“CHIP has driven positive health outcomes for tens of thousands of participants.”

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today announced the Redlands, California-based Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) as the first in the nation to earn its Certified Lifestyle Medicine Program designation. The new designation recognizes, supports and encourages adoption of evidence-based health intervention programs that meet rigorous review requirements and standards for offering lifestyle modification for chronic disease treatment and reversal.

The designation is offered at three different levels based upon evaluation scores—Honorable Mention, Certified and Gold Certified. The levels are based on factors including years in operation, number of participants, number of organizations using the program, inclusion of all Lifestyle Medicine pillars, intervention trials, duration of active treatment, amount of staff contact and follow-up, positive health metrics achieved and participant testimonials.

“CHIP is a powerful disease reversal tool that disrupts and curtails the rising chronic disease rates in a highly effective manner,” said ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM, DipABLM. “We congratulate the program as the first to earn this prestigious designation.”

The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) is a research-tested, intensive Lifestyle Medicine intervention solution designed to prevent, arrest and facilitate the reversal of many common chronic conditions. It is a community-based intervention program that uses behavioral change principles in a group or self-guided setting, education in an entertaining style and modern adult learning tools to help participants make fundamental lifestyle changes that are proven to lower or eliminate key risk factors within 10 to 12 weeks.

Founded in the United States in 1988, CHIP has driven positive health outcomes for tens of thousands of participants and generated 40-plus published scientific papers.

Participants in CHIP experience: a media presentation; a literature component that includes a text book, workbook, cookbook and activity instructional guide; diet that promotes use of a predominantly whole food, plant-based eating pattern; activity guide illuminating the benefits of regular physical activity; sleep guide to emotional and physical wellbeing; stress management education and practice; discussion of avoiding risky substances; and exploration of positive social connections.

“CHIP being the first to receive the Lifestyle Medicine Certified Program designation is gratifying and an honor,” said Jere Stocks, president of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute (LMI) that owns and operates the CHIP program. “Tens of thousands of lives have been touched by CHIP, empowering these individuals to protect their health and fight disease through the power of their daily lifestyle behaviors. The turn-key program that CHIP delivers, now certified by ACLM, is what our nation needs to restore health and rein in health care spending.”
