Mercaptor Introduces Powerful CAPTON™️ Platform for Precision Neurology

New Technology Addresses Brain Trauma Including Alzheimer’s, TBI, and Epilepsy

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Mercaptor Inc, a privately held pharmaceutical company, today announced a breakthrough platform for the CNS. The pivotal technology overcomes challenges that have limited the development of meaningful treatments for the brain. The chemistry improves distribution, proportionates drug activity based on pathology in situ, and limits drug exposure to those areas of the brain suffering pathogenic stress. The unique chemistry behind the approach involves substituting an essential sulfonate group on suitably-configured drugs with an activity-disqualifying thiol, yielding a small molecular therapeutic, termed Capton. Structure-Activity Relationship (SAR) is sufficiently understood for the development of a broad class of therapeutics targeting key disease mechanisms. Mercaptor’s CNS CAPTON platform promises to meaningfully impact the treatment of brain disease and damage worldwide.

Patients suffering from neurodegeneration, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease, as well as those subjected to brain trauma, including epilepsy, stroke, and TBI, have had little recourse to therapeutic intervention. These largely unaddressed conditions share complex etiologies and limited pharmacological accessibility. Mercaptor recognizes the need for potent, precisely-regulated, therapeutics in the clinic. A discovery by Mercaptor’s team led to a new class of prodrugs, Captons, which are effectuated by sulfur-redox chemistry catalyzed by physiologically relevant transition metal ions. Such chemistry can be readily detected in the body, but only in areas of the CNS suffering from a variety of insults, including neurodegeneration and trauma.

Studies by Mercaptor’s scientists have demonstrated that these prodrugs, administered orally, become active only in the CNS, specifically in those areas where unchaperoned redox-active metal ions and ROS have reached pathogenic levels. Both species are strongly associated with most neuropathological conditions. Redox chemistry of this variety is a unique feature of the interstitium of the brain, where levels of albumin are a fraction of those found everywhere else in the body.

Building on knowledge gathered by countless researchers over many decades in the fields of sulfur chemistry and oxidative stress biology, Mercaptor’s CAPTON platform provides the means to practice precision neurology with exquisite control over the location and dose of a variety of therapeutics. Our candidate pool consists of well-documented therapeutics acting locally to enhance GABA and taurine activity or to engage P2Y12R, AGTR1, CD40L, SHP2, PIK3CB, VGLUT, ACP1 and the S1P receptors.

“Working with this platform has been the experience of a lifetime for us. It is the sort of technological leap forward that can change how therapies for the CNS are conceived and developed,” said Dr. Todd Zankel, Chief Scientific Officer of Mercaptor. “The recent advent of AI will provide another boost to such efforts. Given the defined SAR behind our approach, we expect that AI will allow a more thorough and efficient exploration of chemical space, accelerating the identification of promising drug candidates and streamlining the development process.”

“We are driven by a commitment to advance the field of neurodegenerative disease and deliver breakthrough therapies,” said Sara Isbell, CEO of Mercaptor. “Our CAPTON platform represents a revolutionary stride in shaping disease-modifying therapies for neurology. From combating brain degeneration to shielding against the perils of cosmic radiation during extended space travel, its applications span an astonishing breadth. The sheer versatility of CAPTON technology, from therapeutics to space exploration, underscores the remarkable and unexpected potential this innovation brings to the forefront.”

Through strategic partnerships with leading research organizations and industry leaders, Mercaptor aims to accelerate the development and commercialization of its groundbreaking CAPTON technology.

Martin Searle Solicitors launch their new campaign “Menopause Matters” in January 2024 to stamp out Menopause Discrimination in the Workplace

Although the menopause is not specifically identified as a type of discrimination under the Equality Act, the Employment Law Team at Martin Searle Solicitors are seeing a number of employees with menopausal symptoms experiencing disability discrimination, age discrimination and / or sex discrimination at work.

Many workplaces do not adequately support their staff who are going through the menopause. A 2022 report by the Fawcett Society reported that 80% of women said that their employer did not have a menopause policy in place or offered any training to staff around the menopause. Sadly, one in ten menopausal women have left their job due to their symptoms.

Fiona Martin, Director and Head of Employment Law at Martin Searle Solicitors, said “We have spoken to many employees who believe they have been unfairly selected for redundancy or discriminated against because they are going through the menopause. We are a campaigning law firm who educate employers to be supportive and to follow best practice on this issue. We also support employees who are being discriminated against. We want to make menopause discrimination a thing of the past and encourage employers to be aware of the issues and to make reasonable adjustments where necessary.”

Their campaign includes a free virtual seminar for employee advisers and trade union representatives on Menopause Discrimination At Work on Thursday 25 January 2024, and a virtual seminar for charities and non-profit organisations on Menopause Discrimination – Best Practice for Employers on Tuesday 30 January 2024. They are also providing a free menopause policy for organisations.

Martin Searle Solicitors Employment Law Team are also providing a free 30 minute confidential advice line for employers, employees and workers on the rights of staff going through the menopause and employer duties to support employees and workers. Employers, employees and workers can call 01273 609911 from 3.30pm – 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January 2024.

Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) Grant Recipients Participate in Groundbreaking Stanford Study on Ibogaine Treatment for PTSD and TBI

First-ever study of ibogaine treatment for TBI reveals reduced symptoms and improved functioning

CORONADO, Calif., Jan. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to ending veteran suicide, shares the findings of a new groundbreaking study that it supported alongside Stanford University. The study, published today in Nature Medicine, is the first-of-its-kind observational study that captured the effects of ibogaine, the plant-based psychoactive drug, on veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and the debilitating consequences, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The study demonstrated that prior to ibogaine treatment, participants scored an average of 30.2 on the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0, equivalent to mild to moderate disability. At one month following ibogaine treatment, the average rating improved to 5.1, equivalent to no disability. The researchers also found a statistically significant reduction in suicidal ideation from participants, decreasing from 47% to 7% one month following treatment. The participants experienced no serious side effects or heart complications resulting from the ibogaine treatment.

The paper, authored by Dr. Nolan Williams, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Director of the Brain Stimulation Lab at Stanford University, indicates that ibogaine, combined with a cardioprotective agent, effectively treated TBI in Special Operations veterans. Researchers enrolled 30 U.S. Special Operations veterans in the study, all of whom had received Foundational Healing Grants from VETS for travel support and ibogaine therapy. The study revealed that ibogaine therapy significantly reduced PTSD, anxiety, depression, and improved cognitive function in veterans with TBI.

“Veterans are on the front line of our national defense, but here they are on the front line of cutting-edge research that has the potential to help millions of people – both in and out of uniform,” said Amber Capone, Co-Founder and CEO of VETS. “We remain laser-focused and dedicated to our mission of supporting access to psychedelic-assisted therapies for veterans and advancing research into their safety and efficacy. Our collaboration with Stanford University and Dr. Williams is a major step forward in proving the potential of ibogaine for treating PTSD and TBI.”

Since its inception in 2019, VETS has been at the forefront of combating veteran suicide by providing resources, research, and advocacy efforts for veterans and veteran spouses seeking psychedelic-assisted therapies for PTSD, TBI, and other mental health conditions. The 30 participants selected had a history of TBI and repeated blast exposures and were experiencing clinically severe psychiatric and cognitive impairments before seeking support from VETS. The participants had significantly improved, both psychiatrically and cognitively, persisting at least one month after treatment, the endpoint of the study.

“I went from being constantly angry and feeling alone, burdened by the trauma of war and the loss of 12 friends to suicide, to finding a renewed sense of hope and peace,” said Patrick Flatley, a U.S. Army Green Beret veteran and study participant. “The turning point was ibogaine treatment. Today, I am grateful to sleep well, live without daily fight or flight reactions, and look forward to life with newfound hope.”

“This reinforces what we’ve learned through thousands of treatments, that ibogaine can be safe and effective when provided in the right context. For Ambio, the study further highlights the remarkable healing potential of ibogaine, which we’re confident will expand the treatment landscape for veterans and many others,” said Jonathan Dickinson, Ambio’s CEO.

All participants in the study received treatment at Ambio Life Sciences, an independent clinic in Mexico that provides somatic therapies alongside psychedelic therapies in a medically supported environment. VETS provided travel funding for the study participants as part of its Foundational Healing Grants program, along with classes, coaching, integration support, and more. VETS does not provide psychedelic-assisted therapy.

About VETS

Founded in 2019, Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to end the veteran suicide epidemic by providing resources, research, and advocacy for U.S. military veterans seeking psychedelic-assisted therapies for traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, and other health conditions. VETS envisions a world where our veterans have access to the most advanced healthcare options to heal from the mental and physical wounds of war.

Mercy’s Susan T. Peeler, M.D., and Patricia McMullen, WHNP, named Winners of inaugural Interprofessional Humanism in Healthcare Award

The AACN and the Gold Foundation jointly created this award, which marks a deepening of the two organizations’ 9-year collaboration to support nurses and their essential role in humanism in healthcare. The new award will be centered each year on a theme, which this year is “Innovations in Interprofessional Collaboration that Drive Humanism in Healthcare.”

“The nearly 3,000 square foot The Neil B. Rosenshein, M.D., Institute for Gynecologic Care at Annapolis was opened in 2019, marking the 25th anniversary of Mercy’s nationally recognized Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine. This acclaim is made evident by the quality of care delivered by highly skilled and dedicated clinicians like Dr. Peeler and Dr. McMullen. Both represent the Mercy tradition of offering patients the finest in doctors, nurses and staff to address their healthcare needs,” said Dwight D. Im, M.D., FACOG, Medical Director of Mercy’s Gynecologic Oncology Collaborative, and head of Mercy’s Neil B. Rosenshein, M.D., Institute for Gynecologic Care, The Gynecologic Oncology Center, and The National Institute of Robotic Surgery.

“A strong partnership between physicians and nurses is essential for humanistic care that supports patients at the highest level. We are delighted to join with AACN to ensure that this important collaboration is recognized and celebrated – and serves as an example for medical and nursing students to emulate in their future careers,” said Kathleen Reeves, MD, President and CEO of the Gold Foundation. “Through their ‘Collaborative Consultations,’ Drs. Peeler and McMullen have together created an invaluable resource for their patients.”

“Collaborative practice is critical to ensuring that patients receive the highest quality care and benefit from the unique expertise that each clinician brings to health care,” said Deborah Trautman, PhD, RN, FAAN, President and Chief Executive Officer of AACN. “Congratulations go to the inaugural winners of the new AACN-Gold award whose exemplary team-based practice serves as a model for infusing humanism into the patient care experience.”

Drs. Peeler and McMullen will be presented with the AACN-Gold Interprofessional Humanism in Healthcare Award at the 2024 Gold Humanism Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, the honorees will share their insights, which will be recorded and shared across the AACN and Gold Foundation communities.

Dr. Peeler has training and experience in minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures. Dr. Peeler offers convenient, in-office diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including colposcopy as well as hysteroscopy. In addition, recognizing the benefits of advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, Dr. Peeler sought additional training to become proficient in da Vinci robotic surgery.

Dr. Peeler’s journey into medicine was greatly influenced by her formative years. She cites her family as her inspiration.
“I was raised in a family of loving, caring, and exceptional human beings who were all teachers and lifelong learners. The practice of medicine has allowed me to carry on that family tradition,” she explained.

An advocate for interprofessional collaboration, Dr. Peeler has partnered with Dr. McMullen, along with numerous nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals, to advance women’s healthcare. Dr. Peeler’s guiding principles are simple: “I want to treat my patients as I want my family and loved ones to be treated. I am truly a proponent of paying it forward.”

Recognized by her peers and patients alike for her commitment to clinical excellence, Dr. Peeler was named a “Top Doctor” in Gynecology by What’s Up? Annapolis magazine as well as a “Favorite Doc” by readers of Chesapeake Family magazine. She also works in concert with Annapolis gynecologic oncologist Dr. Teresa Diaz-Montes, who provides care for advanced GYN disease including uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers.

Dr. McMullen has an extensive and robust academic and clinical background. She obtained her BSN and MS degrees at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and then went on to complete a Juris Doctor at the University of Baltimore School of Law. She earned her PhD in nursing from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as the Dean of The Catholic University of America School of Nursing.

Dr. McMullen believes that there is great power in living a life of service to others. “It is so exciting to see the positive impact we have on the lives of women and their families. A hug from a patient, a simple thanks from a family member, kudos from colleagues are incomparable,” she said.

Both Drs. Peeler and McMullen are committed to the practice of what they term “Collaborative Consultation,” which embraces both medical and nursing approaches to create optimal patient care.

“Often, healthcare services offered to women are siloed. By engaging in interactions that include the women themselves and providers from a variety of disciplines, health outcomes are improved exponentially,” Dr. McMullen said.

The Institute for Gynecologic Care at Annapolis, located at 888 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401, opened in 2019 as an expansion of Mercy’s Gynecologic Oncology Collaborative, a statewide network providing patients with renowned gynecologic cancer care. The Collaborative addresses treatment for ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer at locations throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

AI-Driven Study Redefines Right Heart Health Assessment With Novel Predictive Model

In a milestone study, researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the assessment of the heart’s right ventricle, which sends blood to the lungs. Conducted by a team using AI-enabled electrocardiogram (AI-ECG) analysis, the research demonstrates that electrocardiograms can effectively predict right-side heart issues, offering a simpler alternative to complex imaging technologies and potentially enhancing patient outcomes. The findings were described in the December 29 online issue of Journal of the American Heart Association: https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.123.031671.

NEW YORK, Jan. 4, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Departure from traditional methods marks a significant advance in evaluating heart health, paving the way for more innovative tools and improved patient outcomes

The findings were described in the December 29 online issue of Journal of the American Heart Association:
https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.123.031671.

“We aimed to find a better way to assess the health of the heart’s right ventricle, focusing on its ability to pump blood and its size. Traditional methods fall short, which prompted us to explore AI-ECG analysis as a potential solution,” says co-first author Son Q. Duong MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (Pediatric Cardiology) at Icahn Mount Sinai. “This novel method could expedite the identification of heart problems, especially in the right ventricle, and potentially lead to earlier and more effective treatment. It holds particular importance for patients with congenital heart disease, who often face issues in the right ventricle.”

The study trained a deep-learning ECG (DL-ECG) model using harmonized data from 12-lead ECGs and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements. It was conducted on a large sample from the UK Biobank and validated at multiple health centers across the Mount Sinai Health System, measuring its accuracy in predicting heart conditions and its impact on patient survival rates.

“This innovative approach departs significantly from traditional methods. Unlike other studies, this research predicts something not easily quantifiable by other common tests, such as the heart ultrasound,” says co-first author Akhil Vaid, MD, Clinical Instructor of Medicine (Data-Driven and Digital Medicine) at Icahn Mount Sinai.

The investigators say that while the use of artificial intelligence allows for more precise heart information from commonly available tools, it’s in an early stage and doesn’t replace advanced diagnostics. Further work is needed to ensure the tool’s safety and correct applicability.

In addition, the study’s predictions may vary across populations, relying on existing ECG and MRI data with inherent limitations. Its application in everyday clinical practice requires further exploration, cautioned the researchers.

“Our findings mark a significant leap forward in right heart health assessment, offering a glimpse into a future where AI plays a pivotal role in early and accurate diagnosis. The study stands out for applying AI to standard ECG data, predicting right ventricular function and size numerically,” says senior author Girish Nadkarni, MD, MPH, Irene and Dr. Arthur M. Fishberg Professor of Medicine at Icahn Mount Sinai, Director of The Charles Bronfman Institute of Personalized Medicine, and System Chief of Data-Driven and Digital Medicine.

Future research plans include external validation of the DL-ECG models in diverse populations, ensuring broader applicability and confirming clinical usefulness in conditions like pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, and various forms of cardiomyopathy.

The paper is titled “Quantitative prediction of right ventricular size and function from the electrocardiogram.”

This study was supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (R01HL155915), and National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health (CTSA grant UL1TR004419).
