The Melanoma Research Foundation to Acquire the SunAWARE for Life Curriculum for Melanoma Prevention in Youth

News Image

The Melanoma Research Foundation, the largest independent organization devoted to melanoma, today announced that it will be acquiring the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation’s (CMPF) SunAWARE for Life curriculum to ensure that the wonderful work that has been done over the past 18 years continues and grows into an even larger national program.

The SunAWARE for Life program is a school curriculum and community education initiative aligned with the National Health Education Standards that is designed to promote sun protection and skin cancer prevention in children, teens and adults. The program is divided into content groupings for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 to ensure the material is easy to understand and relevant to each age group. The virtual content of the program allows educators to facilitate an engaging, entertaining and interactive program customized to the individual needs of the school or organization, illustrating UV exposure, sun damage and proper sunscreen application.

“We share the strong commitment of CMPF to educate and prevent skin cancer in our most vulnerable population,” said MRF CEO Kyleigh LiPira. “Experiencing just 5 blistering sunburns during childhood and adolescence increases your risk of melanoma by 80%, making sun protection especially important in these early years.”

The SunAWARE for Life curriculum will be integrated into the MRF’s Education Institute, making this critically important resource available to the millions of users who visit the MRF website annually. Thanks to the forward looking, innovative work of the CMPF, new video lessons make the program completely accessible in a digital format designed for home, hybrid or in-school learning.

“Following this 18-year journey, we are so pleased to now be part of the largest independent organization devoted to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma,” shared CMPF Founder and Executive Director Maryellen Maguire-Eisen. “We have been working with their team to help plan for the utilization and implementation of our SunAWARE curriculum and program resources through the MRF platform. It is abundantly clear that their culture, work ethic and commitment to preventing melanoma is perfectly aligned with ours.”

“Melanoma education is a foundational pillar of the MRF’s mission with a strategic focus on prevention,” said MRF Board Chair Doug Brodman. “We applaud the exceptional leadership of the CMPF staff and board to promote a lifetime of sun safe behaviors and are proud to share this with an even wider audience through the MRF Education Institute.”

News Image

“Our office takes pride in helping patients regain their confidence so that they can become the best version of themselves,” says Dr. Buffington.

A trusted family dental practice serving Marietta and surrounding communities, Dental Care Center at Kenenstone is located at 129 Marble Mill Road in Marietta, GA. The practice is led by Dr. Angela Ojibway, who bought the practice in 2015, and has grown it since with her emphasis on smile design, Invisalign, full mouth restoration, and Botox and Dermal Fillers.

Dr. Ojibway further cultivated the practice when she hired Dr. Sarah Buffington in 2017 to be Dental Care Center at Kennestone’s full time dentist. Dr. Buffington graduated from SUNY at Buffalo in 2011 before moving back home for private practice. She was born and raised in Georgia and is happy to be taking care of patients back at home. Dr. Buffington married another Georgia native in 2019 and they currently reside in Kennesaw.

Dr. Buffington takes great pride and satisfaction when one of her patients walks out the door of Dental Care Center at Kennestone after a positive experience or with a life changing smile. She loves that she gets to come to work, enjoy what she is going, give patient smiles that they can wear proudly, and ensure that they have a wonderful experience. She believes that our smiles are the gateway to our souls. “When someone isn’t comfortable with their smile, it can affect their overall confidence. Our office takes pride in helping patients regain their confidence so that they can become the best version of themselves.” Dr. Buffington’s focus is on treating the person, not just the teeth.

The providers and staff and Dental Care Center at Kennestone all love dentistry and continually try to better themselves for the patients. The staff are all people who strive to make patients feel welcomed. Dental Care Center at Kennestone’s mission is to treat patients with care and compassion from the moment they walk in the door: “In our practice, we treat patients like they are our family- as in, I make sure to treat each patient with the same amount of care that I would give to my parents and I try to help my patients in any way possible,” says Dr. Buffington.

Immuno-Oncology – Converting Cancer to a “Chronic Disease,” Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

This subpopulation of patients tends to lead a life with cancer as a chronic disease rather than a terminal illness.

The treatment of a cancer patient with immunotherapies offers unparalleled innovation that harnesses the immune system, leading to incredible overall survival benefits for patients who respond. This subpopulation of patients tends to lead a life with cancer as a chronic disease rather than a terminal illness.

However, this can only be achieved if the following questions are answered:

  • Which patients will likely benefit, or not?
  • Do we have sufficient data to answer the above question/or are we using the current data?
  • And how can we design future trials that address that?

Register for this webinar in which featured speakers will try to answer the above questions to initiate discussion and raise awareness.

What is the Link Between Pharmacovigilance and Building Confidence Around COVID-19 Vaccines? Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

At the end of 2020, between 37 and 44 percent of Americans stated that they would not accept a COVID-19 vaccine, whatever the cost.

In 2019, the WHO identified vaccine hesitancy as one of the top ten global health threats. At the end of 2020, between 37 and 44 percent of Americans stated that they would not accept a COVID-19 vaccine, whatever the cost. The exceptionally fast pace of development, the seemingly new mRNA technology of some of the vaccines, the accelerated approval process and the mistrustful attitude of the population have created a unique regulatory setting where pharmacovigilance and safety have become cornerstone. Of note, the rates of (re-) infection post-vaccine do not appear in any of the risk management plans (RMP) of vaccine makers.

ICON can provide differentiated service in ensuring vaccine safety through:

  • Provision of safety monitoring after approval, including:
  • Post-marketed signal detection utilizing MAH specific data and data from public databases, literature
  • Tracking of signals and Risk Minimization Measures
  • Facilitate drafting and submission of aggregate safety reports
  • Post-authorization safety studies conducted by the vaccines’ manufacturers, as well as other longitudinal observational studies
  • Results of an in-house study on rates of COVID (re-)infections post-vaccine amongst patients with a critical disease

Using modern technologies and methods is paramount in fulfilling the complete lifecycle of these vaccines and building confidence in our healthcare systems.

Join experts from ICON Plc, Florent Richy, Director, Pharmacovigilance & Patient Safety; Bettina Rillmann, Director, Operations, Real World Solutions; and Robina Azam, Director, Patient Safety, Pharmacovigilance & Patient Safety, in a live webinar on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 10am EST (3pm GMT/UK).

Whole-Body MRI Composite Scoring in Neuromuscular Disease Research & Muscle Health, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Imaging the whole body enables the identification of a personalized set of affected muscles, decreasing the variability and increasing the sensitivity of efficacy assessment.

In the intensive search for treatments and cures for neuromuscular disorders (NMDs), recent technical advances have led to the development of muscle biomarkers based on whole-body water and fat separated MRI that can describe the distribution and progression of muscle atrophy and fat replacement with high precision and accuracy. Imaging the whole body enables the identification of a personalized set of affected muscles, decreasing the variability and increasing the sensitivity of efficacy assessment.

In this webinar, two experts will review techniques for whole-body MRI and its application in NMD clinical research. Technical aspects will be discussed, including:

  • Practical implementation of MRI scanning protocols
  • Image analysis techniques
  • Biomarker definitions
  • How challenges related to multi-site implementation can be addressed

The featured speakers will also discuss the use of composite scores and the experience of using them as endpoints in recent facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) clinical trials.

RARE-X Shares Its Patient-Centric Approach to Consent in New White Paper

News Image

The white paper explores RARE-X’s method of developing flexible and easy-to-understand Consent and Data-Sharing Agreements.

RARE-X, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling patient communities to easily collect, manage, and share their health data through best-in-class technology, has published a new white paper titled A Patient-Centric Approach to Consent. The white paper explores RARE-X’s method of developing flexible and easy-to-understand Consent and Data-Sharing Agreements. Its novel approach is another way RARE-X lowers the barriers to participation for rare disease patients while protecting their privacy and allowing them to retain ownership of their own data.

The white paper shows how the RARE-X consent and governance processes capitalize on advances in information technology, allowing for flexibility. Most importantly, it recognizes patients as owners of their data and gives them, rather than a researcher, patient organization, or corporation, the power to determine who has access to their data. The paper draws from the insights of Vanessa Vogel Farley, Research & Data Governance Lead for RARE-X, and data governance expert, Joy Pritts, Esq.

An accompanying RARE-Xtra podcast features Deven McGraw, chief regulatory officer for Ciitizen, and Vanessa Vogel Farley, who describe the consent process, why it was necessary to reinvent it, and what a patient-centric consent process looks like. Daniel Levine hosts the RARE-Xtra podcast.

Visit the RARE-X website to download a complimentary copy of A Patient-Centric Approach to Consent or listen to the RARE-Xtra podcast at RARE-X.org.

Technology helps identify essential health screenings

Verinovum

Over the course of the last year, at least 41 percent of adults decided to forgo care because of COVID-19 concerns, according to a study in JAMA.

INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY

Technology helps identify essential missed screening Verinovum leadership offer expert advice for positive outcomes

Will the next big story in healthcare be the toll missed screenings have taken on population health? Leadership at Verinovum, a health data curation and enrichment technology company, offers expert advice for positive outcomes.

COVID-19 changed a lot of things in the last two years — including the percentage of individuals taking time out for essential screenings such as for heart disease, breast and other cancers, and chronic conditions, such as diabetes. I’d like to suggest a story idea about how healthcare technology providers and payers can partner to regroup and reboot regular screenings … and save lives.

Over the course of the last year, at least 41 percent of adults decided to forgo care because of COVID-19 concerns, according to a study in JAMA. From April 2019 to April 2020, there were 40 percent fewer cardiac screenings performed. The number of colonoscopies dropped 93 percent and the number of mammograms fell 90 percent.

For patients who were already behind on recommended screenings, these missed screenings could result in later diagnoses and potentially increased morbidity.

The good news is health care providers and technology companies have proven methods to identify patients who are behind in these needed screenings. One such method is Verinovum’s InFocus platform which has the capability to aggregate and standardize data from various systems to more readily pull a list of patients who did and did not have a preventive screening. Verinovum’s product can generate a list of members based on their last preventive health screening to easily see if they received their screening for 2020 or even in 2021. And then providers can connect with patients to encourage catching up on this important preventive health option.

Verinovum’s leadership team can discuss the importance of essential screenings and how both payers and providers can work together for optimum patient health by encouraging preventive screenings. Verinovum’s Maiuri Ranchhod, M.D. is an industry leader in healthcare technology who can provide unique insights on data curation solutions. With more than 7 years in healthcare management, Maiuri has a deep understanding of clinical challenges and business operations along with a passion for improving patient outcomes. In addition, Mike Noshay, Chief Strategy Officer, can discuss optimizing data integrity in order to make informed and accurate health decisions that improve patient outcomes. Mike is an expert on making clinical (EHR) data clean, complete, and usable to help comply with 21st Century Cures Act implementation guidelines.

If you are interested in connecting with Dr. Ranchhod or Mr. Noshay, please contact Susan Thwing, (248) 396-1083 or susan@envhs.com to schedule an interview.

News Image

“We are excited about this opportunity to expand our outreach within the community and to offer this important service to more patients and families in the Detroit area.”

Heart to Heart Hospice, a leader in hospice services since 2003, will soon be opening a new Hospice Inpatient Center in the Detroit area. The facility, scheduled to begin taking patients winter 2021-2022, will be located in Troy, Mich.

Kelly Mitchell, Heart to Heart’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer, said the hospice provider will be leasing space inside the Belmar Oakland Assisted Living facility at 5990 N. Adams Road in Troy. “We are excited about this opportunity to expand our outreach within the community and to offer this important service to more patients and families in the Detroit area,” Mitchell said. “We expect to be open to accept eligible hospice patients shortly.”

The new Hospice Inpatient Center will be designed to create a home-like environment for hospice patients in the event of a medical crisis or when caregivers need a break from their duties. Although most hospice care is provided in the home, a patient may qualify for inpatient care to control acute pain and other symptoms, or to provide a respite for caregivers.

“Our goal is to provide comfort and dignity,” said Mitchell, “and our new Inpatient Center will include a full array of amenities to meet the needs of both patients and their loved ones.”

The Inpatient Center will be staffed by healthcare professionals specially trained in hospice care. The Heart to Heart Hospice interdisciplinary team consists of physicians, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers, and bereavement specialists. Together, they provide the specific medical, emotional, spiritual, and practical support patients and their families need.

New Daily Devotional Helps Readers Become Closer with the Bible and Meet Life Challenges in Only Five Minutes a Day

“5 Minutes with God: A 365 Daily Devotional” By Brett T. Gilford

“My addiction recovery and journey with the Lord has been wonderful, not an easy one, but every day just got better and better. When you surrender your life to God, He does amazing things for you,” said Elder Brett. “You’re never too young or old to spend five minutes with God.”

As a Christian Elder, Brett T. Gilford approaches 35 years of sobriety, he is now sharing the wonderful journey of how God helped to restore him at the darkest point in his life to inspire others to turn to Jesus in time of need. His new book “5 Minutes with God: A 365 Daily Devotional” provides a simple and easy approach to the Bible for those who may be new to their faith and those looking to deepen it.

Around 2008, Elder Brett started writing a gratitude list of 10 things he was grateful for each day which evolved into “Messages from Brett” after the Lord started speaking to him. He would send these messages to friends and family and then they eventually morphed into “5 Minutes with God.” He started compiling his devotionals and selected one for each day of the year along with a recommended scripture to provide readers with an easy way to connect with the Lord daily.

“My addiction recovery and journey with the Lord has been wonderful, not an easy one, but every day just got better and better. When you surrender your life to God, He does amazing things for you,” said Elder Brett. “You’re never too young or old to spend five minutes with God.”

“Spending time with God is vitally important to the believer. Without it, we would be like a ship without a rudder; aimlessly drifting through life. I am excited about Elder Brett Gilford’s devotional…His life is a testimony that spending 5 minutes with God reaps countless rewards.” – Pastor Sheryl Brady, Sr. Pastor of The Potter’s House North Dallas

Elder Brett acknowledges that everyone has different challenges and states that the Word of God will help get them through it. He hopes his journey will impact readers for years to come and that his devotional will help draw people closer to God and have an intimate relationship with their Bible.
