoring and optimization services”, said Mike Danforth, VP global sales and partnerships at Martello. “The small and medium enterprises who rely on these trusted advisors can now achieve the benefits enjoyed by large enterprises using Martello DEM to reduce downtime, improve employee productivity and maximize their return on the Microsoft 365 investment”.

Martello DEM for Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams

Martello’s DEM solutions monitor the performance and user experience for Microsoft 365, with a focus on the popular Microsoft Teams video conferencing application, which is used by more than 500,000 businesses globally. Synthetic transaction monitoring of Microsoft 365 and Teams provides pre-event alerting of performance issues, together with correlation of performance and status data from integrated IT service monitoring tools and cloud platforms including AWS and Google Cloud. Together, these capabilities provide unique insight into the entire IT infrastructure supporting Microsoft 365 performance from end-to-end. Martello will strengthen this offering in 2021 for the partners in its program with real user monitoring, which monitors actual user activity, regardless of where the user is located, and active network path monitoring, which provides a clearer picture of the network path taken by every Microsoft action.

Partners interested in joining the partner program can reach Martello’s partner team at partners@martellotech.com.

Powered by AUO AmLED technology, Acer’s all-new Predator Helios 500 features a large-sized 17.3-inch 4K display panel that boasts VESA DisplayHDR™ 1000 certification with peak brightness exceeding 1000 nits, revealing an exceptionally high million-to-one dynamic contrast ratio. Furthermore, its 120Hz high refresh rate and wide color gamut also contribute to finer details against both dark and bright image background to exhibit vibrant colors and more color depth even when gamers are situated in the dark interior space or bright outdoor environment, providing lifelike gaming visuals and immersive experience to meet their most stringent demand for image quality and smooth operations. The newly-launched Predator Helios 500 also comes with a FHD variant with AUO’s industry-leading 360Hz high refresh rate(*), rocking a 3 ms response time for the smoothest image possible.

“On the way to realizing our ‘AUO Next’ value transformation, we strive to bring value-added innovations for ecosystem partners through cutting-edge display technologies and applications. We are honored to cooperate with Acer to amaze consumers with next-generation display technology AmLED,” Frank Ko, AUO President and Chief Operating Officer indicated. “Meanwhile, with keen product execution capabilities, we put our care for the earth into practice. As a technology champion and market pioneer, AUO and Acer make it possible to create technology innovations without compromising sustainability, and thus grant a better future for the next generation on a global scale.”

“Acer and AUO share the same vision for sustainability and technology innovations. As we face intensifying environmental challenges, AUO has been an important partner in promoting positive changes,” Tiffany Huang, Co-Chief Operating Officer, Acer Inc. noted. “Working with AUO, we not only give top-notch gamers premium experiences through advanced display technologies, but also, on Acer’s Earthion sustainability platform, AUO continues to make breakthroughs, helping us reduce environmental impacts through green production and manufacturing.”

Joint Efforts to Develop Eco-friendly Products to Nurture a Sustainable Value Chain

In Acer’s sustainability-focused notebook, the Aspire Vero, AUO extends material usage to include PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic), recycled glass substrate, and recycled steel material for the panel’s back bezel. This endeavor reinvigorates the reclaimed materials with versatile material applications and transforms into differentiated brand value, providing eco-minded consumers more options. Coming after the worldwide first UL 3600 circularity certified panel adopted by Acer, this is how AUO continues to realize its zero-waste vision and pursue sustainable product innovations to realize the spirit of green value chain.

Aspiring Drone Pilots Can Now Train Remotely at Embry-Riddle

“This opens up all sorts of training and opportunities for our students.”

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Worldwide Campus recently received a first-of-its-kind waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that will allow students to remotely pilot unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or drones, through online video platforms like Zoom.

“This is a big deal,” said Dr. David Thirtyacre, College of Aeronautics assistant professor and Department of Flight chair. “We’ve worked closely with the FAA on this project for two years and now have the ability to let students fly complex drones, that are not at their location, from anywhere in the United States. This opens up all sorts of training and opportunities for our students.”

Allowing what is known as remote-split operations (RSO), the waiver gives Embry-Riddle students a jump on a valuable technology and is the first of its type to be granted to a civilian organization, Thirtyacre said.

Dr. Joseph Cerreta, associate professor of Aeronautical Science who submitted the waiver request to the FAA, said RSO is especially important for Worldwide Campus students who may not be able fly drones where they live. It also allows students to fly sophisticated aircraft with complex equipment, such as multispectral sensors and thermal cameras, to which they might not otherwise have access. Currently, the Worldwide Campus is the only of Embry-Riddle’s three campuses that has been granted this permission.

“RSO introduces complex operational environments for our students to experience the importance of crew resource management, effective communication, aeronautical decision-making and airmanship principles,” said Cerreta. “These are all fundamental components of knowledge, skills and abilities for an unmanned systems operator, which sets Embry-Riddle students apart.”

Ian Kerr, who is in Worldwide’s master’s program in Aeronautics, recently flew a $5,000 Embry-Riddle drone located in Idaho to perform an aerial survey of a cemetery — using artificial intelligence — from his home in Seattle. Another crew member participating in the flight, Casey McGuire, was located at his home in Las Vegas.

“Being able to conduct these missions with experienced pilots such as Dr. Cerreta will allow student pilots like me to become industry leaders,” said Kerr. “Embry-Riddle is paving the way.”

McGuire, who is earning a Bachelor of Science in Unmanned Systems Applications and a Master of Science in Unmanned Systems, called the Idaho flight “one of the most rewarding experiences I have had at Embry-Riddle.”

“I think the opportunity to perform RSO is invaluable for me moving forward,” McGuire said. “The mission involves all of the objectives that many leading industry players are trying to achieve. This was incredible exposure to beyond visual line of sight operations that someday will be more widely accepted and utilized.”
