“We all know intuitively that workouts are more fun when accompanied by a great soundtrack, but it’s revealing to see just how dramatic the impact of music is on building a profitable digital fitness business,” said Feed.fm COO Lauren Pufpaf.

Feed.fm, the leader in music services for the fitness industry, today announced the results of its study “The 2022 Mobile App Music Report,” which explored the connection between professionally curated music and its impact on fitness routines across digital fitness apps and connected devices. The data revealed that curated music increases session times and overall retention rates.
Researchers determined that music stations curated by Feed.fm resulted in 3X longer workout session times. In addition to driving an increased length of exercise sessions, music also played an important role in bringing people back more regularly to their fitness regimes. The study consistently found that professionally curated music brought people back to their exercise routines over a 90 day period almost twice as often as those who didn’t listen to in-app music programmed by Feed.fm.
“We all know intuitively that workouts are more fun when accompanied by a great soundtrack, but it’s revealing to see just how dramatic the impact of music is on building a profitable digital fitness business,” said Feed.fm COO Lauren Pufpaf. “Digital fitness companies who make bespoke music an integral part of their experience are going to see increased session times and retention and ultimately higher revenues.”
An overwhelming 93 percent of people say that music makes or breaks a workout and that the right song at the right time is key to improving one’s performance. What were the most popular songs in Feed’s deep dive into exercise data in the first half of 2022? Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers,” and K-pop megastars BTS with “Butter,” were fan favorites, as were Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 you” and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” (feat. SZA). Generally speaking, songs that were popular, upbeat with strong melodies made the cut for fitness enthusiasts.
