5 Proven Ways to Encourage Friends and Family to Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19

News Image

In fact, the key strategies for preventing COVID-19 and reducing spread—social distancing, washing hands, wearing masks, wearing personal protective equipment, voluntary testing, and willing participation in contact tracing—are all behavioral.

Methods to Encourage Friends and Family to Get Vaccinated

1. Lead by Example.

It may sound cheesy, but actions do speak louder than words. A study of more than 700 U.S. adults showed that social norms matter when it comes to COVID-19 prevention behaviors. When you mask, distance, and get vaccinated, you help others see it as a normal choice their friends and family are making. Posting about your vaccination experience on social media is a convenient way to let family and friends know that you are vaccinated and enjoying the benefits of having done so.

2. Focus on the negative.

A scientific survey of more than 1,300 people showed messages that focus on the negative outcomes of not being vaccinated had a greater impact on willingness to get vaccinated than messages that focused on the benefits. These messages focused on the specific dangers of not being vaccinated, such as: If you do not get a COVID-19 vaccine, you have a much higher probability of getting infected with COVID-19 and 1 in 4 of those infected end up with “long COVID-19” which is when symptoms like fatigue or loss of sense of taste and smell last for months.

3. Suggest they talk to their doctor.

Research shows that primary care doctors are trusted voices who can have a significant impact in health decisions. Plus, doctors will have helpful, reliable information on how the vaccines were created, how they work, their safety, and their positive health impacts.

4. Ask how you can help them overcome obstacles.

We know the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing racial/ethnic and socioeconomic health inequities in the United States. For family and friends, you might offer to provide transportation, childcare, or other help making—and keeping—that vaccination appointment.

5. Attach your message to something the person values.

People resonate with messages that align with their personal values. Getting vaccinated connects with values many people have such as “being a good Christian,” “protecting the elderly,” “keeping kids safe in schools,” “eliminating health inequities,” “getting the economy back up and running,” or even “getting Saturday poker nights started again.”

Think about what your loved one really cares about and discuss how getting vaccinated is connected to that thing.

These are all behavioral strategies for improving health, and they come to us thanks to the field of behavioral medicine and its dedicated researchers and clinicians. In fact, the key strategies for preventing COVID-19 and reducing spread—social distancing, washing hands, wearing masks, wearing personal protective equipment, voluntary testing, and willing participation in contact tracing—are all behavioral.

Behavioral medicine has offered much scientific and clinical evidence on how to get people to take steps to protect themselves and others. Behavioral medicine also offers evidence for how to stay healthy during the ongoing pandemic. There are resources on behavioral ways to manage stress, keep kids and adults physically active, cook healthy food, and generally cut yourself some slack in these challenging times.

Diamond Packaging Wins Sustainable Leadership Award for Cannabis Packaging

The competition, sponsored by Cannabis & Tech Today in partnership with Regennabis, shines a light on companies acting as stewards of the environment along every step of the cannabis life cycle, from sustainable growing practices to eco-friendly packaging.

Diamond Packaging today announced that it was a winner of Cannabis & Tech Today’s 2021 Sustainable Leadership Award in the Packaging category. The competition, sponsored by Cannabis & Tech Today in partnership with Regennabis, seeks to shine a light on those companies acting as stewards of the environment along every step of the cannabis life cycle, from sustainable growing practices to eco-friendly packaging. It demonstrates the cannabis industry can be sustainable, eco-friendly, and a valuable tool in the global fight against climate change.

Diamond was recognized for its Greenbox initiative to research, design, and implement more sustainable packaging solutions for the cannabis industry. The core of the initiative – designs, materials, and methods – represents a comprehensive approach to packaging that minimizes environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Through creative design, careful material selection, and best practices at the plant level, Diamond minimizes waste, reduces shipping costs, and increases efficiencies – all of which support a sustainable use of resources and cultivate a positive emotional connection to the brand.

Diamond’s design engineers create packaging that is both innovative and sustainable, while considering factors such as product protection, usability, sustainability, and first moment of truth (FMOT). They “right size” the carton and look for opportunities to reduce weight, reduce material usage, and eliminate or replace components.

Diamond carefully evaluates materials and suppliers to make the best recommendation for its customers’ products. In 2020 over 97% of all packaging was made from renewable or recycled paperboards, many FSC-certified. Diamond has also been a pioneer in the adoption of paperboards with recycled content, including mixed sources and 100% recycled options.

From concept to completion, the company’s approach to package design addresses sustainability throughout the supply chain. This includes incorporating best practices at the plant level, e.g., renewable energy, energy efficiency, process improvements, and waste recycling.

In 2007 Diamond became one of the first U.S.-based folding carton suppliers to purchase clean, renewable wind energy for 100% of its electrical energy requirements. The environmental benefit is equal to offsetting approximately 5,437 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, the impact of which is equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 7,101 acres of trees or removing 1,175 passenger vehicles from the road.

In 2014 Diamond became the first U.S.-based folding carton supplier to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) status. The recovery and recycling program is a natural evolution of the company’s greenbox initiative and one which will provide long-term environmental and economic benefits.

In 2021 Diamond announced a multi-year commitment to purchase carbon offsets through Climate Action Reserve (CAR) to reduce its carbon footprint. Diamond facilities are now carbon neutral (covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions).

Diamond’s ‘Green Team’ meets on a regular basis to assess progress and determine short-term goals, including achieving greater manufacturing efficiencies (and the resultant decreased energy demands), and long-term goals, including more comprehensive tracking of Scope 3 emissions with the aim of decreasing or offsetting them. The company also set a series of absolute and intensity targets to reduce its energy and water consumption, plus Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for the next 10 years.

Today, Diamond’s packaging is designed utilizing recyclable or recycled paperboards (many FSC-certified), and manufactured using 100% clean, renewable wind energy, in a Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWL) and Carbon Neutral (Scope 1 and Scope 2) facility.

Diamond offers a broad range of cannabis packaging options, manufactured with the most advanced printing and decorative capabilities in the industry.

Diamond’s award-winning Lockbox® folding cartons are an upscale, CR-certified packaging solution for medical or recreational marijuana products. Diamond Lockbox® folding cartons combine beauty and strength for the ultimate in cannabis packaging design. The single and dual lock options feature finished edges and ample billboard space and can be decorated with a wide range of printing and finishing effects. The Lockbox® designs are a synergy of creative structural design, beautiful aesthetics, and industry-leading sustainability practices that Diamond is known for.

Diamond’s CBD packaging is ideal for hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol) products that contain less than 0.3% THC. The designs incorporate many of the enhancements found in its other retail package designs, including specialty coatings, foiling, embossing, debossing, and decorative die cutting.

About Diamond Packaging:

Founded in 1911, Diamond Packaging is a WBENC-certified woman-owned business specializing in developing innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. Utilizing state of-the-art technologies, Diamond designs and manufactures folding cartons for the personal care (cosmetics, hair care, skin care, fragrance, oral care, and shaving), health care, pharmaceutical, cannabis, and consumer electronics industries. Its client portfolio includes Bausch + Lomb, Charlotte’s Web, Columbia Care, L’Oréal, Otter Products, Procter & Gamble, Revlon, Shiseido, and many other Fortune 500 companies. It’s Not Too Late to Reduce Climate Change and Improve Our Health

News Image

In the face of unrelenting catastrophes, it is natural to feel anxious, depressed, and discouraged about the future. While these feelings are normal and justified, there is hope—we can adapt our behaviors to mitigate impact on our climate.

For World Science Day for Peace and Development, the Society of Behavioral Medicine is addressing three crisis we are facing, and letting others know how behavior change can help mitigate these issues. Climate change is one existential challenge of our time. 2021 is the hottest year ever recorded—and had the most wildfires, floods, and hurricanes in history. In the face of unrelenting catastrophes, it is natural to feel anxious, depressed, and discouraged about the future. While these feelings are normal and justified, there is hope—we can adapt our behaviors to mitigate impact on our climate.

Many are distrustful of science and skeptical about the reality of climate change. Those who do understand climate change often feel powerless, or think that they can’t do anything to improve it. Some are even unwilling to change their current lifestyle—but they are not aware that minor behavior changes can drastically make a difference. So on World Science Day for Peace and Development, the Society of Behavioral Medicine is sharing ways anyone can make a difference.

Try to be less car dependent. For short distances, try walking or taking a bike or a scooter. Active transportation provides additional exercise and reduces your carbon footprint. If you live in a metropolitan area, you can easily find bike lanes and shared bike systems. Hilly terrain or cold temperatures don’t deter people from using bikes. In fact, a recent survey shows San Francisco and Minneapolis as the topmost bike-friendly cities in the US, despite hills and colder temperatures.

Eat more meat-free meals. Reducing your meat consumption is good for your health and the environment. Substituting red meat and dairy-based products with plant-based options reduces greenhouse gases, especially since the production of these foods emits the highest levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Eating less meat has been associated with better heart health and lower rates of certain cancers. It’s a win for you and for the environment.

Shop locally. Buying fresh vegetables from local farmers’ markets is a great way to stay healthy, as these foods are often grown organically. Plus, you get to support a local business! If you shop locally, your environmental footprint also diminishes, as your food was not shipped globally. Organic food keeps soil and water healthier, which reduces the amount of environmental toxins you’re exposed to.

The threat of climate change can also take a toll on our mental health. Feelings of distress, sadness, anxiety or anger may persist in the face of climate change. Some people try to avoid the topic altogether in order to cope with these feelings. This approach might bring temporary relief, but is not sustainable or healthy. Instead, protect your mental health with these strategies:

Take a break and do something fun. Avoid burn out by taking a break. Consider the following:

  • take a break from the news and stop doom-scrolling
  • engage in physical exercise, walking, running, or yoga
  • spend deliberate time with your family

Take action. For many of us, doing something is better than doing nothing. Engaging with like-minded others can be uplifting and exciting. You might:

  • contact climate groups and become a climate ambassador
  • become involved in local politics
  • engage in neighborhood activities (e.g., clean-up or recycling efforts)

By making small changes to our habits and behaviors, we can reduce our carbon footprint. If we challenge ourselves to shop locally, use our cars less, and reduce our meat consumption, we can make a positive impact on our health and on the climate.

The Veterans Cannabis Group Joins Forces with Metta Medical to Co-Sponsor a New Scientific Study Into the Effectiveness of Cannabis on Sleep

Veterans Cannabis Group

Air Force Veteran and VCG Co-founder and Board Member, Jeremy Freitas concludes, “The ECS21 study represents the Veterans Cannabis Group’s ever-present commitment to driving forward the global medicinal cannabis movement while also serving the men and women who so bravely served our nation.”

The Veterans Cannabis Group (VCG), a national non-profit advocacy organization founded in 2016, announced today, in honor of Veteran’s Day, its official partnership with Metta Medical, maker of LEVEL brand cannabis edible products, to co-sponsor ECS21, a California-based study into cannabinoid cannabigerol’s potential for improving sleep.

The ECS21 study will track the effects of cannabigerol – known as CBG – on the sleep patterns of over 100 Veteran volunteers for an eight-week period. By using Fitbit smartwatches and an app created by Curebase, a company committed to democratizing access to clinical studies that is also a partner in ECS21, the decentralized clinical trial leverages technology to reach a broader range of volunteer participants. Because it is able to include a more diverse range of veterans – like those who live outside major cities or lack dependable transportation – the study’s results – which are due out in 2022 – will provide deep insight into the potential medicinal uses for CBG to improve one’s sleep.

“In 2019, the VA reported the veteran suicide rate to be 52.3% higher than the general population,” said VCG Founder and former Army Sergeant, Aaron Augustis. “With sleep disorders greatly impacting one’s overall wellbeing, it’s obvious that helping veterans – and everyone – get better sleep is a key solution to the battle to end the veteran suicide crisis.”

Similar to the VCG, Metta Medical’s mission is to destigmatize cannabis use and encourage additional research into the plant’s possible medicinal benefits.

“As a former US Navy veteran, I deeply empathize with those who carry the scars of war,” adds Metta Medical Founder, Chris Emerson. “I can see no better use for scientific study than to advance our understanding of how to use this natural plant to make effective, safe medicines.”

The Veterans Cannabis Group’s policy work has long focused on improving both state and federal-level governmental understanding and acceptance of cannabis’s medicinal uses. In 2017, for example, VCG Founder Aaron Augustis visited Capitol Hill to speak on cannabis’s potential uses upon invitation from Washington D.C. leadership, including representatives from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. More recently, beginning in 2019, the VCG provided veteran-level support to help successfully pass 2020’s California Senate Bill 34, an initiative designed to ease access to medicinal cannabis for those in need.

Air Force Veteran and VCG Co-founder and Board Member, Jeremy Freitas concludes, “The ECS21 study represents the Veterans Cannabis Group’s ever-present commitment to driving forward the global medicinal cannabis movement by adding to a shared body of scientific knowledge into the many curative possibilities cannabis offers while also serving the men and women who so bravely served our nation.”

Bay Area’s Leading Integrative Wellness Clinic Celebrates Five Years of Better Health

Truspine San Francisco Chiropractic and Acupuncture

The human body is a marvelous creation, and it is our job to keep it fit and happy to ensure that we live out our best life.

San Francisco chiropractic and acupuncture clinic Truspine has been helping Bay Area residents achieve better health for half a decade. To celebrate five years of wellness, Truspine is proud to announce that it has expanded the range of services it offers from its newly renovated North Beach-Telegraph Hill location.

To complement its sought-after chiropractic and acupuncture services, Truspine now offers extracorporeal shockwave therapy, or Shockwave Therapy. Using precisely targeted acoustic waves, shockwave therapy stimulates exactly the tissues responsible for chronic pain and poor circulation. It provides significant relief from chronic conditions such as bursitis, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and plantar fasciitis.

Truspine now also provides a cutting-edge Laser Therapy to enhance the healing of damaged tissue and the production of cortisol, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation and pain. Each painless treatment takes less than 15 minutes, and is appropriate both for new conditions, like those arising from athletic activity, and chronic ones.

The new systems represent a new chapter for Truspine, which built its reputation on therapies that rely more on tradition than technology. Furthermore, the clinic recently welcomed celebrated sports acupuncturist Jeffrey Callinan to its team of experienced professionals to help facilitate the recommendation of the new therapies.

But as it happens, shockwave therapy and laser therapy are perfect in keeping with Truspine’s philosophy: encouraging the body’s natural healing capacity to bring about optimal health. As Clinic Director Supreet Shah puts it, “The human body is a marvelous creation, and it is our job to keep it fit and happy to ensure that we live out our best life.”

To learn how the Truspine team can help you reduce pain, regain mobility, and achieve new levels of wellness, please contact the clinic at 415-421-1115 or visit them on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and at their website at https://www.truspinesf.com/.
