Together, we can help build community, improve women’s wellbeing and help combat loneliness. All by lacing up our sneakers and heading out the door.

“If there was one thing you could do to help you lose weight, think better, be happier and live longer, would you do it?” asks Joyce Shulman. Shulman is the leader of 99 Walks, a monthly walking challenge app and community that inspires its members to get up, get moving, and crush their goals.
In her debut book, “Walk Your Way to Better,” Shulman shares 99 stories, pieces of research and thought starters. Then, she encourages readers to lace up their sneakers and head out the door to process the things that are standing in their way and, through this journey, transform their lives.
Shulman founded 99 Walks to encourage women to get healthier and happier through the simple act of walking together. Her mission? Nothing short of getting 1 million women walking, to encourage fitness and wellness and help combat the loneliness epidemic.
Shulman, who also co-founded Macaroni Kid, shared an in-house study of 2,300 women that revealed a startling fact: 73% of women experience loneliness. And according to a study reported by UC Berkeley, 1 in 4 Americans feel like they don’t have a single close friend in the world.
Shulman was encouraged to write her book because of this study, “Women are lonely. And the solution is simple, accessible, magical. Women who regularly walk with friends report that they are two-and-a-half times less likely to often feel lonely. 2.5 times.”
Each section of the book provides a thought-starter, a piece of information, a story, or research that encourages readers to head out the door, contemplate the things that are standing in their way and reap the benefits of walking for their body, mind and mood.
Wellness practitioners from across the nation are applauding Shulman’s message including Dr. Taz Bhatia, MD., board-certified integrative medicine physician, wellness expert, and author of the “Superwoman RX.” “In my practice, I am passionate about the profound connection and synergy between women and children’s health and their ultimate impact on the health of the entire family,” said Bhatia. “Walk Your Way to Better and author Joyce Shulman, whom I have had the personal pleasure of interviewing on my podcast Super Women Wellness, highlight the superpower of walking for women and the ultimate effect such a simple activity has on global health. Thank you, Joyce, for walking us, especially women, towards wellbeing.”
Walk Your Way to Better is available on Amazon (available in paperback and via kindle) and join the 99 Walks because, as Shulman writes, “Together, we can help build community, improve women’s wellbeing and help combat loneliness. All by lacing up our sneakers and heading out the door.”
