New Study Finds that PowerMyLearning’s SEL Program Accelerates Math and Reading Outcomes and Improves Student Behavior

[ad_1]

News Image

“The results of our work with PowerMyLearning far exceeded our expectations,” said Meadows Principal Magdalena Moore.

PowerMyLearning, a K-12 nonprofit that unlocks the power of collaboration among families, teachers, and students, today shared research results from their “Nurture Student Growth Through Social Emotional Learning (SEL)” program at Jeanne R. Meadows Elementary School (“Meadows”). The research shows that integrating SEL practices into academic instruction can accelerate reading and math outcomes and improve student behavior and SEL skills like self-efficacy.

At the start of the 2021-22 school year, the leadership and staff at Meadows, a Title I school that is part of the Franklin-McKinley School District in San Jose, Calif., were acutely aware of the impact of the pandemic, the economic downturn, as well as political and racial unrest on student learning and mental health.

After a year of remote instruction, Meadows leadership sought an evidence-based approach that addressed three focus areas:

  • Build teacher capacity to support students’ academic and social-emotional needs.
  • Improve students’ behavior and SEL skills.
  • Strengthen relationships with families.

PowerMyLearning partnered with Meadows to implement an SEL intervention that included professional development workshops and small-group coaching sessions for teachers as well as workshops for families focused on supporting their own and their children’s well-being.

With PowerMyLearning’s support, Meadows effectively addressed all three focus areas and accelerated reading and math outcomes. An impact study showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the proportion of students who exceeded or met district benchmarks before and after the SEL program for Star Reading (+13%; <.001) and Star Math (+ 7%; p=.03).

The program also:

  • Built teacher capacity: Thanks to bite-sized, flexible professional development, teachers became significantly more confident in supporting students’ SEL competencies, including self-efficacy (+11%; <.10), sense of belonging (+10%; <.10), and sense of safety (+11%; p=.08).
  • Improved students’ behavior and SEL skills: By embedding SEL into the curriculum, students became better equipped to manage their emotions and developed key skills to support their learning. Students had significantly better self-efficacy (+12%; <.10) and self-management (+7%; p=.08) after the program.
  • Strengthened relationships with families: Meadows successfully strengthened relationships between students, teachers, and families. The SEL program significantly improved teacher-family relationships (+13%; <.01) and school climate (+7%; p=.03).

“The results of our work with PowerMyLearning far exceeded our expectations,” said Meadows Principal Magdalena Moore. “We received workshops on trauma-based practices, transforming discipline into learning opportunities, and mindfulness. These topics were right in line with what we needed to come back from a year of distance learning in a way that got kids connected again. As the study shows, rebuilding our community created a climate in which our students felt empowered to achieve academically.”

“We’re excited to see these outcomes, given the enormous need for learning recovery and SEL support across the country,” said PowerMyLearning CEO and Co-Founder Elisabeth Stock. “Our program helped teachers incorporate SEL into their instruction so that it didn’t feel like ‘one more thing,’ and so students’ SEL gains could directly benefit their learning recovery. We congratulate the Meadows community on their success.”

Funding for the implementation of PowerMyLearning’s SEL program in Meadows was provided by the Lowenstein Foundation. Access the full case study to learn more.

Davis Estates Dedicates 2020 Chardonnay to Local Firefighters and First Responders

[ad_1]

Davis Estates 2020 Thank You First Responders Chardonnay

Davis Estates would likely not be standing without the life-saving work of the brave first responders who fought hard to save our property two years ago. Not only is this wine delicious, but it also allows us to give back to these local heroes in a big way as a small token of our appreciation.

Davis Estates has dedicated their 2020 First Responders Chardonnay to the brave firefighters who fought to save their winery and so many others two years ago during the 2020 Glass Fire in Napa Valley. Appropriately dubbed the ‘Thank You First Responders Chardonnay,’ this wine will benefit local heroes, with 50% of the proceeds going directly to Napa Valley firehouses.

Davis Estates was directly impacted by the 2020 wildfire season that devastated areas of Napa Valley. Due to the round-the-clock work of the brave firefighters and first responders and Davis Estates’ commitment to wildfire preparation, the winery ultimately survived the Glass Fire with their tasting room and many of their vineyards intact.

While Davis Estates has always upheld giving back as a key mission statement, their proximity to this disaster and the local heroes who fought, and continue to fight, for their community made dedicating this wine to the cause a natural choice for Davis Estates’ founder and owner, Mike Davis.

“We know that Davis Estates would likely not still be standing without the life-saving work of the brave first responders in the Napa Valley who fought hard to save our property two years ago,” shares Mike Davis. “Not only is this wine delicious, but it also allows us to give back to these local heroes in a big way as a small token of our appreciation.”

The 2020 First Responders Chardonnay took the place of the Davis Estates Chardonnay for this vintage. While the wine is similar to the regularly released Chardonnay that Davis Estates fans know and love, because of winemaking conditions during the fires, the 2020 First Responders Chardonnay saw no new oak and had to be finished in stainless steel tanks, giving it a crisper and refreshing flavor profile.

The philanthropic wine is available for purchase directly through the Davis Estates website and makes the perfect addition to a holiday meal or as a gift. The Davis Estates portfolio includes Davis Estates and Phase V Labels. For more information on Davis Estates, visit http://www.davisestates.com and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

About Davis Estates:

Davis Estates is a family-owned and operated estate winery located in the northern region of Napa Valley, crafting exceptional wines known for their nuance, complexity, and elegance. Best-known for terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignons, Davis Estates also produces exceptional Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and special Bordeaux blends, along with single varietals of everything grown on the estate. The picturesque winery property covers 155 acres, 11 of which are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot. The estate sweeps from the famous Silverado Trail on the valley floor up into the eastern hills, cresting at 1,100 feet. This change of elevation, exposure, and micro-climate, combined with a range of well-drained volcanic soils, creates an ideal place to grow their preeminent grapes.

Oral Reading, Listening and Reading Comprehension

[ad_1]

News Image

“By reporting all 3 measures, teachers can now get a realistic view of how their students are performing and use this ongoing data to help their students get to grade level reading.”

MetaMetrics® today announced a new partnership with Readable English, making it the first education product to report Lexile® measures for oral reading, listening and reading comprehension.

Readable English is a research based, reading intervention supported by the Science of Reading. Readable English makes English phonetic by adding a pronunciation guide into each word providing the scaffolding needed for orthographic mapping. Using the markup, students can access and read grade level content and academic vocabulary with confidence! Readable English is for readers who struggle, special education, and multilingual learners.

Readable English is the only company offering benchmarking and progress monitoring for all three reading measures for grades 2-12.

“We developed Readable English with a simple goal: to get students reading at grade level,” said Ann Fitts, founder and CEO. “By reporting all 3 measures, teachers can now get a realistic view of how their students are performing and use this ongoing data to help their students get to grade level reading.”

This new partnership illustrates the growing interest from the education industry in MetaMetrics’ family of Lexile measures spanning the literacy construct.

Developed more than 30 years ago, the Lexile Framework for Reading measures a student’s reading comprehension ability and the text complexity, placing both the student and instructional material on the same scale to match the learner with reading materials at their level. In the past several years, MetaMetrics® expanded the power of the Lexile scale across the literacy spectrum, developing the Lexile Framework for Oral Reading and the Lexile Framework for Listening.

The Lexile Framework for Listening measures both the listening comprehension ability of students and audio complexity of resources so students can be matched to ability-appropriate audio materials.

The Lexile Framework for Oral Reading is a scientific approach to measuring both students’ oral reading ability and the oral readability of text on the same scale. For decades, student oral reading ability has been measured using Words Correct Per Minute (WCPM). The Lexile Framework for Oral Reading builds upon WCPM to take into account the difficulty of the passage a student is reading. Lexile oral reading measures provide a more accurate measure and a way to measure growth in oral reading.

“We expanded our literacy frameworks, recognizing that strong literacy skills are built on the foundation of oral reading fluency, listening and reading comprehension abilities,” said Malbert Smith, MetaMetrics CEO and co-founder. “We look forward to collaborating with Ann and her team as they pioneer reporting all three of our Lexile measures from their innovative program.”

About Readable English

Readable English, LLC brings an innovative suite of science-based products and services to the struggle against illiteracy, a condition that diminishes the lives of some 800 million people worldwide. This number includes two-thirds of our nation’s K-12 students who are reading “below-proficiency,” a situation that has shown no improvement for nearly 30 years. With patented technology, coaching, and professional development services, Readable English helps schools and districts boost measured reading proficiency by offering a cutting-edge solution to the underlying causes of reading failure. The mission of this fast-growing company is to accelerate reading proficiency and combat the deeply damaging effects of illiteracy, so students attain happier, healthier lives that are more productive, fulfilling and rewarding. Silverlon Receives FDA 510k Clearance for Radiation Dermatitis and Cutaneous Radiation Injury

[ad_1]

Silverlon® wound dressings have a permanently plated metallic surface, which provides the antimicrobial benefits of silver in the dressing without staining the skin and without increasing bioburden.

This historic achievement is the culmination of more than 20 years of effort, thousands of hours of work and significant investment by our government. We are proud to provide an FDA-cleared product for the management of these injuries and further assist with disaster preparedness for our country.

Argentum Medical, a medical device leader and pioneer of silver-plated dressing technology, announced that it received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Radiation Dermatitis (RD) and Cutaneous Radiation Injury (CRI) through dry desquamation for its Silverlon® Burn and Wound Care products.

Silverlon is the first medical device to be cleared in the U.S. for management of Cutaneous Radiation Injury through dry desquamation.

“This historic achievement is the culmination of more than 20 years of effort, thousands of hours of work and significant investment by our government. We are proud to provide an FDA-cleared product for the management of these injuries and further assist with disaster preparedness for our country,” states Raul Brizuela, CEO of Argentum Medical.

The key to determining the effectiveness of Silverlon for management of radiological injuries was an $11.6 million development contract awarded to Argentum Medical by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR).

Peter Antinozzi, Ph.D., Argentum Medical’s Project Manager of the BARDA funded project, credits the resolute efforts of the interdisciplinary project team of industry, government, and academic experts for this achievement. “In the past three years, our highly productive private-public partnership between Argentum Medical and BARDA has yielded two critical FDA clearances to support a joint goal of disaster preparedness against chemical and radiological threats. The experimental approaches to support these clearances were innovative and state-of-the art and involved the development of novel methods and models.”

In 2019, Silverlon received the first FDA clearance for mustard-induced vesicant injuries, which established Silverlon as a safe treatment for chemical warfare injuries such as vapor sulfur mustard burns. Now, in 2022, Silverlon has received the first FDA medical device clearance for both radiation dermatitis and cutaneous radiation injuries. This is truly a unique clearance, a dual-role clearance, which has immediate medical treatment benefits to manage radiation dermatitis, a common side-effect of radiation therapy for cancer treatment, and establishes Silverlon as a safe and effective product to manage cutaneous radiation injuries resulting from accidental or intentional radiation incidents.

“Silverlon technology is highly effective relative to other products on the market because of its ability to stretch and conform across a bodily area, resulting in more exposure to and longer duration on a wounded area,” adds Raul Brizuela. “Rather than rely on a wound dressing that needs to be changed every few hours, Silverlon can be used for much longer periods of time, reducing the need for rapid resupply. The clinical trial data (NCT04238728, clinicaltrials.gov) that supports this novel clearance demonstrated the feasibility, patient compliance, and safety of Silverlon use to manage radiation-induced injuries such as radiation dermatitis.”

Silverlon has received FDA clearances for multiple indications since 2003.

Silverlon’s Military Heritage

Developed for combat injuries, Silverlon antimicrobial technology is used throughout the U.S. Military for the management of burn and blast injuries. Silverlon products contain 50 to 100 times more metallic silver ions than silver-impregnated dressings and have been shown to be highly effective in hostile and austere military environments.

Silverlon is incorporated into numerous deployed Medical Tactical Combat Casualty Care kits and is also supplied in bulk to Combat and Support Hospitals and Tactical Forward Surgical Teams. The wound dressing is also included in burn care protocols in the Joint Theater Trauma System Clinical Practice Guideline.

Silverlon burn products and protocols are extensively used by the U.S. Army and by U.S. Air Force Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) teams and are taught at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine Critical Care Air Transport Basic Course.

Beyond the military, Silverlon dressings are used today by surgeons and other healthcare professionals around the world on surgical wounds, in negative pressure wound therapy, on chronic wounds, burns, skin grafts, and IV and catheter-related wounds.

Argentum Medical continues to explore new applications and markets for its Silverlon technology in keeping with its corporate mission to improve clinical outcomes. For more about Silverlon, visit http://www.silverlon.com.

The development of Silverlon for use on mustard-induced vesicant injuries, radiation dermatitis and cutaneous radiation injuries has been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from BARDA under contract numbers HHSO100201300019C and HHSO1002018000022C.

About Silverlon

Silverlon® wound dressings have a permanently plated metallic surface, which provides the antimicrobial benefits of silver in the dressing without staining the skin and without increasing bioburden. Silverlon was originally developed for the U.S. military, where it is still extensively used for management of burn and blast injuries. Memorial Hospital Pembroke achieves reaccreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program®

[ad_1]

Memorial Hospital Pembroke

“We are honored that our bariatric center has been reaccredited because it gives patients peace of mind that their care is being managed with the highest standards of surgical care for weight-loss and other metabolic issues,” said Stephen Demers, CEO, Memorial Hospital Pembroke.

When it comes to patients seeking surgical treatment for weight-loss and other metabolic conditions, healthcare experts recommend finding a nationally accredited bariatric center that meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality. South Florida patients don’t need to go far as Memorial Hospital Pembroke recently received reaccreditation for this service by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Alongside Memorial Hospital Pembroke, there are two other bariatric centers part of Memorial Healthcare System that also hold this accreditation – one at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood and another at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines – all three bariatric centers raising the standards of care high for the benefit of patients.

“We are honored that our bariatric center has been reaccredited because it gives patients peace of mind that their care is being managed with the highest standards of surgical care for weight-loss and other metabolic issues,” said Stephen Demers, CEO, Memorial Hospital Pembroke.

The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, ensure that metabolic and bariatric patients receive multidisciplinary medical care, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. MBSAQIP-Accredited centers offer preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for patients with obesity.

Memorial Hospital Pembroke’s reaccreditation comes with a commitment to quality care that begins with expertly trained staff and the leadership of an experienced bariatric surgeon, who is Dr. Brett Cohen, Chief, Adult General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery Program. The rest of the bariatric surgical team include Dr. Jeremy Gallego Eckstein, Associate Medical Director, Bariatric Surgery; Dr. Joseph Melendez-Davidson, general and bariatric surgeon; Dr. Emil Matei, board certified general surgeon and medical director, Bariatric Program, Memorial Hospital West. The program at Memorial Hospital Pembroke and the other facilities is tasked with continuous review of surgical data as they continue improving the structure and outcomes expertise necessary to provide safe, efficacious, and high-quality care to all metabolic and bariatric patients.

To earn MBSAQIP Accreditation, Memorial Hospital Pembroke met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure, and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement. The MBSAQIP Standards, Optimal Resources for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, are published by the ACS and the ASMBS.

After applying for MBSAQIP Accreditation, centers undergo an extensive site visit by an experienced bariatric surgeon who reviews the center’s structure, processes, and clinical outcomes data. Centers that earn accreditation are awarded a specific designation level, depending on how many patients it serves annually, critical care capabilities, the types of procedures provided, and whether it provides care to patients under the age of 18.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 93 million adults in the United States are affected by obesity and that number continues to increase. The disease of obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgery has proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to obesity.* Working together, the ACS and the ASMBS have developed accreditation standards for metabolic and bariatric surgery to assist patients with obesity in identifying centers that provide optimal patient care.
