HAI Group, a family of insurance companies that serves the public and affordable housing industries, has awarded 20 low-income students $6,000 each in college and other higher-education scholarships.

This year’s 2020 HAI Group Resident Scholarship recipients hail from 12 states. The 20 recipients are majoring in various areas of study from dental hygiene and biology to agriculture, criminal justice, accounting, and more, and are working toward certificates and degrees from Rutgers University, the University of New Hampshire, Virginia State University, Northeastern University, California State University, and Gene Juarez Academy-Federal Way, to name a few.

Established in 2003, the HAI Group Resident Scholarship Program helps low-income students pay for higher education. To qualify for a scholarship, students must live on a property that is insured by HAI Group and be enrolled in an accredited and/or licensed technical school or accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States. Recipients are randomly selected after participation criteria are met.

“This scholarship will allow me to take additional courses per semester to reach my goal of obtaining my bachelor’s degree faster, [and] allow me to focus more on my studies without worrying about struggling to pay for school,” said Natasha Cross, an individualized studies major at George Mason University and a 2020 HAI Group Resident Scholarship recipient. “Receiving this scholarship is truly a blessing.”

“Education boosts earning potential and is a direct path out of poverty,” said Ed Malaspina, HAI Group’s president and chief executive officer. “HAI Group is known for pioneering public and affordable housing insurance programs, but we’re also a passionate advocate for low-income families. Funding this scholarship every year is one important way we can help people thrive.”

To date, HAI Group has awarded more than $1.2 million in higher-education scholarships to 450 students.
