Landmark Boston IVF Fertility Research Study Reinforces Value of Prompt Treatment of Unexplained Infertility

The results of a 2021 follow-up study have reinforced the continued effectiveness of fertility treatments for individuals and couples who wish to build a family and have received a medical diagnosis of unexplained infertility.

Researchers at Boston IVF, with Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and Harvard Medical School, contacted patients with unexplained infertility who participated in the landmark FASTT Trial between 2001 and 2005 with a goal to learn more about the occurrence of pregnancies subsequent to the trial and initial treatment for unexplained infertility.

The follow-up study is of paramount relevance to clinicians and patients alike, according to lead author Denis Vaughan, MD – reproductive endocrinologist and Director of Clinical Research at Boston IVF and Harvard Medical School Instructor.

“One of the primary questions clinicians receive from patients is ‘If I have unexplained infertility and need infertility treatment for my first child, does that mean I can never have a child without treatment in the future?’ Until this follow-up study, we could not answer that question,” said Dr. Vaughan.

The initial FASTT Trial, led by Richard Reindollar, MD of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and co-investigators at Boston IVF, studied 503 couples of various ages who were unable to become pregnant naturally after trying to conceive for one year. The results of the National Institutes of Health-funded trial concluded that women aged 21-39 who were fast-tracked to IVF after not becoming pregnant with less-aggressive Clomid/IUI treatments had increased pregnancy rates, a shorter time to pregnancy, and a decrease in cost of care.

Overall, 64% of couples had at least one live birth during the FASTT Trial.

“We thought that unexplained infertility was caused by a disorder yet to be identified. The fact that the vast majority of couples became pregnant in treatment from FASTT and also become pregnant again after FASTT suggests that unexplained infertility is just that – unexplained,” said Dr. Reindollar.

The 2021 follow-up study, published in the leading journal Fertility and Sterility, was the subject of a recent press release by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Utilizing key data obtained from 286 of the original 503 couples, results of the study were overwhelmingly positive for patients.

Only 6.6% couples with unexplained infertility did not have a child over the course of their reproductive lifetime – and almost two-thirds of couples were able to have a child without any additional treatment following the trial.

According to Dr. Vaughan, the study has several positive messages for patients.

“The overwhelming majority of patients with unexplained infertility will ultimately have a baby and most will not require infertility treatment for subsequent children. Additionally, moving to treatment sooner allows for larger families, which is the goal of our patients. Lastly, it highlights the importance of insurance coverage for infertility treatment.”

New Biotech Company Pasithea Therapeutics to Specialize in Developing Treatment for Psychiatric Disorders

News Image

Pasithea Therapeutics, a new biotech company at the forefront of creating new and effective treatments for both psychiatric and neurological disorders, has begun clinical operations in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The company is led by CEO, Dr. Tiago Reis Marques of the King’s College of London, and Executive Chairman, Professor Lawrence Steinman of Stanford University. With innovative technologies, Pasithea Therapeutics aims to help the mental health crisis that has been brought on by COVID-19, as many people struggle to meet their mental health needs.

Between August of 2020 and February of 2021, the CDC reports that the percentage of adults who recently experienced symptoms of anxiety or depression increased from 36.4% to 41.5%. In fact, they further noted that the number of people with unmet mental health needs increased from 9.2% to 11.7% largely in individuals 18-29 years old. Although Healthline reports a decreasing incidence of COVID- 19 cases in the US, ranging right below 120,000, the lasting trauma on individuals poses a greater threat.

To combat these changes, Pasithea has begun clinical operations in partnership with Zen Healthcare, which operates three clinics in London, and I.V. Doc®, the leading operator of mobile clinics in the United States. These operations will help generate additional funding for research into new medications for treating mental health. They are led by Dr. Tiago Reis Marques, a psychiatric researcher with decades of experience investigating the biological mechanism of psychiatric disorders. Alongside Dr. Marques, Pasithea is chaired by Dr. Lawrence Steinman, a professor within the department of neurology at Stanford University. Dr. Steinman has successfully founded new biotech companies and brought drugs to the market in the past.

“As the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on both our bodies and minds continue to be discovered, Pasithea hopes to find new ways of treating mental health during this urgent crisis,” said Steinman. “We are pleased to be able to offer in-person clinical services through our partners in the US and UK, and Dr. Marques and his team are hard at work developing new medications for longer-term solutions to this growing problem.”

About Pasithea:

Pasithea Therapeutics Corp. is a biotechnology company focused on the research and discovery of new and effective treatments for psychiatric and neurological disorders. The biotech operations will focus on developing drugs to target the pathophysiology underlying psychiatric and neurological disorders. Our goal is to develop new pharmacological agents displaying significant advantages over conventional therapies.

The Company’s secondary operations focus on establishing mental-health clinics in the United Kingdom and in the United States. The Company’s operations in these countries will involve providing intravenous infusions of ketamine to patients who are eligible. Pasithea has partnered with two successful clinics for immediate exposure in locations across California, New York and London. In the US, Pasithea will operate through an at-home treatment model. Individuals struggling with mental health disorders are often homebound for extended periods of time. In providing an in-home treatment model, Pasithea works to break down the barriers existing between practitioners and patients. With great efforts to expand nationwide, Pasithea offers a faster, more receptive model to ensure patients are never dissuaded from seeking treatment.

Inaugural Benefit Concert Dinner With Proceeds To Support Henry Williams Love Foundation’s Emergency Services and Unplanned Loss Program Fund

News Image

“COVID-19 has taken so much from so many, and families are facing some incredible circumstances just like my Daddy did when he lost his parents,” says President and CEO Kyla Williams.

Henry Williams Love Foundation (HWLF) will host its inaugural benefit concert dinner on Saturday, December 11, 2021, starting at 6 pm at the ETA Creative Arts Center located at 7558 S. South Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60619. 100% of the proceeds from the benefit concert will go to their Emergency Services and Unplanned Loss Program Fund.

HWLF is a 501c3 organization that provides short-term supportive services, advocacy, and policy support to youth and families in need. The organization’s namesake, Henry Williams, lost his father at nine years old and then his mother at 11 years old. “Losing his parents at a very young age was devastating to Henry and his three siblings,” says Board Treasurer Joseph Williams. “As such, my father always demonstrated the greatest capacity for love to those who experience such unplanned loss, unexpected needs, and require advocacy. That is the foundation this organization is built upon, and we are carrying out his values at HWLF.”

The HWLF Emergency Services and Unplanned Loss Program provides direct financial support to over 50 families in Metropolitan Chicago, Suburban Cook, and Kankakee Counties each year who need a dose of love to help them through challenging times. “COVID-19 has taken so much from so many, and families are facing some incredible circumstances just like my Daddy did when he lost his parents,” says President and CEO Kyla Williams. “The requests for help far exceed our fund’s capacity, especially around the need for acute mental health services triggered by the pandemic.” The families helped by HWLF receive direct financial support for emergencies or burial support directly to a funeral home for an unplanned loss. All families receive referral-based case management services. “As school teachers, we hear about so many families in need and feel so helpless sometimes,” says Board Chair Rhea Bickham. “But through the HWLF Emergency Services and Unplanned Loss program fund, some families are getting not only financial support, but case management support that is typically not available to them, and it is making a difference.”

Tickets for the benefit concert dinner are $25 and are available for purchase at https://bit.ly/hwlfbenefitconcert21. If people cannot attend the benefit concert but still want to support this effort, they can send donations directly through the HWLF website at https://henrywilliamslove.org/donations/.

Azalea Health Shares Predictions for Rural Healthcare IT in 2022

News Image

In the face of new and long-standing challenges, rural providers in particular will have an opportunity to adapt in ways that will position their organizations for future success and stability.

Azalea Health Innovations Inc. (Azalea Health or Azalea), a leading provider of cloud-based patient management and health IT solutions, today released its predictions for the new realities of rural healthcare in 2022 and how IT solutions can help them rise to the challenges. Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare system is in a precarious position as labor shortages and ever-increasing cyberattacks threaten hospitals’ recovery from COVID-19. However, there are new opportunities for providers to embrace consumerism and address social determinants of health (SDOH).

“For many providers, the pandemic has been a catalyst for changes that likely needed to happen anyways,” said Baha Zeidan, CEO and co-founder of Azalea Health. “In the face of new and long-standing challenges, rural providers in particular will have an opportunity to adapt in ways that will position their organizations for future success and stability. Solutions enabling digital transformation will play a key role here, and providers will need to make strategic investments that reap returns for years to come, particularly in cybersecurity, analytics and cloud-based platforms.”

Hospitals Will Need to Simplify Workflows In Response to Staffing Shortages

Two years of COVID-19 have taken their toll. As burned out healthcare professionals continue to leave the workforce in 2022, traveling nurses will be in high demand, particularly in rural areas. However, rural providers will need to compete with larger and wealthier hospitals, whose recruiters will poach staff with lucrative offers. To ease the strain on the remaining staff and stem the tide of burnout, hospitals will need to simplify their digital workflows. This will reduce the time staff need to spend with the hospital IT systems and allow them to spend more time with their patients. Meanwhile, data analytics will enable staff to focus their limited time on the patients at greatest risk.

Ransomware and Other Cyberattacks Get Worse

2021 is on track to be the worst year ever for ransomware attacks on healthcare. 2022 will likely be worse. Healthcare is an ideal target: with lives on the line, providers are more likely to pay ransoms to restore IT services, and private health data is lucrative to sell on the dark web. Ransomware-as-a-service has also made it easier than ever to launch an attack. The potential cost of an attack (the median ransom is $75,000) makes cybersecurity one of the most important investments hospitals should be considering today. That said, rural providers’ lean IT teams as well as limited budgets will constrain their investments, making it critical to invest in health IT platforms that make these critical investments for them with built-in security solutions.

Providers Embrace Influencer Marketing

Whether on TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook, a growing number of providers are finding success with influencer marketing. Doctors that become internet celebrities are often booked for months. This trend has been aided by telehealth, which has enabled healthcare practitioners to see patients outside of their immediate geographic area. As healthcare becomes increasingly consumerized, more providers will make strategic investments in social media as a new form of engagement to attract both patients and fresh talent, particularly in light of the previously mentioned labor shortages facing rural providers.

Health Systems Leverage Technology to Address Health Equity

The pandemic brought new focus on health inequities, as long disadvantaged communities experienced worse outcomes from COVID-19. Rural areas are particularly vulnerable, with high rates of poverty, food deserts, poor infrastructure and limited access to health services. New investments in broadband access in the bipartisan infrastructure bill will help close the digital divide in these areas, allowing more patients to access the benefits of telehealth and patient portals. Meanwhile, data-driven analytics will enable rural providers to better understand the impact of the different social determinants of health (SDOH) on their population, aiding in applying for grants for community benefit programs.

Azalea Health Innovations (Azalea) is on a mission to empower underserved healthcare providers with a health IT platform that improves patient care and profitability. Xerox stood out for its impressive portfolio of apps, software, and services that equip customers to meet the challenges presented when being in the office is not a given.

Keypoint Intelligence, the world’s leading independent provider of testing services and analytical information to the document imaging industry, today announced that Xerox Corporation has won the coveted Buyers Lab (BLI) 2022 Document Imaging Software Line of the Year Award. Given once a year, this prestigious accolade recognizes the vendor that offers the most complete portfolio across the range of document imaging software solution categories that Keypoint Intelligence covers on its bliQ subscription service.

“The pandemic crisis and continuing hybrid work environments have meant that the majority of knowledge workers are away from their offices at least some of the time, but they still need access to critical documents and collaborative workflows to keep the organization running,” said Jamie Bsales, Director of Smart Workplace & Security Analysis at Keypoint Intelligence. “Our study this year paid particular attention to the vendors that best enabled this transition. In this regard, Xerox stood out for its impressive portfolio of apps, software, and services that equip customers to meet the challenges presented when being in the office is not a given.”

To determine the award recipient, Keypoint Intelligence’s experienced analysts consider the imaging software each leading OEM officially sells and supports via its direct and independent sales channels. The vendor’s own products and those from partner ISVs are accounted for in the categories Keypoint Intelligence covers in bliQ Solutions Center: MFP Apps & Connectors, Capture & Workflow, Document Management/ECM, Fleet Management & MPS Tools, Output Management, and others. Another consideration is the variety of offerings in each of those categories to suit the needs of different size organizations, from small businesses to global enterprises.

In the study, Xerox improved upon its past award-winning showings thanks to introductions and acquisitions in key areas. The company and its developer partners have continued the expansion of an unrivaled portfolio of MFP apps, especially those targeted at key vertical markets such as Healthcare, Education, and Retail. Moreover, the handy Xerox Workflow Central solution extends access to select apps to PCs and mobile devices. The wide-ranging XMPie suite delivers a host of content creation and management tools for effective multichannel marketing, while the Xerox DocuShare family of products delivers class-leading, document-centric content management and collaboration abilities. Also of note is the impressive CareAR remote service platform that leverages XR (extended reality) technology to help field-service personnel as well as customers keep equipment operational. And this is all in addition to solutions from the leading document imaging software developers such as ABBYY, Kofax, Pharos, and a host of others.
