Jonathan Berger joins the firm with over 25 years’ experience advising public and private healthcare providers on regulatory compliance, transactions, corporate governance and operations. As an outside general counsel supporting clients through critical business decisions, Jonathan serves as a trusted resource in who ensures clients make the right strategic choices for their organizations. Prior to joining Nelson Hardiman, Jonathan served as general counsel for a regional radiology group, a multi-state dental services organization, and spent 12 years with a global, science-led biopharmaceutical business in the outpatient oncology space. Prior to that, Jonathan had also gained valuable practical experience working for national providers in acute care, long-term care and specialty hospitals and rehabilitation with large national providers. “We are excited to have Jonathan’s breadth of knowledge and experience advising different types of healthcare clients,” said Managing Partner Harry Nelson. “His healthcare regulatory and transactional experience made him a compelling addition to our team.”

Shamira Dwarica, a recent law school graduate who worked with Nelson Hardiman while in law school, joins the firm on a full-time basis. Within the firm’s focus on developing versatile attorneys, Shamira brings particular experience in supporting clients in litigation and administrative legal matters, including defense of fraud and abuse allegations in healthcare matters, as well as medical staff and peer review-related work. Her regulatory experience has included corporate practice of medicine compliance, healthcare organizational and professional licensing, as well as compliance with a broader range of federal and California healthcare regulations.

Adella Katz, a recent law school graduate, joins Nelson Hardiman after in-house experience at a Medicare Advantage insurance plan and large hospital system. Adella’s focus includes healthcare privacy and data security compliance, including risk analysis for potential breach notification and other issues relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA), and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) for private healthcare organizations. Adella also brings experience in navigating Stark law and Anti-Kickback Statute issues, and reimbursement maters (including appeals of adverse benefit and overpayment determinations by insurance companies.
