“Giving back to local communities is at the core of Walden Local Meat’s values and we’re overwhelmed each year by our members’ responses to this program,” said Mike Leahy, Vice President of Brand & Marketing, Walden Local Meat Co.

Walden Local Meat Co., a community-based, direct-to-consumer share program that hand-delivers high quality meat to members’ doorsteps from farms across the Northeast, and their members have donated more than 2,700 pounds of meat to local New England food banks including Abenaki Helping Abenaki and Pine Street Inn, through its Thanksgiving member donation program. Each Thanksgiving season, members can purchase meat that is given directly to local nonprofits.

This year’s donations are expected to help provide over 5,000 meals to those in need this winter. These donations are coming at a time when food insecurity is nearly doubling pre-pandemic times. Project Bread estimates that one in six households in Massachusetts are food insecure.

“Giving back to local communities is at the core of Walden Local Meat’s values and we’re overwhelmed each year by our members’ responses to this program,” said Mike Leahy, Vice President of Brand & Marketing, Walden Local Meat Co. “High-quality protein is a key element of a nutritious meal and we’re happy to help contribute to meals for those in need.”

“Pine Street Inn is very grateful to the Walden Local Meat members who have supported Pine Street Inn over the years”, said Lyndia Downie, President and Executive Director, Pine Street Inn. “In this time of inflation and high food costs, these donations are especially significant and will impact more than 3,700 meals we serve to those experiencing homelessness.”

“Food insecurity is unfortunately prevalent and a reality that Nulhegan Abenaki Tribal Citizens must face on a day to day basis. As a parent or elderly person, it is hard to decide whether or not to purchase medicine, fuel, diapers, or food when your paycheck arrives. Our tribal citizens have one of the largest health disparities for chronic diseases, mental health, and other related health issues derived from the lack of healthy foods,” Chief Don Stevens, Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe, and Executive Director of Abenaki Helping Abenaki. “We are very grateful for the caring members of Walden Local Meat, who have provided protein to our people. The generous donations of meat to our food programs ensure that the recipients of such generosity go to bed with full bellies.”

As a further investment into local communities, each month, on behalf of their members, Walden Local Meat donates 1% of the volume in their member program to local charities who provide meals for the underserved. The “1% for the Hungry” program helps Walden Local Meat Co. promote food security and sustainability, while continuing to strengthen local communities.
