Imaging for Neuromuscular Disorders in Clinical Trials, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Regardless of the etiology of the muscle disease, the measurable changes that can be seen through imaging have a great deal of commonality — there is often inflammation, fatty infiltration, muscle atrophy and fibrosis.

Neuromuscular disorders affect the neuromuscular system and affect the nerves that control the muscles, the muscles themselves and the interface between the nerves and the muscles. These disorders include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), muscular dystrophy, myositis, spinal muscular atrophy, amongst others. Many of these diseases are genetic, such as duchenne muscular dystrophy, while others, such as sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM) are idiopathic autoimmune inflammatory myopathies.

There are currently no cures for any of these diseases. Regardless of the etiology of the muscle disease, the measurable changes that can be seen through imaging have a great deal of commonality — there is often inflammation, fatty infiltration, muscle atrophy and fibrosis. Many of these characteristics can be quantified through imaging, and this webinar will discuss how to apply different imaging techniques to make these measurements in the context of a clinical trial.

Join Jonathan Riek, PhD, VP, Musculoskeletal & Metabolic Imaging, Philips BioTel Research in a live webinar on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 1pm EST to learn about the importance of choosing the right imaging modality for clinical trials of neuromuscular disorders.

Preclinical Models for Microbiome Research in Oncology and Inflammatory Diseases, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

This presentation will focus specifically on applications related to the use of specific-pathogen free and germ-free mice as preclinical models.

Even if the causality is not always established, a microbial imbalance or dysbiosis are being increasingly linked to several diseases, including gastrointestinal and dermal diseases, metabolic disorders, CNS pathologies and cancer. Furthermore, the microbiome has been shown to influence the efficacy of immunotherapy and chemotherapeutic agents and the metabolism of drugs. Based on preclinical and clinical studies, different strategies (e.g., fecal material, defined consortium, single strain) are adopted to modulate the composition of the microbiome and exploit its immunogenicity to treat diseases in first line treatment or to circumvent primary resistance to standard of care.

Owing to their scientific and technological expertise, Oncodesign and Taconic propose tailor-made strategies to clients for investigating the safety/efficacy of their microbiome-based therapeutics. This presentation will focus specifically on applications related to the use of specific-pathogen free and germ-free mice as preclinical models.

It will be a unique opportunity to interactively discuss, debate and have questions answered about how current in vivo preclinical models meet the needs of microbiome research and innovation while outlining their limitations and the challenges still to be overcome in this growing field.

Join Sylvie Maubant, Head of Study & Research Unit – In Vivo Sciences Department, Oncodesign; and Ivan Gladwyn-Ng, Field Application Scientist, Taconic in a live webinar on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK) to gain deeper insight into preclinical models for evaluating microbiome products.

Biotech Company Pasithea Therapeutics Founders on Entrepreneurship in Science

News Image

The founders of Pasithea Therapeutics, a new biotech company built to develop new treatments for mental health issues, recently spoke on entrepreneurship in science. The company was founded by Stanford University’s Professor Lawrence Steinman, now Executive Director, and Dr. Tiago Reis Marques, current CEO formerly of King’s College of London. Pasithea operates in-clinic in the UK, where research helmed by Marques is constantly being conducted to develop new treatments.

“In building a new company we wanted to do research and drug development, but also knew that an on-the-ground infrastructure was critical to both our work and our business,” said Steinman. “We’re thrilled to be working with I.V. Doc® in the US and Zen Healthcare in the UK to help our company earn profitability quicker than it would have otherwise.”

As the world continues to be shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic and the number of people suffering from mental health issues rises worldwide, Pasithea aims to provide relief to those in need. The biotech company reports that the size of the depression and anxiety treatment markets is expected to rise to $19.2 billion in 2027, and that mental disorders will lead to a $16 trillion loss to the global economy between 2010 and 2030.

Marques added, “I am happy to be working with partners to gain on-the-ground experience in treating mental health, as it will offer invaluable insight into my research. I truly think this strategy is best not just for our profitability, but will ultimately allow me and my team to produce the best research possible.”

On September 15th, the company became tradable on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the symbol “KTTA”, with warrants available as “KTTAW.” 4,800,000 units of this stock were made available at $5.00 each, after the company raised approximately $24.0 million on the public market.

About Pasithea Therapeutics:

Pasithea Therapeutics Corp. is a biotechnology company focused on the research and discovery of new and effective treatments for psychiatric and neurological disorders. Its biotech operations will focus on developing drugs that target the pathophysiology underlying such disorders rather than symptomatic treatments, with the goal of developing new pharmacological agents that display significant advantages over conventional therapies with respect to efficacy and tolerability.

The company will also be working by providing on-the-ground treatments to help better understand and meet the needs of patients. Through clinics in the United Kingdom and at-home services in the United States, Pasithea will gain deeper knowledge on the effects of Ketamine IVs to treat depression. This innovative new practice is still currently being researched within the medical field, but has shown great promise in preliminary studies.

iTherapy Releases InnerVoice Unreal App Powered by Epic Unreal Engine

InnerVoice Unreal was created using technology from Epic Unreal Engine.

Learn how to talk and express emotions by watching your animated avatar.

iTherapy, LLC just released an “Unreal” edutainment app for people with autism, funded by Epic Megagrant and powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine technology. In collaboration with Elara Systems, iTherapy has created InnerVoice Unreal a comprehensive communication tool that helps children with autism and other communication challenges learn speaking, reading, and writing skills, using their own customized 3D avatars and the latest voice-synthesis technology.

InnerVoice Unreal builds on iTherapy’s existing InnerVoice app for iOS, with both apps using video modeling — an evidence-based intervention tool for children with autism. An avatar models talking, typing, and facial expressions, and teaches children with or without autism to recognize the relationships between speech, text, and the world around them.

Thanks to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine platform, the new InnerVoice Unreal app for Android allows users to create their own unique 3D character. Kids can now choose from a variety of genders, cultural backgrounds, and looks — a significant addition when helping children identify with and maintain interest in their avatar. Importantly, Epic’s technology, Elara’s VR technology expertise, and InnerVoice’s 3D animation has also provided a whole new level of accuracy when it comes to the avatars’ word articulation and variety of micro-expressions when conveying an expanded range of emotions.

As Lois Jean Brady, co-creator or InnerVoice and speech-language pathologist explains, “This precision is crucial, as it means you can watch the avatar closely when it’s expressing anger or speaking a phrase you’ve typed — over and over if you want — in order to learn what that emotion looks like or how your mouth moves while saying the word.” The iTherapy team recognizes the need is greater than ever for developing children to have access to this sort of modeling, when so many teachers and speech-language pathologists have to obscure their faces with masks.

Literacy skills are also a huge asset to any child on the autism spectrum, and in a digital age, literacy can grant them access to a new world of communication for the rest of their life. InnerVoice Unreal provides a new literacy section, in which the child’s avatar demonstrates how to pronounce a large number of letter sounds (such as short vowels, long vowels, and consonants). Amazon’s cloud computing provides the cutting-edge speech-synthesis and procedural “lip syncing” necessary to ensure the sound syncs precisely with the animation, creating an authentic representation of speech.

Although InnerVoice Unreal is powered by sophisticated animation and AI technology, iTherapy has worked hard to ensure the app is simple to use and entertaining for kids of all age groups. Bright colours, bold graphics, numerous features, and endless scope for interaction mean that InnerVoice Unreal is both a communication tool and teacher, capable of keeping children occupied for hours of educational fun.

About iTherapy, LLC: iTherapy, LLC is a San Francisco Bay Area company that develops engaging immersive technology which increases quality of life for individuals with communication challenges such as autism. Since 2011, iTherapy has provided thousands of individuals with evidence-based solutions to everyday communication challenges, both through its innovative software and its medical speech therapy clinic, where its speech-language pathologists provide services to a variety of clients. iTherapy’s InnerVoice app has won multiple awards, including the Mensa Intellectual Benefits to Society Award.

About Epic Unreal Engine: The world’s most advanced real-time 3D creation tool for photoreal visuals and immersive experiences. For more than two decades, Unreal Engine has evolved to keep creators on the cutting edge of real-time 3D technology.

About Elara Systems: Based in Northern California, Elara is a strategic creative agency that develops digital content for medical and industrial markets across the globe, using virtual reality, mixed and augmented reality, 3D animation, and video.

Santé Center for Healing’s Expert Commentary on the Reports on the Increase in Alcohol Use by Women

Some of our female clients resort to drinking to cope with daily stressors, which have been magnified over the past year and a half. As healthcare providers, we need to raise awareness of the health risks associated with drinking so that women can make informed decisions about their alcohol use.

Excessive alcohol use poses both health and safety risks to females, as their physical health is adversely impacted by heavy drinking, including risks for hypertension, cancer, stroke, liver disease, and alcohol-impaired accidents. There has been a troubling increase in consumption of alcohol among women in recent years.(1)

  • Approximately 13% of adult women report binge drinking and on average do so 4 times a month, consuming 5 drinks per binge.
  • About 18% of women of child-bearing age binge drink.
  • In 2019, 4% of women overall and 8% of women aged 18 to 25 years had an alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use can negatively affect women’s mental health. Women have twice the risk of men for depression and anxiety, and heavy alcohol use exacerbates depression, anxiety, and insomnia.(2)

“Excessive alcohol use is a common response to coping with stress,” says Dr. Melissa Pennington, Santé’s Medical Director. “In addition to their jobs, women are more likely than men to shoulder the burdens of housework, child rearing and caregiving. Though traditionally the female gender role is correlated with a higher rate of abstinence, there has been a recent shift in social norms regarding female alcohol consumption. Some of our female clients resort to drinking to cope with daily stressors, which have been magnified over the past year and a half. As healthcare providers, we need to raise awareness of the health risks associated with drinking so that women can make informed decisions about their alcohol use.”

Biological differences make women more susceptible to the long-term negative health effects of alcohol compared with men, leading to alcohol-related medical problems after shorter duration and at lower levels of consumption compared to men.(3) Alcohol attributable cardiovascular disease, diabetes and severe alcoholic liver problems are more common in females. Women are more vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol and that volumetric brain loss and cognitive dysfunction develop more quickly in women than men.(3)

Drinking is associated with breast cancer in women, even at low levels of consumption. Studies demonstrate that women who consume about 1 drink per day have a 5 to 9 percent higher chance of developing breast cancer than women who do not drink at all.(4) It is estimated that one-third of breast cancer cases could be prevented if women did not drink alcohol, were physically active, and maintained a healthy weight. Besides breast cancer, alcohol consumption also increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon.(2)

Drinking affects women’s mental health differently than men’s. Heavy drinking and alcohol dependent women are more likely to have comorbid psychiatric disorders than men. Compared to men, they are more likely to have an anxiety disorder, increased intensity of depressive symptoms and alcohol cravings. Women are also less likely than men to receive alcohol-related services in their lifetime.(3)

Dr. Pennington also emphasized importance of getting treatment in a timely fashion. “Many women drink for the intent of stress relief, boredom or social connection, but they are unaware of the implications of what is truly happening. If drinking is preoccupying your day or your loved one, it would be time to reach out for help. The beginning of a successful recovery always starts with a single step.”

Operation Homefront to distribute holiday meals to more than 15,000 military families nationwide

News Image

“Thanks to our generous partners, Holiday Meals for Military® allows us to provide much-needed support to military families so they can enjoy the holidays and a “thank you” from the communities they’ve worked so hard to protect.” – Brig Gen (ret) John I Pray Jr, Operation Homefront President and CEO

Operation Homefront’s Holiday Meals for Military program has launched with the goal of putting meals on the tables of more than 15,000 American military families by December 17, 2021. The program, which is in its 12th year, provides junior- and mid-grade enlisted military families with all the grocery items necessary to prepare a traditional holiday meal, helping to ease their financial hardships and to make the holiday season brighter for those who sacrifice so much on behalf of all Americans. The national nonprofit expects to achieve a key milestone this holiday season of serving its 550,000th military family member since the program officially began in 2010.

Thanks to the generous support of partners including Chobani, P&G, Grunt Style Foundation, Lockheed Martin, Food Lion, Bob Hope Legacy, San Antonio Shoemakers (SAS), and others, meals are being distributed at more than 80 events across the country this holiday season, starting with Fairchild, Washington and ending at Travis Air Force Base, California. This valuable program connects civilians to military families helping them start strong and stay strong this holiday season and beyond.

“Military families are often far from their loved ones during the holiday season, making it difficult for them to enjoy the traditions many Americans look forward to,” said Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., President and CEO of Operation Homefront. “Thanks to the unwavering support of our many generous partners, our highly-regarded Holiday Meals for Military® program allows us to provide much-needed support to our military families so they can enjoy the holidays and a tangible “thank you” from the communities they have worked so hard to protect.”

Chobani is a pivotal partner of Operation Homefront and its programs, including Holiday Meals for Military. Chobani is dedicated to making high-quality and nutritious food accessible to more people, while elevating its communities and making the world a healthier place.

“As a proud American company, Chobani is honored to partner with Operation Homefront,” said Peter McGuinness, Chobani President and Chief Operating Officer. “Since 2018, Chobani has donated more than $2.25 million through our charity product, Hero Batch. This is a special red, white and blue yogurt we designed specifically to shine a spotlight on the U.S. military in stores all across the country and to raise money and support for military families in need all year long.”

In addition, Chobani allocated donations to help military families directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in California and Texas.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) joins Operation Homefront for the 6th year to provide an assortment of useful household and personal care items for the families attending our distribution events across the country. This ties to the Start Strong Stay Strong initiative launched with P&G earlier this year to brighten the lives of those that serve our nation and their families.

“P&G has been committed to supporting the military community for over 150 years and we are proud to partner with Operation Homefront,” said Marc Knowles, Global Military Team Leader at Procter & Gamble. “Through our partnership, we have seen how their programs impact the lives of our nation’s military families and together, we are steadfast in our commitment to help these families start strong in their communities and stay strong throughout their journeys.”

For the 5th year in a row, thanks to a donation from Bob Hope Legacy, any military families on the waitlist will be moved up to ensure they also receive a meal. Bob and Dolores Hope’s enduring wish to take care of the military and their families lives on through this impactful contribution.

Registration is now open for eligible military families to receive holiday meals nationwide, including events in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX, Tampa, FL, Washington D.C., San Diego, CA, and Norfolk, VA. The annual program will conclude on December 17. To see all Holiday Meals for Military® event locations and to register, visit OperationHomefront.org/holiday-meals-for-military.

In addition to distributing meals in November and December, Operation Homefront holds Holiday Meals for Military events throughout the year for Easter, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and more.

The Holiday Meals for Military program was born from a chance encounter in a supermarket in Utica, New York near Fort Drum. A soldier, his wife, and infant were in line with a handful of grocery items for their Thanksgiving meal. At the register, the family realized they were short money and began to remove items from their cart. A Beam Suntory executive was in line behind them, and he paid the $12 total for their groceries. In talking to the family, the executive learned the soldier had just returned from deployment and was having trouble providing for his family due to some unexpected expenses.

From that chance meeting, Holiday Meals for Military was born. A pilot program was launched to distribute 500 holiday meal kits to military families. Since 2010, the program has grown every year. The growth is due to the generous support of many sponsors who provide funding, food items, venues, storage, shipping and valuable volunteer hours.

This year’s Holiday Meals for Military® program will comply with all federal, state, and local COVID-19 guidelines and deliver meals in a safe, socially distant drive-through format. Meals will be distributed as traditional meal kits or in the form of a gift card, giving families the opportunity to purchase their own holiday meal contents.

For more information on how to volunteer or donate, visit OperationHomefront.org/holiday-meals-for-military.
