VT MAK Successfully Completes Technical Assessment on the U.S. Army’s Synthetic Training Environment

VT MAK supports soldiers conducting a recent technical assessment at the U.S. Army STE Technology Integration Facility in Orlando, Fla.

VT MAK (MAK), a company of ST Engineering North America, today announced that it has successfully completed a programmatic milestone by demonstrating the core technologies that make up the U.S. Army’s Synthetic Training Environment’s (STE) Common Synthetic Environment (CSE), integrated with the One World terrain (OWT) and the Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainer (RVCT) devices. The technical assessment was the second of a series of program milestones in which MAK is making capabilities available to the Army for hands-on evaluation as part of an agile development process.

The CSE, developed by MAK, consists of the Training Management Tool (TMT) which enables soldiers to plan, prepare, execute, and assess training exercises, and the Training Simulation Software (TSS) which provides the simulation environment for the trainees as well as the simulation of the non-player characters.

At the assessment, MAK used vignettes to demonstrate progress against program requirements. Afterward, soldiers sat down with MAK engineers in a one-on-one setting to delve deep into specific capabilities.

Soldiers then independently conducted an end-to-end training exercise beginning with planning the exercise, assigning simulated entities to the hardware available, starting the execution of the scenario, recording the execution for After Action Review (AAR), and finishing with conducting the AAR with the training audience.

“Soldier touch points are critical to this development process as they ensure that the project is meeting the end users’ needs,” said Dr. Christina Bouwens, Deputy Program Manager, VT MAK. Warfighters participated as role players interacting in a common scenario on the Ft. Hood terrain controlling ground vehicles running on RVCT hardware through a hardware abstraction layer, and dismounted units using RVCT Soldier stations.

The TMT provided an intuitive, user-friendly capability that integrated unit training information with training readiness requirements, prepped and launched training activities, and drove assessment activities, all from a single workstation.

MAK demonstrated progress toward the longer-term scalability goals – including a cloud-based demonstration of VR-Forces integrated with Improbable’s SpatialOS framework; and an on-premise preview of MAK’s internally-developed scalability framework – managing and communicating with more than two million entities.

Integration with STE-related Science & Technology (S&T) technology was shown, including: The Leidos-developed Behavior Service for including authoritative legacy data sources and behaviors into the TSS and TMT; and The Augmented REality Sandtable (ARES) visualization capability demonstrating an augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) view of the simulation environment for collaborative training coordination.

The STE Common Synthetic Environment project continues to make significant progress, paving the way for a successful initial operational capability. MAK will provide another report after the next assessment in March, and will continue to be transparent about the process as it develops.

“STE is a transformative moment for the simulation world, the Army, and VT MAK. We continue making positive progress on this project by delivering state-of-the-art capabilities and support in a way that is consistent yet innovative,” said Bill Cole, President and CEO of VT MAK.

Ivey Engineering Awards $1,000 Scholarship to York College of Pennsylvania Sophomore Gregory Moser

Gregory Moser is Ivey Engineering's sixth winner of the bi-annual essay scholarship contest.

Gregory Moser

I believe goal setting is extremely important. I want to help people reach their financial goals for retirement and saving for college. It would be rewarding to help open people’s eyes to the investment opportunities available.

Ivey Engineering, Inc., (IEI), an engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Gregory Moser of New Freedom, Pennsylvania, is the winner of the winter 2019 bi-annual scholarship essay contest. He is currently a sophomore at York College of Pennsylvania and is majoring in finance.

“Thank you so much for informing me of this terrific news and helping me to advance my education,” says Moser, after finding out he won the scholarship.

Moser chose the finance field due to his interest in investing and money management.

“I find great satisfaction in helping people and organizations meet their financial goals through proper money management,” he says.

Moser competed with more than 100 other college students from the United States and Canada. Applicants were tasked to write an 800- to 1,000-word essay on one of three topics and were judged for creativity and originality. Moser’s winning essay discusses the pros and cons of buying a tankless water heater. He mentions that two advantages of a tankless water heater are longevity and energy efficiency.

“Most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of about 20 years, which is nearly double that of traditional tank water heaters, which only last 10 to 15 years,” Moser explains in his essay. “Aside from their high life expectancy, tankless water heaters are also much more energy efficient than tank-based water heaters, as they use roughly 30 to 50 percent less power than their counterparts,” he says.

“Gregory’s essay is well written and backed up with supporting information,” says Scott Friesen, president of IEI. “Based on the quality of his essay, you know Gregory spent considerable time doing research on the subject,” he says.

Moser sees himself in the future graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in finance and working for a company that rewards him both financially and personally.

“I believe goal setting is extremely important,” Moser says. “I want to help people reach their financial goals for retirement and saving for college. It would be rewarding to help open people’s eyes to the investment opportunities available.”

“We’re impressed with Gregory’s motivation and outlook for the future,” Friesen says. “We know the value of a college education and wish the best for Gregory as he pursues his goals.”

Any potential or current college or university undergraduate student within the United States or Canada is able to apply for the scholarship. The next deadline for essay submissions is May 1, 2020. For contest requirements or for more information about the scholarship, visit IEI’s scholarship web page.

The Center for Responsible Enterprise And Trade – CREATe.org

“CREATe.org was founded with the mission of providing leading approaches and practical guidance for companies so that they can improve governance and better manage risks across value chains. We are excited about these outstanding organizations and projects,” said Pamela Passman, CEO of CREATe.org

The Center for Responsible Enterprise And Trade (CREATe.org) today announces the award of four grants to fund projects that build upon CREATe.org’s mission of providing practical resources to educate organizations on managing risk and improving governance and compliance.

The grants have been awarded to the following organizations and projects:

  • Coalition for Integrity–Guidance for corporations in developing or acquiring AI for use in their anti-corruption risk and compliance programs;
  • National Bureau of Asian Research–How organizations can apply emerging technologies–AI, data analytics and blockchain–to improve security of supply chains and better protect intellectual property (IP);
  • The Center for Cybersecurity Law and Policy–Creation of a multi-stakeholder forum to advance an international standard on cybersecurity risk management through dialogues and publications;
  • Global Trade Secret Institute (University of Akron)–Development of a Trade Secret Legal Risk Assessment Guide for aligning leading practices for protecting trade secrets with legal risk.

The projects focus on the key areas of risk that CREATe.org has championed since its founding in 2011: anti-corruption; cybersecurity; intellectual property (IP) and trade secret protection; and the ethics and responsibilities of artificial intelligence.

“CREATe.org was founded with the mission of providing leading approaches and practical guidance for companies so that they can improve governance and better manage risks across value chains. We are excited about these outstanding organizations and projects,” stated Pamela Passman, President and CEO of CREATe.org.

Additional Grant Information

Coalition for Integrity

The Coalition for Integrity project involves developing a detailed set of guidance and best practices that companies can use when deciding: (1) whether to develop and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) as an integrated component of their anti-corruption risk and compliance programs; and (2) how to maintain such AI programs in a manner consistent with legal and ethical obligations and regulatory expectations.

“As anti-corruption risks for businesses increase, artificial intelligence has the potential to analyze massive quantities of data to identify potential patterns of corrupt conduct and aid in the prevention, detection, and reduction of corruption. The Coalition for Integrity is delighted to receive the grant from CREATe. org to produce guidance in an area that has largely been unexplored.” – Shruti Shah, President & CEO of the Coalition for Integrity.

National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR)

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) will investigate the application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and blockchain to improve the security of U.S. corporate supply chains. The research team will develop recommendations for companies across a variety of sectors on currently available technologies and opportunities to invest in new technological solutions to resolve difficult supply chain problems, such as the introduction of counterfeit components, theft of intellectual property (IP), cybersecurity breaches, or engagement with corrupt or sanctioned entities in sub-supplier networks.

“NBR has long recognized that supply chain security is central to protecting IP and reducing the risks of counterfeit components,” said NBR President Roy Kamphausen. “This new project will engage top experts in cybersecurity, AI, and other technologies to employ new approaches to these supply chain challenges and thereby enhance U.S. economic and national security. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work on this critical set of issues, thanks to the support of CREATe.org.”

The Center for Cybersecurity Law and Policy

Worldwide, governments and industry sectors are actively looking to manage cybersecurity risk through the development and implementation of standards. Often, these standards are put into place without careful consideration of the long-term impact to economic well-being. Multinational companies seeking to align with effective standards themselves, will increasingly struggle to meet multiple mandatory standards in different countries and regions which will have direct economic costs to their customers. This project will create a forum for cybersecurity practitioners, advocacy organizations, governments, and industry to come together around the singular focus of promoting an international standard on cybersecurity risk management that benefits all stakeholders.

“The Center for Cybersecurity Policy and Law shares CREATe’s mission of promoting international cybersecurity standards and best practices in a way that can be effectively implemented, measured, and improved by organizations of all shapes and sizes. Through this project, we look forward to engaging government and industry in ways that better manage risk.” – Ari Schwartz, Executive Coordinator, Center for Cybersecurity Policy and Law

Global Trade Secret Institute

The Global Trade Secret Institute (GTSI) at the University of Akron School of Law is creating a Trade Secret Legal Risk Assessment guide, which will help businesses align their practices for protecting their trade secrets with the legal risks posed by doing business across borders. GTSI also publishes the Trade Secret Protection Index, a tool that rates the national laws and procedures for protecting trade secrets around the globe. The Legal Risk Assessment guide will help trade secret owners to identify when and where they must be particularly vigilant about protecting their trade secrets. The Guide will give them tools for particularly high-risk environments.

“This is yet another terrific opportunity for the Global Trade Secret Institute and CREATe to collaborate once again. We previously co-produced a guide for the Government of India to train small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in protecting their trade secrets. Our worldwide legal knowledge combined with CREATe’s practical expertise is a strong combination, helping trade secret owners to understand their risks while giving them the tools they need to mitigate them.” Mark F. Schultz, Director, Intellectual Property and Technology Law Program, University of Akron School of Law

Koupon Partners with National Retail Solutions to Bring Digital Promotions to Independently Owned Convenience Stores

News Image

This partnership marks an incredible turning point for the industry. Tapping into the expansive network of independent c-stores unlocks an entirely new audience for CPG brands – Brad Van Otterloo, CEO of Koupon

Koupon, the leading promotion solution in small format retail, is announcing a partnership with National Retail Solutions, the leader in Point of Sale technology for independently owned convenience stores. This partnership will enable CPG brands in the Koupon Network to deliver promotions across NRS’ network of independently owned c-stores.

More than 100,000 c-stores are labeled as independent, which makes up more than two-thirds of the US market. Collectively, these stores present a massive opportunity. “Independently owned c-stores are responsible for a large portion of CPG sales, but the size and complexity of this market has inhibited CPG brands from launching digital marketing campaigns,” said Jacob Jonas, VP of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships for NRS. “We’re incredibly excited to partner with Koupon to provide our retailers with impactful campaigns and streamline the distribution process for brands and retailers alike.”

The Koupon-NRS partnership signifies the growing importance of CPG brands and independent c-stores working together. By combining the collective buying power of thousands of independently owned c-stores, NRS provides brands with a seamless point of distribution. Brands in the Koupon Network can now easily launch campaigns across these retailers to drive awareness, expand reach, and close distribution gaps.

“This partnership marks an incredible turning point for the industry. Tapping into the expansive network of independent c-stores unlocks an entirely new audience for CPG brands,” said Brad Van Otterloo, CEO of Koupon. “Historically, the industry has lacked a solution to leverage the independent market. Koupon is thrilled to be working with NRS to close the gap between brands and independent c-stores, while driving sales and delivering value to shoppers.”

“The feedback we’re receiving from retailers proves the value of this partnership. We are always looking for cutting edge solutions to help our retailers stand out from competitors, and our partnership with Koupon elevates our stores to a new level,” said Elie Katz, CEO of NRS.

About Koupon

Koupon provides c-store retailers and brands with the easiest way to connect and engage with shoppers to grow sales. Koupon works with brands to easily deploy personalized, channel-wide promotions, and helps retailers to secure additional brand trade spending and grow shopper engagement.
