Systemic Racism Remains an Issue in Nursing, Panelists Say

To promote dialogue about the state of race and inclusivity in the nursing profession, Tipton Health Communications recently hosted a webinar discussion led by renowned and respected nursing leaders from across the country.

Ena Williams, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Yale New Haven Hospital, moderated the roundtable discussion about racial bias and inclusive practices in the nursing profession during the June 24 conversation. Williams was joined by Ernest Grant, PhD, RN, FAAN, president of the American Nurses Association, and Martha A. Dawson, DNP, RN, FACHE, president of the National Black Nurses Association, who shared their personal experiences in the workplace, as well as strategies nurses and nursing leaders can use to create change in their organizations.

The strategies they laid out included recognizing implicit bias, acknowledging the structural racism their institutions may perpetuate, fostering diversity and inclusion through the C-suite level, and promoting change by using their power as top employers in their communities to address racism head-on.

Tipton Health encourages all healthcare leaders to view the discussion, available at tiptonhealth.com/webinars.

“So many nurse leaders told us that they truly valued the discussion that we are planning several more webinars to dig deeper, particularly around actions that nurse leaders can take now to advocate for and implement change,” said Dan Tipton, CEO of Tipton Health Communications
