A World Free of Preventable Disease

Our readers are looking for the science behind wellness and inspiration to lead healthy, happy lives, so we are eager to share each month’s Moonshot theme with them. My hope is that we’ll continue to build a community of people committed to personal and global health.

The Global Wellness Institute™ (GWI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to empower wellness worldwide by educating the public and private sectors about preventative health and wellness, today announced a special collaboration with Hearst’s Prevention magazine for 2020. Every month, Prevention will dedicate a full page to the theme of the GWI’s The Wellness Moonshot Calendar. The calendar will be featured in both print and digital editions of the magazine, inspiring an additional 13 million people to eradicate preventable, chronic diseases and reduce the staggering human and economic costs associated with them.

“Prevention has been a trusted health resource and wellness thought-leader for 70 years, so partnering with the Global Wellness Institute on The Wellness Moonshot was a natural fit,” says Sarah Smith, content director, Prevention. “Our readers are looking for the science behind wellness and inspiration to lead healthy, happy lives, so we are eager to share each month’s Moonshot theme with them. My hope is that we’ll continue to build a community of people committed to personal and global health.”

The Wellness Moonshot Calendar concept was conceived and designed by Jessica Jesse, CEO of BuDhaGirl, and revolves around the cycles of the full moon, the period of the lunar cycle that emits the most vibrant energy, inspiring new ideas and habits. The 2020 calendar takes its cues from nature, and Jesse says, “Preventing chronic disease is something everyone at every level can do. The Moonshot Calendar was designed to help individuals, families, companies and communities champion wellness in a creative, engaging manner. The moon is always with us; it is a great anchor of energy, of time, of myth and of hope.”

As we embrace a new year, January is about “emerge”—what it means to grow as wellness leaders who consciously empower the health and happiness of our families, workplaces and communities, while also cultivating our personal wellbeing. For February, the theme is “include,” highlighting the joy that comes when we embrace wholeness at work and at home, as well as within ourselves. Renee Moorefield, CEO of Wisdom Works, curates each month’s tips and articles.

“The Wellness Moonshot Calendar’s impact is growing exponentially. Last year, our focus was on wellness in the workplace, where we engaged with the leaders of over 350 businesses and organizations reaching over 500,000 individuals to get them to commit to healthier work cultures,” says Susie Ellis, GWI chairman and CEO. “We are thrilled to be extending the reach of The Wellness Moonshot to the readers of Prevention magazine and providing them with a monthly roadmap for meaningful change.”

As an umbrella organization that brings together often siloed forces and sectors all working to build a healthier world, the GWI is committed to bringing the issue of preventable disease to the forefront of its research and education efforts. The Wellness Moonshot: A World Free of Preventable Disease was launched in 2017 at the Global Wellness Summit by Ellis and Dr. Richard H. Carmona, 17th Surgeon General of the United States and current chief of health innovation, Canyon Ranch.

Dr. Mehmet C. Oz, professor of surgery, Columbia University and host of The Dr. Oz Show, commented at the launch: “We have to be brave enough to take on this Moonshot—we really need to accelerate the focus on prevention.”

Organizations and individuals can support The Wellness Moonshot and receive the 2020 calendar by making a donation to the nonprofit GWI, signifying their commitment to creating a culture of wellness within their organization or community.
