At Keychron we’re all about typing comfort, so it was important for us to add an Alice-style keyboard to our offering. This layout appeals to many typists because it allows them to angle their hands and wrists in a more natural position.

Today Keychron, established manufacturer of wireless mechanical keyboards for Mac, Windows and Android, launched direct sales of Q8 on the brand’s website. This model is a full aluminum mechanical keyboard in the visually striking, ergo style 65% Alice layout. Four versions are available: barebone is $175 USD, barebone knob is $185 USD, fully assembled is $195 USD, and fully assembled knob is $205 USD.

“Wrists can be angled unnaturally on traditional keyboards causing strain on muscles and a host of issues for typists,” said Paul Tan, COO of Keychron. “At Keychron we’re all about typing comfort, so it was important for us to add an Alice-style keyboard to our offering. This layout appeals to many typists because it has a space that visually separates the board into two halves with the keys extending outwards in a wingspan-shaped form allowing users to angle their hands and wrists in a more natural position.”

With its all-metal CNC machined body, a full-size layout, double-gasket design, QMK/VIA support, south-facing RGB, and knob option, the Q8 meets practical needs and provides a high-end typing experience. The entire metal body is crafted with 6063 aluminum that is processed through CNC machine, polished, anodized, sandblasted, and undergoes 24 more manufacturing stages to make the solid metal piece of art that is the Q8. A brand new ultra-low-power MCU Arm structure is armed with 128K Flash to provide more flexibility for developers. The polling rate is up to 1000 Hz out of the box, which makes latency non-existent for the competitive gamer.

“We designed every component of Q8 to be easily assembled, so users can adjust the keyboard to their needs,” continued Tan. “The premium rotary encoder allows users to easily customize their favorite keys and macros on the knob through the VIA software such as: zooming in/out, adjusting screen brightness, brush size, volume, and selecting video clips or photos. The open-source firmware means endless possibilities for keyboard layouts, shortcuts, backlight effects, and more.”

The Double Gasket Design is a new innovative structure in the industry. In addition to the gaskets on the plates, Keychron added silicone pads between the top and bottom cases to significantly reduce the sound resonance between the metals and reduce the noise of the impacted metals. This design allows the keyboard to maintain the flexibility of the gasket structure and improves the overall typing sound.

For the new double-shot PBT keycaps, Keychron built a new profile called the OSA (OEM spherical angled) keycap. It has a similar height to the OEM profile and has an SA-like shape. The PBT keycaps provide excellent oil resistance, enhance the type feel, and prevent the legends from fading out.

The hot-swappable sockets are mounted on the PCB, so users can install or change the switches without soldering. The PCB supports both three- and five-pin MX mechanical switches. The optimized molded switch with more precise positioning and less wobble will undoubtedly improve the feel at the user’s fingertips. With the fully assembled Q8 version fitted with factory pre-lubricated Gateron G Pro switches providing a smoother travel experience. The screw-in design increases stability and makes it easier for changes and upgrades.

Built with the Mac users’ experience in mind while still retaining compatibility for Windows devices, the Keychron Q8 comes with a system toggle and an additional set of customized keycaps for both Windows and macOS systems. Users can now save two different layouts on the keyboard, one for each system.
