Rocky Mountain Institute Report Shows Massive Investment in Battery Technology is Accelerating the Energy Transition, Driving Exponential Market Growth

We can now say with confidence that the age of affordable battery technology is coming, and it’s happening faster than anyone expected.

Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) today announced the release of its Breakthrough Battery Technologies report, which shows that exploding investment in battery technologies is revolutionizing the sector much faster than expected and setting in motion a seismic shift in how we will power our lives and organize energy systems as early as 2030.

With funding pouring into battery technology companies—over $1.4 billion in the first half of 2019 alone—RMI found that the reality of a future energy system rich in renewables and electric vehicles (EVs) is closer than ever. The report also highlights the growing threat of stranded assets in natural gas and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle markets, and an opportunity for the United States to become a global leader in the battery industry by constructively aligning efforts from the public and private sectors to support technology growth.

Throughout the report, RMI investigates new markets and applications and the potential for commercialization of battery chemistries beyond Lithium-ion. This diversification of battery technology has been made possible by robust private investment; governmental support of research and development; national-, city- and state-level electric mobility and renewable energy targets and growing adoption of EVs.

“We can now say with confidence that the age of affordable battery technology is coming, and it’s happening faster than anyone expected,” said Madeline Tyson, senior associate at RMI and lead author of the report. “We’re incredibly excited about what this accelerating pace of change means as we fight the climate crisis. Advanced battery technologies have the power to outcompete many fossil-fueled energy systems in the near term and can help us meet ambitious carbon reduction goals on or ahead of schedule.”

Key takeaways include:

● Battery cost and performance improvements are quickly outpacing forecasts: Increasing demand for EVs, grid-tied storage, and other emerging applications are further fueling the cycle of investment and cost declines in batteries and setting the stage for mass adoption. Total manufacturing investment, both previous and planned until 2023, represents around $150 billion dollars, and analysts expect the capital cost for new planned battery-manufacturing capacity to drop by more than half from 2018 to 2023.

● These improvements spell trouble for natural gas and internal combustion engine vehicle markets: As batteries become cheaper and make renewables-plus-storage more competitive, legacy energy infrastructure will struggle to keep up. RMI finds that new—and soon, existing—natural gas plants are likely to be out-competed by clean energy portfolios as early as 2021, leading to a much greater risk of stranded assets. This mirrors a similar risk for traditional ICE vehicles.

● Lithium-ion, while still the leading battery technology, is likely not the universal solution of future energy storage technologies: Other technologies that are better suited for applications like long-duration energy storage, heavy trucking, aviation and EV fast-charging infrastructure will increasingly drive these emerging battery markets. Savvy companies, governments and investors should explore and support these alternative battery technologies—not just Lithium-ion—to accelerate and scale climate-critical solutions.

RMI’s Breakthrough Battery Technologies report makes evident that the United States, in particular, has an opportunity to either become a leader in battery technologies beyond Lithium-ion, or risk ceding ground to China and other major players globally. In order to avoid replaying the evolution of the solar photovoltaic market—in which China made significant investment early in the game in order to become a dominant world superpower—the United States must prioritize investment and policies conducive to success now, or risk being pushed out of the market.

“It’s crucial that the investor, policymaker and regulatory ecosystem stay ahead of the curve on battery cost and technology developments in order to fully capture the enormous environmental and economic opportunities to be had,” said Charlie Bloch, principal at RMI and coauthor of the report. “Climate progress can be supercharged if these groups stay aligned with each decision they make.”

The RMI report outlines several key opportunities for a wide range of industry stakeholders to support a holistic approach to the battery-driven energy transformation. For example, national governments should find ways to incentivize component manufacturing, continued research and development, and battery deployment; manufacturers should work to improve the technology in ways that can reduce cost and reveal new use cases; and investors should consider diversifying their portfolios across promising near-term technologies as well as precommercial battery technologies, even if risks and investment timelines don’t perfectly align with typical venture capital criteria.

By working in alignment to support breakthrough battery technology success, energy industry stakeholders have an opportunity to hasten, not hamper, the rapid and economic transition to resilient, clean and affordable energy systems.

Newest Epidemic Leaves 35 Dead and Over 1500 Hospitalized

Steered Straight is a non-profit organization providing educational programs and materials to youth, families, and communities across the country and around the world

Michael DeLeon, Founder and CEO of Steered Straight, is on a mission to help kids avoid vaping and other drugs.

“We are in the worst public social health crisis America has ever seen. With vaping/JUULing and a culture that literally grew up with pills marketed as the solution for every human ailment, the threat to our youth is greater than ever.”

Vaping has become a cross-country epidemic, with over 1,500 reported counts of vape-related illnesses and 34 vape-induced deaths [1]. The cruel tragedy of this epidemic is that most of the victims of vaping related illnesses involve young adults around age 23 and most of the vaping related deaths are adults around age 45–but most of the long-term illnesses and death will manifest in children under 18 years old. In a recent federal survey, researchers found that more than 25 percent of U.S. high school students have used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days [2]. Michael DeLeon, the number one booked school speaker on drug related issues and Founder/President of Steered Straight, has surveyed more than 15,000 middle and high school students already this school year and has found that number is more than double.

When companies like Juul began marketing to pre-adolescents and teens with misleading messages pertaining to the safety of vaping, dependency and ingredients, their revenue spiked and sent the CDC, parents and teachers into a panic. “These companies are marketing these products to children and it’s absolutely unacceptable. We need to speak up and put an end to this dangerous fad,” said DeLeon.

Unfortunately, the anti-tobacco and anti-smoking awareness efforts are far less abundant than e-cigs and tobacco campaigns. In an effort to stop the vaping giant Juul from marketing to children, the Center for Environmental Health recently released a legally binding agreement preventing Juul from:

  • Advertising at sporting events or concerts that allow people under the age 21.
  • Appearing at schools.
  • Using models in their ads that are under the age of 28 [3].

Although these are promising steps in the right direction, a new product, Snus, was recently cleared by the FDA to be marketed with the verbiage “instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis [4].” Could this be the second wave of the youth smoking epidemic?

DeLeon believes so. “However people want to look at SNUS—either as an alternative to smoking or as an origination to nicotine use–it’s still carcinogenic to humans. My main focus is on helping kids and young adults steer clear of nicotine. The more we paint a reduced perception of harm, the more we increase adolescent use of these products.”

The FDA wants to make a clear distinction that the modified risk claim was approved–snus are not FDA approved. But DeLeon said the distinction may get lost in the advertising copy.

“I saw the vaping epidemic happen years before it did—and snus could be the next big thing with this modified messaging. We need to educate kids now before any more deaths happen in this country from nicotine,” said DeLeon.

In addition to snus, the bans on e-cigarette flavors in various states across the country and done voluntarily to some extent by the industry leader, JUUL, will not help stem youth use. In fact, it will increase faster than ever. There are countless companies marketing and selling counterfeit flavors all over this country and online. There is a complete industry selling flavors separately which won’t fall under bans. There is a burgeoning black market that is stepping up faster than ever since the scattered bans. The worst increase of availability will come from the marijuana industry. This is a huge market that is not regulated at all by our federal government.

DeLeon delivers a hard-hitting educational program, “Vaping Me Crazy,” to youth, families, and communities across the country. Currently, Michael and his team are focusing his awareness efforts on educating parents and teachers.

“We are in the worst public social health crisis America has ever seen,” DeLeon notes. “With vaping/JUULing and a culture that literally grew up with pills marketed as the solution for every human ailment, the threat to our youth is greater than ever.”

About Michael DeLeon

Michael DeLeon has become the #1 School Presenter in America, visiting 616 schools to date in 40 states in 2018 alone. Michael is the leading subject matter expert on vaping and current youth drug trends. He is the Founder and CEO of Steered Straight, a non-profit organization providing educational programs and materials to youth, families, and communities across the country and around the world. He is a thought leader in the addiction and substance abuse community and is an advocate for social and public health change, parent/teacher education, and is spearheading multiple anti-vape campaigns and awareness programs.

“I am excited to speak at the upcoming Global Women in STEM Leadership Summit in Atlanta, November 4-5, 2019. When female entrepreneurs gather together we have the insight, the technical know-how and the support to increase the opportunities for women in EdTech!” Sucheta Kamath, Founder, ExQ®

Leading the way for female technology representation in education, Sucheta Kamath, Founder and CEO, has launched a new cloud based personalized training curriculum, ExQ®, designed to empower educators to teach Executive Function skills. Based on 20+ years hands on experience teaching students and partnering with schools, Sucheta knew it was important to start with the goal of providing teachers, our most important learning partners, with innovative technology that was designed with their needs at the center. Intuitive user flows, real time data and insights, online gaming, virtual coaches, and personalized secure content, ExQ technology was developed to empower and encourage teaching students critically important Executive Function skills.

“Our traditional educational systems lack tools and curriculum to train educators to teach students directly about how their brain works. Executive Function skills collectively influence academic outcomes, but they have not been a part of academic curriculum nor professional teacher development. It is important to teach processes by which students can redirect their attention when they’re distracted, use effective memory skills when they know content is difficult, parse information by sorting and regrouping it so that they can express themselves effectively. That’s why I created ExQ,” shares Sucheta Kamath. “I’m excited to empower our teachers with technology to build Executive Function focused classroom cultures which will allow students to identify and speak about their own strengths and challenges in learning. This kind of individualized experience can have a positive impact on their self-awareness and self-management to achieve their goals not only in school, but also in life!”

“Because education has long been a highly gendered profession dominated by women, it follows that women founders in EdTech are more common than in the Tech space overall. However, despite the higher number of female leaders in the EdTech space, female innovators ultimately face the same challenges that all women in technology face,” says Sucheta Kamath. “As a member of Global Women in STEM Leadership, I am excited to network, collaborate and share with other dynamic female EdTech leaders, thinkers and innovators as a speaker at the upcoming Global Women in STEM Leadership Summit in Atlanta, November 4-5, 2019. When female entrepreneurs gather together we have the insight, the technical know-how and the support to increase the opportunities for women in EdTech to promote creativity and positive change in our world!”

About ExQ®: Rooted in more than 20 years of cognitive neuroscience and Executive Function training expertise, ExQ® is a cloud-based patented system designed to enhance the brain’s Executive Function through personalized game-based training that focuses on teaching students to learn how to learn.
