Chicago United names Tiffany Hamel Johnson as its new President and CEO

The board of Chicago United, the city’s leading advocacy organization for multiracial leadership in business, today announced that Tiffany Hamel Johnson will become the new president and chief executive officer of the 52-year-old organization. Hamel-Johnson joins the organization from World Business Chicago, where she is the organization’s second-in-command as executive vice president of strategy and administration.

Hamel Johnson will take the helm on April 13. She will be the first African-American woman to fill the role. As president and CEO, she will direct programs and facilitate connections that support Chicago United’s corporate members as they advance diversity and inclusion across their enterprises. She succeeds Gloria Castillo, who announced her retirement in May 2019.

Previously, Hamel Johnson has served as the City of Chicago’s deputy chief neighborhood development officer under former Mayor Rahm Emanuel; chief of staff at the Chicago Urban League; and, the chief executive officer of Windy City Harvest.

Among her accomplishments, Hamel Johnson helped direct the launch of the IMPACT Leadership Development Program at the Chicago Urban League; she directed sales and marketing of a $200 million, mixed-income residential development on Chicago’s South Side for Granite Development Company, and; she was the project manager for the efforts to bring The Boeing Company’s corporate headquarters to Chicago during her tenure at World Business Chicago.

“It is an understatement to say that I’m excited to step into this role,” said Hamel Johnson. “I’m thrilled about this opportunity. I have worked across a variety of sectors, and I have seen the impact that diversity and inclusion strategies can have on Chicago. Chicago United has long stood for opening access and opportunity and elevating business leaders who are committed to making Chicago a city that works for everyone. I’m eager to build on this legacy and do my part to help our city move forward.”

Hamel Johnson was the unanimous choice of a search committee comprised of members of Chicago United’s board of directors. The committee conducted a national search in partnership with Koya Leadership Partners, the executive search firm that specializes in placing CEOs in mission-driven roles and is a leader in the field of diversity, equity and inclusion.

“We are excited to announce Tiffany as the new leader of this special organization,” said Kip Kelley, chief executive officer of Aon Affinity USA and chairman of the Chicago United board. “The entire board believes Tiffany’s experience in Chicago’s corporate, civic, non-profit and government realms makes her uniquely qualified for this role. I thank our search committee for conducting a robust search. Lastly, I give my deep thanks to Gloria Castillo for her standard-setting leadership for more than 15 years and her assistance in the leadership transition in the next few months.”

John C. Robak, chief executive officer of global engineering firm Greeley and Hansen and vice chairman of the Chicago United board of directors, led the board’s executive search committee. He said the process yielded a number of strong candidates from the city and beyond. Hamel Johnson, he said, presented a vision for Chicago United informed by her familiarity with the business and non-profit landscape and her accomplishments as a strategist for inclusive economic growth in the region.

“Tiffany is a lifelong Chicagoan who has assumed progressively demanding responsibilities throughout her career,” Robak said. “The search committee recognized her as someone with a calling to advocate for inclusive opportunity for all Chicagoans. Chicago United will benefit from her unique view of the city, and the board looks forward to supporting her plans to drive corporate diversity and inclusion.”

Why Should Drivers Compare Online Car Insurance Quotes

News Image

“Drivers can save money if they compare online car insurance quotes”, said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Car insurance is mandatory for drivers that want to drive legally on US roads. Those who are caught by authorities driving without insurance will have to pay hefty fines.

The main reasons to compare online car insurance quotes are the following:

  • Policyholders can save money. Comparing online car insurance quotes will help drivers save hundreds of dollars before purchasing car insurance. Policyholders should compare different offers from various insurers. The easiest way to do that is by using a brokerage website. Brokerage websites will provide multiple offers from various insurance companies with just one search. Drivers will save time, by not having to go to multiple sites and fill insurance forms every time they go to a new site.
  • Online questionnaires are complex and they can help drivers prepare for the negations with the insurance agent. Many brokerage websites have complex, extensive questionnaires that will return accurate estimates. Usually, the questionnaires will ask info about the car manufacturer, model, fabrication year, type of car, approximate mileage per year. Online forms will also require some personal information like recent DUI incidents, workplace, if the driver owns the car and so on.
  • Quotes are fast and easy to obtain. The internet can help drivers to obtain car insurance quotes in just several seconds. Also, policyholders can obtain online quotes sitting comfortably in their homes.

The Most Valuable Car Insurance Add-Ons Drivers Should Buy

News Image

“Adding several add-ons to a policy can help drivers to save money in certain situations like first-time car accidents, or if their cars break down in the middle of the road”, said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Compare-autoinsurance.org has launched a new blog post that explains what add-ons should be purchased along with car insurance.

For more info and free quotes, please visit: https://compare-autoinsurance.org/policy-add-ons-consider-buying/

Most states have a minimum amount of liability coverage that drivers are required to carry in order to legally drive on their roads. Besides that, many insurance companies will offer different optional add-ons that can help drivers to better customize their policies.

Drivers should consider buying the following add-ons:

  • Accident forgiveness. This add-on will allow drivers to maintain their insurance rates at the same price, in case they are at-fault in a car accident. In many cases, this add-on is only available when the first car accident happens. Depending on the insurance companies, this service can be offered for free or it can be purchased. To be eligible for this add-on, drivers will need to have a clean driving record.
  • Roadside assistance. This service covers mobile repairs and towing services that will be needed if a car breaks down while on the road. If a vehicle cannot be repaired while on the spot, then the vehicle will be towed to the nearest repair shop.
  • Vanishing deductible. More and more insurance companies offer this service to their customers. This add-on will reduce the policyholder’s deductibles value with a certain amount (usually $50-$100) for each year that this add-on remains active. In some cases, the value of the deductible can reach to zero. As long as the driver makes no claims, this add-on will remain active.
  • Gap insurance. Policyholders that drive brand new cars that are being financed, should consider buying this add-on. Gap insurance will help drivers pay the difference between the insurers’ determined cash value of a vehicle at the time of the accident and the total amount of money drivers owe to their lenders. Usually, gap coverage is only available to drivers that have already purchased collision and comprehensive coverage.

When Should Drivers Drop Comprehensive Coverage

News Image

“Safe drivers that keep their cars in a garage can save car insurance money if they drop comprehensive coverage.”, said Russell Rabichev, Marketing Director of Internet Marketing Company.

Full coverage can be very expensive. Over time, as their cars depreciate in value, drivers should reconsider their insurance needs and options.

Comprehensive coverage protects the policyholders in a wide range of scenarios like vandalism, flooding, falling debris or fire. Comprehensive coverage can also protect in possible scenarios where the drivers may have some control, such as not parking the car in a dangerous location, or leaving valuable goods unattended in the vehicle. Policyholders can consider dropping comprehensive coverage in the following situations:

  • If they keep their cars parked in a garage. Keeping the car parked in a garage will significantly lower the chance of it being stolen or being damaged by a severe weather event.
  • Drivers that don’t travel often are less likely to have their cars stolen. Many drivers that don’t venture out of their state, know where to safely park their vehicle in their own state.
  • Policyholders that are safe drivers can consider dropping comprehensive coverage. If they consider they won’t hit large animals that can seriously damage their cars, then they can save money by dropping comprehensive coverage.
  • Drivers that don’t leave valuable items unattended in their vehicles are less likely to have their valuable items or cars stolen. Valuable goods like smartphones, tablets, notebooks, jewelry are tempting prey for thieves that can act in a few seconds.

AI Drives Patent Applications from U.S. Companies at the European Patent Office to New Record High

News Image

Europe remains a highly relevant technology market for U.S. companies, knowing they can rely on a quality patent system that helps them build strong IP portfolios.

The European Patent Office (EPO) today announced that U.S. companies and inventors filed over 46,200 European patent applications in 2019, 5.5% more than in the previous year, according to its Patent Index 2019 (Graph: Growth of patent applications at the EPO from the U.S.). With a share of 25% of all patent applications, the U.S. remained the most active country of origin for patent applications filed with the EPO (Graph: Origin of applications).

The growth in patent applications from the U.S. was largely driven by the rise of 5G and artificial intelligence (AI): there were strong increases in computer technology, where many of the patent applications in AI are filed (+13.6%, following a decrease of 2.2% in the previous year), and in digital communication, which includes the technologies that are central to implementing 5G networks (+14.6%, following a decrease of 7.5% in the previous year).

“Patent applications from the U.S. grew strongly at the EPO in 2019, with the U.S. being one of the main drivers in making digital communication and computer technology the fastest rising technology fields,” said EPO President António Campinos. “This shows that Europe remains a highly relevant technology market for U.S. companies, knowing they can rely on a quality patent system that helps them build strong IP portfolios.”

Overall, the European Patent Office received 181,000 patent applications in 2019, an increase of 4% compared to 2018 (Graph: Growth of European patent applications). The growth was mainly fueled by significantly more applications coming from China (+29.2% over 2018), the U.S. and South Korea (+14.1%). (Graph: Top 50 countries for applications). In the past decade, patent filings from China with the EPO have increased nearly six-fold (12,247 applications in 2019 vs. 2,061 in 2010.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES ON THE RISE

Digital communication and computer technology were the dominant fields of technology at the EPO overall. These sectors posted the highest growth of all technology fields, with digital communication overtaking medical technology, which had been the most patent-active segment since 2006. With an increase of 65%, Chinese companies contributed most to the growth in digital communication patent applications, with U.S. (+15%) and South Korean firms (+36%) following suit. In terms of share, China, the U.S. and Europe each accounted for roughly a quarter of all patent applications filed with the EPO in 2019 in this field, with China pulling slightly ahead of the U.S. and Europe for the first time. The top applicants in the field in 2019 were Huawei, Ericsson and Qualcomm (Graph: Leading applicants, digital communication).

In computer technology, U.S. companies accounted for 38% of all patent application in that field and saw 14% growth over 2018. Applications from China (+19%) made up nearly 11%. The leading applicants in 2019 were Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Samsung, Huawei and Intel (Graph: Leading applicants, computer technology).

U.S. COMPANIES STRONGEST IN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY, PHARMACEUTICALS, COMPUTING

U.S. companies were particularly strong in medical technology, which remained the largest field for patent applications at the EPO from U.S. companies with a growth of 6.3%. U.S. firms accounted for 40% of all patent applications in this sector at the EPO in 2019. Other U.S. strongholds included pharmaceuticals with a 39% share, computer technology with a 38% share, and biotechnology with 32% of all patent applications at the EPO in that field.

The strongest growth among the 15 most important U.S. technology fields was recorded in transport, which includes the automotive and aeronautics sectors, where patent applications from U.S. companies at the EPO grew by 17%.

UNITED TECHNOLOGIES NO. 1 U.S. PATENT APPLICANT

For the second year in a row, United Technologies was the most active U.S. patent applicant at the EPO with 2,813 patent applications, again followed by Qualcomm (1,668 applications) and General Electric (1,247). Rounding out the top five were Alphabet (1,196) and Microsoft (1,112), which moved up to fourth and fifth position (Graph: Top U.S. applicants at the EPO in 2019).

HUAWEI HEADS THE LIST OF APPLICANTS

Huawei topped the table of patent applicants at the EPO in 2019 with 3,524 applications, almost two thirds of which were filed in digital communication. Samsung moved up to second place and LG gained a position to take third. The two South Korean firms were followed by United Technologies and the top applicant of 2018, Siemens, which dropped to fifth place. Qualcomm ranked as the sixth-largest patent applicant (Graph: Top ten applicants at the EPO in 2019).

For detailed statistics, see the EPO Patent Index 2019 at http://www.epo.org/patent-index2019
