What is ISO/IEC 17025?

ISO/IEC 17025 was first issued in 1999 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is the single most important standard for calibration and testing laboratories around the world. Laboratories that are accredited to this international standard have demonstrated that they are technically competent and able to produce precise and accurate test and/or calibration data. This accreditation is a voluntary, third party-reviewed process. As part of accreditation, a laboratory’s quality management system (QMS) is thoroughly evaluated and all accredited tests are observed by an auditor on a regular basis to ensure continued technical competence and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. A copy of NSL’s QMS is available by requesting it at http://www.nslanalytical.com/quality-system-manual

2019 Holiday Hacking – 5 Ways to Avoid Cyber Attacks While Traveling

Travel Cyber Security Tips, Matrix Integration

“When you travel, there’s always the possibility of leaving your phone somewhere or tapping into an unknown Wi-Fi connection, making your data vulnerable to getting lost or stolen,” said Chris Martin, security expert and solutions architect at Matrix Integration.

With more than 100 million people* on planes, trains and automobiles from Thanksgiving through New Year’s, there are millions of phones to be lost, travelers to hack and gigabytes to be erased. That’s why Matrix Integration, a strategic IT infrastructure partner for more than 1,000 businesses in Indiana and beyond, is offering five critical tips for keeping travelers’ devices and data safe during the holidays.

“When you travel, there’s always the possibility of leaving your phone somewhere or tapping into an unknown Wi-Fi connection, making your data vulnerable to getting lost or stolen,” said Chris Martin, security expert and solutions architect at Matrix Integration. “Unfortunately, there are always people who will take advantage of situations like crowds during the holidays.”

Matrix Integration works with all types of organizations to create security plans to prevent cyberattacks and keep data safe. Many solutions are implemented enterprise-wide, but there are precautions individuals can take to protect themselves.

Matrix Integration’s Top Five Cybersecurity Tips for Holiday Travel

  • Back up everything. Before a trip, take the time to back up critical data. It only takes a few minutes, but can save hours or days if a device is lost or damaged.
  • Patch and protect. Also before leaving: update devices with the most recent operating systems and software. Companies continuously update software with security patches, so the more up-to-date devices are, the less chance they have of getting hacked.
  • Beware of Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a fast and easy way to connect devices, but it can also provide a direct link for smart cybercriminals to access personal information. If possible, disable Bluetooth in busy crowded spaces.
  • No paper passwords. It’s tempting to keep passwords written down, but this makes them easy to steal. Instead, look for well-known password management software. These applications encrypt data, allowing for safe storage of passwords as well as critical-but-sensitive information like passport numbers and financial accounts.
  • Be mindful of surroundings. Crowded travel areas are often a target for traditional criminals as well as digital criminals. Don’t peruse private personal data like bank accounts, or type in passwords that others can see.

If devices are updated and data is backed up, people are much less likely to lose personal, private information while traveling. When it comes to businesses protecting their information, Matrix Integration collaborates with clients to identify their most important assets, come up with a plan to protect and detect those assets, and provide tools to discover and respond to attacks before they can cause damage. Types of solutions include robust identity management systems so passwords are harder to steal, data encryption software, and staff training.

Propylon® Announces Successful Implementation of Its LWB 360 Legislative Software Solution for Michigan Legislature

Propylon Worked in Partnership with Michigan Legislature Team to Create, Develop, and Implement a New Bill Drafting and Chamber Automation System

Propylon Worked in Partnership with Michigan Legislature Team to Create, Develop, and Implement a New Bill Drafting and Chamber Automation System

Our working collaboration with Propylon has been critical to the success of this project, ensuring that the knowledge within the Legislature was fully utilized when building the new software system.

Propylon® today announced the successful deployment of its legislative software solution for the Michigan legislature, which replaced an outdated and aging bill drafting and chamber automation system. The LWB 360 application went live in August, offering immediate benefits to Michigan’s legislative processes.

Working in collaboration with the Michigan Legislature House, Senate, and Legislative Service Bureau (LSB) team, Propylon designed and developed a custom-built legislative software solution with the goal of streamlining processes to minimize system risks and increase system efficiency.

“Our collaboration with the Michigan legislature team has been a flourishing partnership resulting in the successful delivery of a truly integrated bill drafting and chamber automation system,” said John Harrington, CEO of Propylon. “The foresight and commitment to invest in building a strong platform capable of managing the legislative process for the next 20 years and beyond is not only a credit to the Michigan legislature management team, but a model to emulate.”

Propylon’s LWB 360 application, which was successfully deployed in August following an eight-month phased implementation process, provides a single, centralized source of data between Michigan’s House, Senate, and LSB. This allows information to flow with ease between departments, increases accuracy, and ensures that existing procedures, rules, and confidentiality remain in place.

Utilizing Propylon’s modern, user-friendly tools, legislative staff can benefit from increased efficiency through the automation of tasks that were previously manual, the elimination of data re-entry between departments, and the simplification of workflow processes.

“Our working collaboration with Propylon has been critical to the success of this project, ensuring that the knowledge within the legislature was fully utilized when building the new software system,” said Doug Simon, Business Director and CFO at Michigan House of Representatives. “Co-innovating with a vendor that understands the intricacies of how a legislature works as well as the importance of supporting the state legislative IT staff so that they can independently manage the system was one of the key success factors in this project.”

Following rigorous software testing and staff training in new processes, the successful implementation of Propylon’s legislative solution allows for greater efficiency, enhanced functionality, and more streamlined procedures while paving the way for future enhancements to the legislative process on a consolidated technological foundation.

Cities can unlock a combined $60 Billion by Hyperconnecting their Urban Ecosystems, according to new ESI ThoughtLab Study

News Image

Building a Hyperconnected City

The journey to hyperconnectivity will provide tremendous dividends to all city stakeholders—from citizens rich and poor, to residents young and old, to workers skilled and unskilled, and to businesses large and small.”

Today, ESI ThoughtLab announced the key findings from its Building a Hyperconnected City program, a year-long global study of 100 cities using technology to improve, connect, and secure all areas of their ecosystem. The study, supported by a coalition of industry leaders, shows how cities can go beyond current smart solutions to become “hyperconnected” hubs generating large economic, social, and environmental benefits by linking key elements of their urban landscape—from transportation to public health and security, from government to business and residents. ESI ThoughtLab’s economists estimate that, worldwide, cities could collectively enjoy a return on investment of as much as $60 billion if they were to become fully hyperconnected.

The findings were officially announced at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain during a keynote speech by Lou Celi, CEO of ESI ThoughtLab. According to estimates by the reporting cities, the average return on investment on smart city initiatives ranges from 3 percent to 4 percent. As cities become more interlinked, their ROI grows. Returns in dollar terms can range from $19.6 million per city for hyperconnected beginners to $83 million per city for hyperconnected leaders. This is on top of sizable social, quality of life, and environmental benefits—such as reductions in crime, congestion, and pollution, as well as improvements in public health and living conditions.

Based on the research findings, ESI ThoughtLab recommends that cities striving to become hyperconnected urban centers follow a roadmap that includes these elements already being applied by leaders in our study:

  • Crafting an evidence-based business case and continuously monitor performance—analyzing ROI systematically with the right metrics.
  • Calculating the full benefits including social, business, economic, and environmental benefits.
  • Capitalizing on advanced technologies—particularly various forms of AI—while also bearing in mind the importance of cybersecurity.
  • Generating more value from data by gathering, integrating, and monetizing it in a responsible way, as well as sharing it with stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Organizing resources within a largely centralized department and drawing on both internal and external staff to operate hyperconnected city programs.
  • Using the ecosystem effectively, partnering with business and academic communities, but keeping crucial development and implementation tasks in-house.
  • Ensuring all citizens are engaged and connected by seeking input from stakeholders and reaching out to disadvantaged populations.

A hyperconnected approach generates considerable returns in all areas of a city’s ecosystem. For example, the research revealed that using technology to interlink different areas of public transit programs increases passenger satisfaction 38%, on-time arrival 33%, and transit ridership 29%. Digital public transit payment systems, used by 72% of cities surveyed, are particularly effective, with hyperconnected leaders recognizing a 6.5% ROI. Leaders also report a 4.9% return on real-time public transit apps, 4.8% on open loop payment systems, and 4.6% on mobility-as-a-service apps.

“The real value comes not just from using technology to link assets within urban areas, such as mobility, safety, energy, and sustainability, but also from connecting city stakeholders, including governments, citizens, businesses, and academia. When these are all aligned, cities can reap the greatest economic, business, and social rewards,” said Celi.

To become hyperconnected, cities may also need to overcome a series of roadblocks. Uncertainty among citizens and other stakeholders who feel their health, privacy, or other interests will be compromised by new technologies is one of the thorniest. The study found that cities like Moscow, Barcelona, and Stockholm alleviate this through effective communication and outreach to build citizen trust and engagement. Funding for smart initiatives is yet another hurdle, but there are many possible solutions, both public and private, that leaders around the world have adopted. Cities must also overcome policy and regulatory barriers—such as those around procurement—to get where they are going. And they must pay close attention to cybersecurity, since the costs of not doing so can mount into the millions.

“Getting past these roadblocks may not be easy,” said Celi. “But the journey to hyperconnectivity will provide tremendous dividends to all city stakeholders—from citizens rich and poor, to residents young and old, to workers skilled and unskilled, and to businesses large and small.”

The world’s most convenient platform for scalable (CDN) and reliable file hosting

FREE CDN that syncs with cloud storage

CDN THAT SYNCS WITH YOUR CLOUD STORAGE

“We want to get content online quickly with the simplicity and ease of use of cloud storage without sacrificing the reliable scalability and performance of a CDN.”

Fast Technologies, Inc. is excited to announce the launch of Fast.io: The world’s most convenient platform for scalable and reliable file hosting. It is a solution for designers, developers, and marketers looking to automate everything needed to host and track files and static websites at an enterprise scale.

Fast.io was founded by Derek Labian and Tom Langridge, who also co-founded MediaFire, a top 100 website visited globally, and a leader in consumer cloud storage and file sharing.

“The process of deploying static content today is complicated and time-consuming because solutions like S3 require manual uploading, a separate CDN configuration, a manual review of raw data logs, and tedious cache flushing each time an update is made,” says Tom Langridge, co-founder of Fast.Io and MediaFire. “We want to get content online quickly with the simplicity and ease of use of cloud storage without sacrificing the reliable scalability and performance of a CDN.”

The platform simplifies and automates the cumbersome steps required to add, manage, update, deploy, and analyze static assets directly on content delivery networks (CDNs) like Akamai, Fastly, and Cloudflare. It tightly integrates with your current workflows and preferred cloud storage service (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, MediaFire, Box, and GitHub) to manage files. It includes an integrated CDN, using Cloudflare and Akamai for lightning-fast global deploys, a visual dashboard, and detailed, accurate analytics data sent to Google Analytics and Mixpanel.

The enterprise-file distribution network delivers:

  • Continuous integration that syncs from your cloud storage or version control system to a global Content Delivery Network
  • Foolproof Analytics that works regardless of Ad-Blockers and integrates with MixPanel or Google Analytics
  • High performance, low latency enterprise-grade infrastructure that scales reliably
  • Large file support, with individual files up to 20GB each
  • Simple Pricing, with no storage fees
  • A free tier offering 100GB transfer a month, forever
  • Free unlimited DNS
  • Custom domains with automatic and free SSL (HTTPS)
  • Automatic image optimization and code minification
  • Customization features such as Password Protection, Automatic Directory Listings, and Custom Error Pages

Edgenuity Earns “A” Grade from Florida Department of Education

The role of instruction in determining student success cannot be overstated. It is because of the hardworking, highly-qualified, state-certified teachers who have routinely gone above and beyond in instruction and student engagement that Edgenuity earned this designation.

Edgenuity, an approved Virtual Instruction Program (VIP) Provider in the state of Florida, announced today that it has earned an “A” grade for its virtual instruction during the 2018-2019 school year in grades 6-12 from the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Accountability Reporting.

The Florida Department of Education’s school grading system is designed to convey the achievement level of Florida’s schools. School and district grades describe instructional personnel and administrators’ impact on student learning, including ratings based upon aggregated assessment scores among other factors. Edgenuity’s “A” grade was earned on the basis of both curriculum development and the success of instruction, including student performance on state assessments and engagement with the material.

“Edgenuity is proud to be recognized with a top-level grade by the state’s Department of Education for what we accomplished last year as an approved provider of virtual instruction programs in the state of Florida,” said Kinsey Rawe, Edgenuity’s Vice President and General Manager, Instructional Services. “Beyond providing a curriculum to districts, this “A” grade is a testament to the active role Edgenuity has been able to play in student learning, especially through combining our award-winning curriculum with an engaging instructional model. We appreciate the opportunity to know and work closely with students, as well as with districts to underscore the importance of engagement, testing and implementing virtual programs with fidelity.”

By partnering with Edgenuity as a virtual program option, schools and districts expand educational options for students while also solving many common challenges such as: addressing temporary and long-term teacher shortages; offering comprehensive test preparation; and providing support for students who are homebound or have other unique needs.

“The role of instruction in determining student success cannot be overstated,” added Rawe. “It is because of the hardworking, highly-qualified, state-certified teachers who have routinely gone above and beyond in instruction and student engagement that Edgenuity earned this designation. It has been a great privilege for us to work alongside Florida’s districts, to not only develop a state-of-the-art virtual curriculum for the state’s students, but to see that curriculum brought to life in a way that makes a direct impact on their success and enthusiasm for learning.”

The state of Florida is a nationally-recognized leader in K-12 virtual education. It has the largest state virtual school in the nation and each school district is required to provide virtual education options for their students. Florida’s approved virtual school programs are held accountable for student and school performance. Edgenuity Instructional Services earned the “A” grade for 2018-19 based on the evaluation method established in accordance with Florida’s annual accountability process.

The Florida Department of Education’s Accountability Reports are published online and available here.

e-TeleQuote Reaches 100,000 Active Clients Milestone

“We’re so proud to help people enroll in Medicare plans that fit their needs,” says Anthony P. Solazzo, CEO of e-TeleQuote. “The popularity of Medicare Advantage plans continues to increase as more people discover the benefits available, and we’re excited and grateful to grow and serve more people.”

e-TeleQuote Insurance, Inc., the owner and operator of easyMedicare.com, is delighted to announce it has helped over 100,000 Medicare beneficiaries find a plan that meets their needs. By helping people in a variety of ways, including through its newly launched online enrollment portal, the digital marketplace reached the achievement during this year’s Medicare Annual Enrollment Period.

The Annual Enrollment Period (also called Open Enrollment) occurs every year from October 15 to December 7 and provides an opportunity for people to enroll in or change Medicare plans. This year is an especially important time for Medicare beneficiaries to review their current coverage and consider new options that may be available. Due to recent changes made by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), some Medicare Advantage plans are offering new benefits such as home helpers/in-home support, transportation, meal delivery, safety/assistive devices, day center visits and more.
