West Monroe Partners and Con Edison Recognized for Creating One of the 10 Best Intranets of 2020

Creating a modern, digital workplace is not just about technology. A vital first step in this process is developing a very thorough understanding of how employees work and how they work together.

West Monroe Partners, a national business and technology consultancy, today announced that Con Edison’s new intranet, “Conor,” has been recognized among the top 10 intranets of 2020 by Nielsen Norman Group. The redesigned intranet, first introduced to employees in February 2018, is featured in detail in Nielsen Norman Group’s new report, Intranet Design Annual 2020: The Year’s 10 Best Intranets.

West Monroe and Con Edison, one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy-delivery companies, collaborated to develop Conor. The intranet brings more than 15,000 employees across several utility subsidiaries together in one modern, digital workplace that promotes the company’s safety, engagement, operational excellence, and customer service goals. Its many new features include enhanced search and navigation capabilities, a standard look-and-feel, the ability to personalize content by role and municipal borough, and redesigned employee communications, as well as digital forms that streamline work.

“Our intranet serves people in diverse roles, so it is important that it offers a flexible and fluid way to surface content that is highly relevant to users and targets communications to the right groups,” said Lionel Ing, Con Edison’s project sponsor. “In addition to helping us achieve critical business goals, modernizing our workplace will save on costs by reducing the time employees spend locating tools and information, employing standard templates to develop departmental content and sites, and introducing new digital forms with automated workflows.”

Most Con Edison employees use Conor every day. Satisfaction with the new intranet increased 30% following the launch. Additionally, search utilization increased by 50%, enabling greater employee self-service and engagement. Through the project, Con Edison reduced intranet content from more than 1,200 pages to just 120 pages.

West Monroe and Con Edison designed Conor for employees, first and foremost. They relied on agile principles to design and deploy Conor and targeted four prime user personas to guide the development effort.

“Creating a modern, digital workplace is not just about technology. A vital first step in this process is developing a very thorough understanding of how employees work and how they work together. This guides thinking about how the new intranet solution could help create a more productive, connected, empowered, and engaged workforce,” said Kaumil Dalal, director in West Monroe’s Technology practice. “Another factor that contributed to the project’s success was Con Edison’s commitment to a comprehensive change management approach that targeted adoption and buy-in from the Corporate Affairs team and departmental content managers and authors, as well as employee users of the site.”

The project team developed Conor on the SharePoint platform, serving as a portal to other internal systems, various external services relevant to employees’ daily work, and other collaboration sites.

“Con Edison has embraced the fact that, in this industry at this time, like in other industries, winning in the marketplace starts with winning in the workplace,” said Paul A. DeCotis, senior director and leader of West Monroe’s East Coast Energy & Utilities team. “In our recent study, more than 60% of utility industry employees indicated their workplace technology needs at least some updating. Taking bold steps to modernize the workplace, as Con Edison has, not only strengthens operations today. It creates an environment that can attract the talent and emerging digital skills that utilities need for the future.”

Nielsen Norman Group chose the winning intranets through an expert review, based on design and usability, from an international field of dozens of submissions.

vFairs Launches Feature-Rich JOB BOARD to Eliminate All Manual Efforts

We identified this problem time and time again with the several customers who conduct virtual job fairs for us and with our job board product, we aim to lay these obstacles to rest – once and for all.

After leading the market as a top-rated online event platform, vFairs continues innovating to address pain points in the recruitment sector. vFairs has revamped its Job Board offering with a new look and feel, and brand new feature set designed to solve issues such as data entry that universities have historically struggled with.

When implementing a job board, universities and colleges have to assign resources to either chase down employers to keep updating their jobs or manually copy over the latest job listings and expire closed ones. For a number of organizations, this challenge becomes an obstacle in adopting job boards. However, vFairs aims to solve this with a unique solution.

With every job board instance, vFairs also offers a scraping service to automatically harvest job postings from career sites of partner employers and publish them on the job board. Universities simply indicate who their affiliated employers are or share consolidated Excel sheets, and vFairs takes care of the rest. This eliminates the typical hassle university representatives face and their work is reduced to minimal moderation tasks.

Here are other highlights of the vFairs job board platform:

  • The Job Board remains live throughout the year and isn’t dependent on the core product (virtual job fairs). This expands opportunities for both employers and candidates to recruit and apply for positions all-round the year.
  • Job seekers can have access to job descriptions, save jobs, and apply with just a few clicks. They can also choose to set up alerts for upcoming jobs, eliminating their chance to miss out on an opportunity.
  • On the other hand, employers can advertise vacancies and access applications, not just for their posted jobs, but also for the entire resume database present on the job board.

“We understand that Career Services focus on facilitating the connecting between top employers and their student base but don’t have the liberty to spare resources to drive a technological product and operations. We identified this problem time and time again with the several customers who conduct virtual job fairs for us and with our job board product, we aim to lay these obstacles to rest – once and for all,” says Muhammad Younas, CEO at vFairs.

About vFairs: vFairs is a top-rated Virtual Event Platform that enables and equips organizers to make strong, valuable connections with their target audience. Ensuring their virtual event delivers the results that customers desire, vFairs has been succeeding in providing an alternative to physical events such as job fairs and career fairs to leading companies and universities like Nestle, T-Mobile, American Public University System (APUS), Rasmussen College, Tulare County Office of Education (TCOE), University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and many others.

EconoFact Awarded $50,000 Grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

Visit https://econofact.org/

“We founded EconoFact on the premise that there is both a need, and a desire, for quality, non-partisan resources that inform the public about the most important economic issues of our time,” said EconoFact Founder and Executive Editor Michael Klein, who is also a professor at The Fletcher School.

EconoFact, a non-profit media initiative published by the Murrow Center for a Digital World at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, is pleased to announce that it was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The grant will be administered by Tufts University, and will help to expand the scope, exposure and distribution of its non-partisan economic analyses.

EconoFact has assembled a network of more than 90 economists across the United States to contribute their expertise on timely economic policy issues, ranging from education and immigration to criminal justice and climate change. EconoFact shares this expertise through written memos, videos, and its Data Point series of compelling statistics to make the information and ideas accessible to a general audience. Since its inception in January 2017, EconoFact has achieved more than one million page views, developing a strong following among researchers, academics, government analysts and the media. In this respect, EconoFact aligns with the Sloan Foundation’s mission by serving as a resource for thought leaders, as well as the wider public, who want access to informed, expert opinion without a political slant.

“Through the leadership of Professor Michael Klein, EconoFact has demonstrated how collaboration in our community can have real-world impact on important policy discussions,” said Rachel Kyte, Dean of The Fletcher School. “We are excited to have the opportunity to expand this effort thanks to the generosity of the Sloan Foundation.”

EconoFact’s contributors, several of whom have served in policy positions such as chief economists in the U.S. Treasury and Labor Departments, as well as in leading roles in academia, are not financially compensated. They choose to participate in the initiative out of a sense of civic responsibility and a desire for civic engagement.

“We founded EconoFact on the premise that there is both a need, and a desire, for quality, non-partisan resources that inform the public about the most important economic issues of our time,” said Prof. Klein, EconoFact’s Founder and Executive Editor. “We are pleased with the response to our efforts, and look forward to continuing to grow this initiative with the help of our generous supporters.”

Israel Bar Associations’ Extradition and Internal Crimes Committee Receives Attorney Sharon Nahari as New Appointed Co-Chairman

Attorney Sharon Nahari can take the credit for the proposal of the Extradition and International Crimes Committee. Mr. Nahari presented the idea to Chairman Attorney Avi Himi, who then launched it and has brought it to fruition. This committee will follow the mandate that other committees operate with work being performed at no charge. The committee will be the liaison between the elected officials of the Bar association, the senior executives and the rank and file attorneys as it pertains to the practice issues.

Attorney Sharon Nahari brings to the committee his experience and expertise as an attorney that has specialized in the two important areas of law being white-collar crime and overall criminal lawyer with a special interest in extradition and international crime. The law offices of Mr. Nahari has an outreach in countries such as the US and Asia as well as throughout Europe.

Added to Attorney Sharon Nahari’s credentials is his appointment as Israel’s representative, where he attended the DELF Forum special conference in this capacity. This Defense Extradition Lawyers Forum was held in London for the purposes of the discussion of the elimination of Interpol arrest warrants, and Red Notice alerts. Other important topics were discussed such as politics and international extradition connections.

Attorney Nahari has indicated that the forming of this new committee is a clear indicator of how important international and extradition laws governing Israel have been in the past. The participation between countries worldwide via collaboration has been successful in expanding enforcement collaborations on economic, technological and trade levels.

The state of Israel and International Treaties – Extradition Laws

The state of Israel is proud of its involvement in the international treaties on extradition laws that encompass conventions such as the Palmero Convention (Convention on Organized Crime) the UN Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Vienna Convention).

The international treaties also include the laws for various international crimes such as taxation, cyber-crimes — the laundering of money, and computer crimes.

The state of Israel is one of the UN member states, and as such works closely with the UN Police Intelligence Organization (Interpol).Beyond this is the State’s working relationship via bilateral treaties with other countries such as Australia, Thailand, the US and Canada and others for fighting crime.

Tool for Analytics-Powered Decision Models in the Microsoft Ecosystem

Example Analytic Solver optimization model - finds the least-cost rotations for air;line crews while covering all scheduled flights.

Analytic Solver – Airline Crew Scheduling

Other vendors are talking about ‘democratizing analytics’ through easier to use tools — but Frontline has been delivering on this vision for years.

Frontline Systems, developer of the Solver in desktop Microsoft Excel®, has released Analytic Solver® V2020, a SaaS (software as a service) cloud and desktop platform that offers Excel-savvy business analysts point-and-click tools to create predictive and prescriptive analytics models themselves, without needing expert data scientists or programmers.

Available now in Microsoft AppSource, Analytic Solver (simulation and optimization) and Analytic Solver Data Mining (forecasting and machine learning) are the only next-generation “Office add-ins” for analytics models available that work in a browser with Excel for the Web, as well as in desktop Excel for Windows and Macintosh. A companion ‘Windows desktop-only’ version is also available for download from https://www.solver.com, for users in firms who haven’t yet upgraded to Office 365 subscription versions.

Creation and Deployment of Decision Models

Analytic Solver V2020 complements RASON V2020, Frontline’s JavaScript-embedded analytics modeling language and REST API, that makes model deployment and management easy for users of Microsoft Azure, Dynamics 365, Office 365, and the Power Platform (Power BI for business intelligence, Power Apps for custom applications, and Power Automate for orchestrating business workflows).

Analytic Solver V2020 has been rewritten from the ground up using JavaScript, REST API, Azure and Office 365 technologies, but it inherits the full power and ease of use of Frontline Systems’ analytics software from over 25 years’ experience supporting business analysts using these methods in practice.

“Other vendors are talking about ‘democratizing analytics’ through easier to use tools,” said Daniel Fylstra, Frontline’s President and CEO, “but Frontline has been delivering on this vision for years.”

User Interface Familiar to Business Users

Analytic Solver V2020 offers a user interface with a Ribbon and drop-down menu choices, a Task Pane for model analysis and navigation, and the full range of Excel features for model building, whether it’s used in a browser, on Windows, or on Macintosh. All the elements of optimization, simulation/risk analysis, and data mining models are saved in the user’s Excel workbook, which can be transferred freely between cloud and desktop. Unlike other prescriptive analytics tools, models and their results are ‘fully transparent’ as Excel spreadsheets, readily understood at all levels of management.

DMN-Compatible Business Rules and Decision Tables

Analytic Solver V2020 (the only Excel-based tool) and RASON V2020 both support creation and editing of business rules in decision tables in a form compatible with the DMN 1.2 open standard and its FEEL (Friendly Enough Expression Language) – first published by the OMG (Object Management Group) in 2015, and now a widely used alternative to proprietary business rules languages. Unlike other business rule systems where analytics is only a recent addition, Analytic Solver and RASON were designed from the ground up to use the full power of predictive and prescriptive analytics with business rules, to enable companies to implement “analytics-powered decision management” with far less time, risk and cost.

Optimization and Simulation/Risk Analysis Enhancements

Analytic Solver V2020 also features speed and functionality enhancements for analytics, even compared to Analytic Solver V2019 which is just six months old. Its built-in LP/Quadratic Solver, used for linear, quadratic (LP/QP) and mixed-integer (MIP) optimization models, is significantly faster and exploits all available processor cores. Its ultra-fast Monte Carlo Simulation engine features 36 new or enhanced probability distribution, statistics and property functions. This release also features new, faster versions of the Gurobi Solver V9.0, with a new ability to solve non-convex quadratic models; the Xpress Solver V35, with a new Solution Refiner, and the Artelys Knitro Solver V12.1, with SOCP and MIP speedups.

Frontline Systems Inc. (https://www.solver.com) is the alternative to analytics complexity, helping business analysts and managers gain insights and make better decisions for an uncertain future, without the cost, delays and risk of ‘big vendor’ tools. Its products integrate forecasting and data mining for “predictive analytics,” Monte Carlo simulation and risk analysis, and conventional and stochastic optimization for “prescriptive analytics.” Founded in 1987, Frontline is based in Incline Village, Nevada (775-831-0300).

Azure, Dynamics, Microsoft Office, Excel, Power BI, Power Apps and Power Automate are trademarks of Microsoft Corp. Gurobi is a trademark of Gurobi Optimization Inc. Xpress is a trademark of FICO Inc. Artelys Knitro is a trademark of Artelys Corp. Analytic Solver® and RASON® are registered trademarks of Frontline Systems, Inc.

Taxback International tackles the growing complexity of VAT compliance obligations across Europe

Catherin Quirke, Chief Commercial Officer for Taxback International, shared on The CEO Views the myriad of ways the company’s 23 years of experience give them the insight needed to deal with the ever changing and complex landscape of VAT compliance. One of the newest changes is the widespread digitalisation of tax systems which means they are changing faster than ever before.

Making Tax Digital for VAT (MTDfV) in the UK and Immediate Information System (SII) in Spain are examples of fully digitised systems and as digitalisation becomes even more common, businesses may be left racing to keep up with EU SAF-T reporting, changes in penalty regime and real-time reporting. Taxback International is one of the companies stepping in to ease the burden.

The pace and intricacies of these changes are putting a heavy load on VAT managers as they work to avoid penalties, worry about VAT thresholds, keep track of obligations and when/where VAT registrations are required. When even the smallest of mistakes can result in VAT compliance breaches which can lead to substantial penalties and consequences, Taxback International’s mission is to reduce VAT stress, remove the risk to managers’ reputations and also ensure all obligations are correctly identified and met. Taxback International Chief Innovation Officer, Eamon Clune says:

“My areas of expertise are machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and Robotic Process Automation, so seeing this evolution and further progression into digitalisation is very exciting. I can’t think of anything more appealing than researching and exploring new technologies to use in tackling these new challenges.”
