Revere Health Reduces Medicare Spending by More Than $12 Million in 2020

News Image

Our commitment to value-based care remains steadfast, and the numbers show that we are meeting our objectives, even in the most difficult of times.

Revere Health, the largest independent multispecialty physician group in Utah, reduced health care spending for its Medicare patients by more than $12 million in 2020 as part of its participation in the federal government’s Medicare initiative known as the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) Model. This is according to data recently released from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the 2020 performance year.

2020 was the sixth consecutive performance year that Revere Health has achieved savings for its Medicare patients in Advance Payment Models (APM). Over that span, Revere Health has averaged savings of approximately $11 million per year for its Medicare patients from 2015 to 2020. Revere Health is a part of the Next Generation ACO Model that is reserved for ACOs with experience in coordinating care for patient populations and that are willing to assume the highest levels of risk and reward among Medicare’s shared savings initiatives.

“The results we achieved in 2020 are highly impressive given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Revere Health CEO Scott Barlow. “By quickly pivoting and remaining true to our mission, we continued to serve patients and provide the high-quality, low-cost care that is our hallmark despite the worldwide pandemic that impacted so many healthcare organizations.”

Other highlights from the CMS 2020 Next Generation ACO performance report include:

  •     A per member per year savings of $776.79 relative to the expected cost if the patient was seen by any other provider in Utah.
  •     A 5.8% reduction in anticipated costs of care.
  •     A savings increase of more than $7 million compared to 2019.

Overall, Revere Health has achieved a total gross savings of approximately $66 million since 2015.

“As Utah’s population continues to grow and change, we have a responsibility to ensure residents have access to affordable, quality healthcare,” said Revere Health President and cardiologist Scott Bingham, MD. “Our commitment to value-based care remains steadfast, and the numbers show that we are meeting our objectives, even in the most difficult of times.”

ACOs are groups of hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers that join together to better coordinate care for their patients. The Next Generation ACO Model, which requires healthcare providers to take on additional financial risk, will soon be retired by CMS, so Revere Health is actively pursuing other programs that will allow them to continue their mission to transform healthcare. Revere Health also works with many commercial payers and implements the same quality and cost-savings efforts for all its patients.

Revere Health’s mission of “your health above all else” is accomplished by delivering the right care at the right time in the right place.

About Revere Health

Revere Health is the largest independent multispecialty physician group in Utah and employs more than 200 physicians and 190 advanced practitioners. Founded in 1969, Revere Health has grown to include more than 100 clinics in both urban and rural areas throughout Utah and Nevada. Revere Health providers offer complete healthcare at every stage of life with multiple family practice locations and 30 medical specialties. As the first Accountable Care Organization accredited by Medicare in Utah, Revere Health is a leader in value-based care, which focuses on improving scientific measurements of health outcomes and lowering overall costs of care. Revere Health takes a unique, patient-oriented approach to healthcare.

Montreal’s ‘Lifeline’ a Local Voice for ‘National Addictions Awareness Week’

Lifeline, a non-sectarian recovery and prevention center that offers hope and healing to all affected by addiction, today presented its addiction counseling services in advance of National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW), an initiative of the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) that runs from November 21 to 27.

Lifeline’s team of social workers, therapists, additions counsellors and youth counsellors offer a range of innovative treatment options and comprehensive at-risk youth programs. Where appropriate, referrals are made to other professionals and agencies. People suffering from substance (alcohol and narcotics) and behavioral (gambling, eating, sex, co-dependency etc.) addictions and their families are guided through a healing and recovery process. With a few exceptions, services are free-of-charge and no one is denied service based on ability to pay. Lifeline is an independent non-profit organization that receives zero government support and is entirely funded through the generosity of the community.

Lifeline applies a distinctly progressive approach to addiction services:

  • Services are immediate / No wait times – Service level of a private for-profit facility
  • Family focus – Counseling provided to partners, parents and siblings of addicts, permitting families to heal together
  • Outpatient model for treating addictions – Versus on-location rehabilitation center
  • High success rate – Unique screening, holistic approach and extensive after-care proven to help overwhelming majority of clients

“The Covid-19 pandemic has been an awful time for addiction – people suffering have been pushed towards addiction while existing addicts have experienced worsening despair,” says Rabbi Benyamin Bresinger, Director, Lifeline. “Addiction is complex – a spiritual, emotional and physical disorder that often stems from isolation and loneliness. While their problems do not usually begin with drugs, alcohol or other addictive behaviors, addicts often reach for self-sabotaging behaviors as temporary relief from their pain and isolation.”

“Our vision is founded on the belief that helping people develop intimate relationships with themselves and others is the solution to addiction. We support our friends at the CSSA on the occasion of NAAW. Our message to the community is simple: If you or anyone you love is suffering from addiction, contact us. We are here to help,” adds Rabbi Bresinger.

As High School Seniors Finalize College Applications, the National Conscience Month Essay Contest Offers a $2,000 Scholarship

Scholarship for High School Seniors

“Teenagers have the capacity to tap into their unlimited wisdom and creativity through their Conscience–building self-confidence and response-ability as they prepare to leave home for the first time and share their light with the world.” — Leonard Perlmutter, educator, author, yoga scientist

As many high school seniors complete their college application essays, the American Meditation Institute invites them to think more deeply and submit an essay to the 3rd annual National Conscience Month Essay Contest. This year one high school senior will receive a $2,000 scholarship toward higher education for the best essay that clearly explains how they experimented with using (or ignoring) the wisdom of their brilliant conscience in their decision-making process.

When faced with the prospect of leaving home to go to college, learning a trade, taking a gap year, or going straight to work, high school graduates need confidence and skills to enter young adulthood. The capacity for self-reliance is not found in the relentless onslaught of information from mobile devices, cable outlets, emails, and social media feeds. Today’s students, and the rest of society, have not been taught how to manage their thoughts in this frenetic environment.

According to Leonard Perlmutter, originator of National Conscience Month and author of the new book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, “At present there is no educational curriculum focused on teaching students exactly how the mind makes a decision, every time, and how to use the Conscience as a practical resource in this process. This national essay contest for teenagers at a critical moment in their personal development, will establish an awareness of the positive value of regularly using their Conscience as a trusted guide to knowing what’s to be done and what’s not to be done.”

Perlmutter’s book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, provides a clear and accessible explanation of how the mind works and offers practical tools for readers to experiment with this knowledge. The Conscience is one of four functions of the mind, and the key is learning how to coordinate them as a group in order to make choices that lead to lasting happiness and fulfillment, rather than instant gratification. The book can easily be adapted into educational curricula at the middle and high school levels, and beyond.

High school seniors can enter the scholarship contest now, and submissions are accepted through January 28, 2022. The contest winner will be announced the first week in February, 2022.

The mission of National Conscience Month is to foster a national conversation that inspires individuals of all ages and political affiliations, governments, school systems, faith leaders, non-profits, community organizations, corporations, believers, atheists and agnostics across the United States and the world community to experiment with using their Conscience in choosing their thoughts, words and deeds. This month-long observance is the perfect time to clarify our individual and collective vision by using the Conscience as an inspired and trustworthy guide to making better decisions that can resolve the seemingly unresolvable.

Paso Robles Dentist Reports ‘Habits That are Bad for Teeth’

Paso Robles dentist

If nail biting is causing damage or concern, the Paso Robles dentist advises discussing the matter with the family doctor and dentist.

Who thought nail biting would be bad for their teeth? “It is,” says Paso Robles dentist, Lisa Lu Davis, DMD. “Nail biting is only one bad habit that can cause dental problems.” There are many more habits that can damage teeth and gums and Dr. Davis has put together a list of those habits as well as some steps to take to break the bad habits.

Along with nail biting, common habits that can damage teeth include using our teeth as tools. Holding something in the mouth to free the hands can lead to cracking or breaking teeth. Tearing a package open with our teeth is highly common. Nail biting, a habit often associated with being nervous or anxious, can not only cause dental problems, it is destructive to cuticles, fingernails and can potentially cause infections.

If nail biting is causing damage or concern, the Paso Robles dentist advises discussing the matter with the family doctor and dentist.

Other bad habits include:

  • Thumb sucking, a natural activity for young children, helps babies and toddlers feel secure but excessive or intense sucking can cause problems with the roof of the mouth and newly forming teeth. Discuss thumb sucking with the family dentist and pediatrician.
  • Brushing too hard irritates gums and can damage teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and brush for two minutes at least twice a day.
  • Clenching and grinding, more common while sleeping, can chip and crack teeth along with creating muscle and joint pain.. Wearing a tooth guard at night can help, and relaxation practices during the day can also help bring more awareness to stopping the habit.
  • Chewing ice, especially cubes and chunks, can break and crack teeth. It’s feels nice and cooling to chew up the ice left in a cold summer beverage. Let the ice dissolve in your mouth instead of chewing it. The compulsion to chew ice may indicate the medical condition, pagophagia, that is associated with anemia. Consult with a medical doctor if you feel compelled to chew ice.
  • Snacking between meals without brushing, or at minimum, rinsing the mouth, can lead to cavities because food particles attract cavity causing bacteria. Sometimes a snack is too good to pass up, or there’s a long time between meals and you’re hungry. If you need a snack, choose low fat and low sugar, brush or floss if you can, or at least drink a glass of water to wash away food particles.

Germs can enter through the mouth when we eat. Bacteria is always present, even in the healthiest and cleanest mouth. “Good dental care is also a habit,” said the Paso Robles dentist, “but it’s a good habit that helps keep germs under control and have a healthy mouth.”

Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. See your family dentist for regular check-ups, and especially at the first sign of any problem.

Dr. Lisa Lu Davis attained her Dental Medicine Doctorate (DMD), from Temple University in 1999. Graduating at the top of her class, she received awards in radiology, treatment planning and restorative clinics and was honored with the Hahnemann award for her research in Sjogren Syndrome. Dr. Davis has been practicing dentistry on California’s Central Coast since 2007 from her Paso Robles office.
