Indoor Rowing Studio To Open on Magazine Street In Spring 2022

Ergofit, a boutique fitness studio offering group-fitness classes, will open on Magazine Street in Spring 2022. The studio, centered around the indoor rowing machine (RowErg), will also incorporate the use of Concept2’s BikeErg and the SkiErg, as well as traditional floor exercises.

The studio is founded by three former collegiate rowers: Jonathan DeJean (LSU ‘12), John Huppi (Tulane ‘11) and Hannah Huppi (Tulane ‘11). After competing against each other in college, three reconnected in 2015 to provide indoor rowing opportunities for New Orleans-area youth via the New Orleans Rowing Club. Currently, DeJean is the owner and operator of Krewe Fitness, a crossfit-style gym located in Uptown New Orleans. J. Huppi is a professor and head rowing coach at Tulane University. H. Huppi is an executive at a real estate technology firm. Both Huppis are on the USRowing National Team and recently competed at the 2021 World Rowing Championships where they won Bronze.

The three founders are excited to bring indoor rowing to the New Orleans community. DeJean said, “Rowing is one of the best workouts a person can do, as it works your body from head to toe. Every major muscle group is activated during the rowing stroke, allowing you to not only build cardiovascular fitness, but also build muscle. It is also an incredibly versatile machine, and it can be used to build endurance, improve explosive power, and perform HIIT exercises.”

In addition to the Concept2 RowErg, the gym will also utilize it’s sister machines: the Concept2 BikeErg and SkiErg. DeJean said, “by incorporating the BikeErg and SkiErg into our workout model, we believe Ergofit will provide our clients with the ultimate full-body workout. The BikeErg really focuses on lower-body strength, while the SkiErg targets the upper-body and core. Together with the RowErg, plus traditional floor exercises, our customers will experience the most efficient and effective full-body workout on the market.”

All three Concept2 machines utilize flywheel technology – a product that uses airflow to provide resistance. H. Huppi said “the design allows for a very personalized offering. Whether you are brand new to the sport, or you are an Olympic athlete, the same machines are suitable for giving you an optimal workout for your current fitness level.” H. Huppi also noted the low-impact nature of the machines, “Ergofit is a great option for those looking for low-impact workouts that still provide high-energy and intensity. We want to create a fun, inclusive environment for people of all ages and abilities to get a great, full-body workout.”

The gym, which is currently under construction, will open on Magazine Street in Spring 2022. J. Huppi, said “we can’t wait to transform this vacant historic property into a vibrant retail storefront that adds to the ever-growing experiential retail market on Magazine Street.”
