“Childhood hunger in the U.S. is shameful and needs to be better known and addressed. We are trying to bring focus and solutions to the cause with our 2019 Social Impact Challenge and hope many others will come along and get involved,” said CEO Dave Landa.

Two San Francisco-based organizations, Kintone, the teamwork platform with a visual application builder that empowers organizations to manage their data and workflows for better collaboration, and Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup, today announced the 2019 Social Impact Challenge. Now in its second year, the purpose of the Social Impact Challenge is to advocate for using technology and teamwork to solve the issues and challenges facing local communities. This annual initiative brings together social change agents who design, build and showcase technologies that directly increase the public good at a community level.

This year, the Social Impact Challenge will focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 2 to end hunger by 2030, addressing the youth hunger crisis in the U.S. specifically. Together with Caravan Studios, Kintone will select technology-driven solutions developed by subject matter experts and voted on by the public that will best address the challenge and work toward eradicating childhood hunger.

Attendees of Kintone Connect, a series of free, half-day teamwork, technology and impact conferences held in four cities across the U.S., will learn about and vote on the innovative solution concepts. In collaboration with the winner, Kintone will then build the winning solution, present it at the San Francisco event, and finally give it back to the community to help address the youth hunger issue head-on.

According to No Kid Hungry, more than 12 million children in the United States live in “food insecure” homes and one in six children in the United States lives with hunger.

“It’s shocking that 28% of San Francisco’s youth are at chronic risk of hunger. Taking responsibility and respecting individuality are two core elements of our mission at Kintone, as is helping to create a society brimming with teamwork. Thanks to the teamwork with TechSoup’s Caravan Studios and concerned citizens, we’re humbled and inspired to work together toward addressing this shocking manifestation of societal inequality,” said Dave Landa, CEO, Kintone. “In order to meet the goal of equality, we need to first address basic human needs. Children who struggle with hunger and malnutrition often do not reach their peak potential physically or mentally, and therefore fall into a negative cycle of under-development caused by nutrition deficiency. We need to end that cycle.”

The public can vote for their favorite solution online now by clicking here or in person at one of the following Kintone Connect events:

  • Boston – September 19
  • Chicago – October 9
  • San Francisco – December 12
