According to New Hanover Research and ALAS Report, The Pandemic is Still Disrupting the Overall Wellness of K12 Districts

Hanover Research, a leading provider of data and insights to K12 school leaders, has released new findings from the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Needs Assessment Survey in collaboration with the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS). The report provides a breakdown of wellness self-perceptions and identified needs among secondary students throughout the country as well as, the perceptions of parents and staff nationwide examining how their perceptions of student wellness compare to help district leaders addressing current mental health concerns in schools.

“Students and staff have returned full-time, in-person to schools after their routines were disrupted because of the pandemic,” says Maria Armstrong, Executive Director, ALAS. “We found that the mental health needs of students, staff, and parents have become more urgent than before; therefore, multi-level support of academic, cultural, and social-emotional needs that create a positive school climate must be implemented in districts across the country.” Drawing from insights gathered from more than 2,000 respondents (students, teachers, administrators, and parents) across the country, the report includes key findings on:

  • The Overall Mental State of Students and Staff
  • The Influence of the Pandemic on Districts
  • Students Seeking Support
  • Perceived Mental Health Support
  • And More

“This study underscores that district leaders must build a high-performing administration team that prioritizes students, parents, and staff mental health,” according to Dr. Leila Nuland, Ph.D., senior managing director, Hanover Research. “With so many diverse students having specific needs, successful districts will need to listen to student, staff, and community viewpoints and find ways to address their needs as they evolve. Our hope is that school districts use this report to understand and build strategies around the factors that influence overall student, staff, and community wellness, especially in times of uncertainty.” Dr. Nuland, alongside Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez, superintendent of Hartford Public Schools in Hartford, CT, also presented results of the findings at the 19th ALAS Annual National Education Summit on October 7, 2022, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
