The COVID-19 pandemic has put the laboratory’s critical role in health care in the spotlight. The clinical laboratory is at the epicenter of revolutionary change sweeping across the entire healthcare field, and laboratories must be prepared to embrace these changes in order to survive and thrive.

That is the focus of the virtual 4th Annual Clinical Lab 2.0 Workshop that the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is co-sponsoring with Clinical Lab 2.0, Oct. 26-27. In light of this year’s pandemic, the workshop is being held online. An initiative of the Project Santa Fe Foundation (PSFF), Clinical Lab 2.0 is a business model that strives to ensure the clinical laboratory is prepared for the future, in light of the many changes taking place in health care.

“Health care is moving rapidly from a volume-based approach to a value-based approach, and these changes are coming into play very quickly because of technology and other innovations, along with changes in reimbursements, education, and the workforce shortfall,” said ASCP CEO E. Blair Holladay, PhD, MASCP, SCT(ASCP)CM.

The workshop will facilitate real-time, peer review dialogue on the Clinical Lab 2.0 model for COVID-19 response, its ability to create new norms to solve new problems, and its vital relationship to public and population health. The curriculum has been developed by Project Santa Fe Foundation, whose leaders hail from organizations that are driving the movement from test-volume to lab-value, including Northwell Health, Geisinger Health Systems, Henry Ford Health System, TriCore Reference Laboratories, Intermountain Healthcare, University of Vermont Medical Center, Mayo Clinical Laboratories, Kaiser Permanente and North Shore University Health System.
