In its role as a community provider of hand-to-hand combat training steeped in discipline and respect, City of Palms Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is proud to announce it is the latest affiliate gym in the Adopt A Cop BJJ program. This move is in support of the program’s goal of “ultimately reduc[ing] the incidents of police-involved shootings and deaths” through advocating for law enforcement officers (LEOs).
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Advantage for Law Enforcement
The mission of Adopt A Cop BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is to address gaps in police training that often send front-line officers into volatile situations with minimal defense training outside of the Academy. These LEOs are first to interface with the public. They are tasked with assessing and, if necessary, deescalating situations that are in danger of becoming physical confrontations.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training produces skilled grapplers — and a LEO with BJJ-instilled discipline has the skill and confidence to swiftly bring a confrontation under control, making them less likely to resort to lethal force.
The program’s success relies on local BJJ gyms to provide services to their respective communities. City of Palms BJJ has stepped in to be the resource for LEOs in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and throughout Lee County in Southwest Florida. As an affiliate gym, City of Palms BJJ promises to “Adopt a Cop,” allowing one officer to train for free until they reach Blue Belt status (which typically takes 12 to 18 months). Subsequent officers will be allowed to train for a reduced fee. Their training fees are subsidized by Adopt A Cop BJJ.
How the Public Can Help
While much of the discourse around policing, criminality, and violence focuses on systems rather than individuals, Adopt A Cop BJJ allows local businesses and residents to invest in their neighborhood LEOs and take a concrete step towards improving their communities. City of Palms BJJ is asking the public to consider making a donation via the program website at https://adoptacopbjj.org. Individual officers or City of Palms BJJ may be sponsored by name. Please include your intention to sponsor individuals or the gym in the comments when making a donation.
