Bravrr Launches Novel Assessment Tool for Bruxism Disorders

More than 90% of bruxism patients go undiagnosed

Bravrr, a company dedicated to providing wearable diagnostic and digital therapeutic technologies to clinicians and patients, has launched BruxRelief, an innovative assessment tool for bruxism disorders.

The BruxRelief system is a wearable headband incorporating patent-pending sensors that connect with an app on a dental patient’s smartphone. These sensors detect the activity of the temporalis muscle caused by the clenching and grinding behaviors associated with bruxism. “More than 90% of bruxism patients go undiagnosed,” said Brock Predovich, CEO and founder of Bravrr. “Bruxism can lead to deterioration of the dentition, TMJ dysfunction, migraines, vertigo, tinnitus, and localized pain in the neck, jaw, or teeth.”

“The way in which bruxism is currently diagnosed is less than ideal. Rather than being able to intervene early, dentists must wait to observe wear on a patient’s teeth. At this point, the damage is already done,” said Dr. Chris Salierno. In his role as Chief Development Officer for Cellerant Consulting Group, Dr. Salierno has advised Bravrr on the clinical development of the BruxRelief system from early stages to launch.

A typical BruxRelief assessment involves the patient wearing the headband for three nights in the comfort of their own home. The data is recorded to the smartphone app providing both the patient and clinician with a clear picture of the frequency and duration of unconscious temporalis muscle contractions associated with bruxism behavior.

“Patients rarely acknowledge that they have a bruxism disorder as they are not acutely aware of their clenching/grinding behavior,” added Dr. Salierno. “BruxRelief provides the dentist with objective data to demonstrate to the patient the presence of a parafunctional condition. Having this data makes it easier for the patient to accept the need for a nightguard appliance to minimize further damage caused by bruxism.”

Future iterations of the device will seek to include a biofeedback mechanism. Mr. Predovich adds, “the cognitive-behavioral training and muscle reeducation possible with a biofeedback loop can play a huge role in reducing or even eliminating the pain associated with this undesired behavior. While assessment is the first step, Bravrr embraces the opportunity to help patients better control their parafunctional habits, leading to an improved quality of life.”
