Women’s Excellence and the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) invite the public to learn about midwifery during National Midwifery Week, October 4-10. National Midwifery Week was created by the American College of Nurse-Midwives to celebrate and recognize midwives and midwife-led care. From the ACNM, this year’s theme is “Midwives for Equity.” Midwives play a key part in enhancing equity among all populations of the United States. Midwives believe every person has a right to equitable, ethical, accessible, quality health care. The midwifery model of care empowers individuals and communities, creates compassionate partnerships, and personalizes care based upon everyone’s life experiences and knowledge. Women’s Excellence supports the mission of “Midwives for Equity” and aims to educate the community on the tremendous contributions midwives provide to women’s healthcare.
A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse who has graduated from an accredited midwifery education program and has passed a national certification examination. Midwives are trained to monitor the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the pregnancy, labor, and delivery. They provide individualized prenatal care and education, continuous hands-on support during labor, postpartum care, and lactation assistance.
In addition to prenatal care, Women’s Excellence nurse midwives provide a wide range of women’s health services, such as annual exams, birth control, parenting education, family planning, and reproductive health visits. Although the focus is typically on pregnancy and childbirth, the CNMs are medically trained to care for women and girls from adolescence though menopause and beyond.
National Midwifery Week brings women, families, and midwives together to empower women to make informed choices about their health care. The high rate of cesarean sections, skyrocketing health care costs, and misperceptions about midwives and women’s health are among the reasons why the ACNM observes National Midwifery Week each year.
Dr. Jonathan Zaidan, MD, FACOG, President of Women’s Excellence is proud to have a growing team of certified nurse-midwives to support their mission of comprehensive, high-quality care to all women.
“Midwifery care offers a unique and personalized approach to healthcare for women. Nowadays, more and more women desire midwifery-led prenatal services,” says Zaidan. “Our midwives support patient-centered care and aim to fulfill the wants and needs of the patient. The main purpose of our midwifery service is to provide the best personalized care possible for our patients in the safest way.”
Women’s Excellence plans to increase public awareness of National Midwifery Week and the contributions made by midwives through their social media pages and website, http://www.womensexcellence.com.
“As we celebrate National Midwifery Week, we recognize, appreciate, and support the many important contributions of our certified nurse-midwives here at Women’s Excellence!” says Dr. Jonathan Zaidan.
