WGO Elects New President and Governing Council for 2021-2023 Term

Professor Guilherme Macedo, MD, PhD, FACG, FASGE, AGAF, FAASLD, was elected as the 2021-2023 President of the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) by the General Assembly during GASTRO 2021 Prague on 10 December 2021.

Prof. Macedo is the Head of the Gastroenterology Department in Centro Hospitalar Universitario de São Joao and University of Porto Faculty of Medicine, Porto, Portugal, which also includes the World Gastroenterology Organisation Gastroenterology and Hepatology Training Center.

Prof. Macedo has served on both the Governing Council and Executive Committee as Treasurer (2015-2019), WGOF Chair (2019-2021) and President-elect (2019-2021). As Treasurer, he was also Chair of the Finance Committee for those terms.

He has served as the Director of the WGO Porto Gastroenterology and Hepatology Training Center since its inauguration in 2015 (and has been a member of the Training Center Committee in this capacity since then).

He has additionally served on several WGO committees as a member of the Train the Trainer Committee (2009-2021) including serving as Faculty at various Train the Trainers workshops, the Hepatology Interest Group (2009-2021), the WDHD Committee (2013 and 2018), Scientific Program Committee (2017-2019) and the WGO Foundation board (2017-2019).

He is currently also President of the WGO Member Society, Sociedade Portuguesa de Gastrenterología, since 2021.
