Creekwood Dental Arts Hosts Training on the Oral-Systemic Health Connection

Research suggests those with gum disease are nearly three times as likely to suffer from heart disease.

Creekwood Dental Arts hosted a continuing education seminar for members of the American Academy of Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH). The two-day event for dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists presented cutting-edge research on how oral health and gum disease are tied to a person’s overall health. Coincidentally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article in August stating that the people most vulnerable to COVID-19 are also at increased risk of oral disease and associated systemic health problems.

Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, thereby impacting the rest of the body. Studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease is linked to heart disease, lung disease, diabetes complications and even Alzheimer’s and dementia. Research suggests those with gum disease are nearly three times as likely to suffer from heart disease. Studies have shown that the bacteria responsible for bronchitis and pneumonia may derive from the oral cavity, while gum disease can worsen symptoms of preexisting diseases such as COPD and asthma.

Those with diabetes are more prone to tooth decay, gingivitis, dry mouth and infection. Also, in pregnancy, an increase in hormone levels raises the risk of inflamed gums. This can lead to gum disease if left untreated and is also associated with premature birth and low birth-weight babies.

Dr. Donna G. Miller, Dr. Michelle Hinds and Dr. Austin Green believe in the importance of attending continuing education courses, conferences and seminars on a regular basis to stay current on advances in dental technology, techniques and treatments. They are also dedicated to helping other dentists and allied health personnel stay informed on the latest evidence-based research. This philosophy is integral to providing patients with the highest quality dental care. A family and general dentist practice, Creekwood Dental Arts provides a full spectrum of services to people of all ages – from routine procedures like dental cleanings – to gingivitis treatment and tooth replacement.

The practice has rigorous infection control processes in place to ensure the safety and comfort of patients who come in for dental exams and other services. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the office added measures to some of their existing treatment protocols. They follow infection control recommendations from the CDC, American Dental Association (ADA), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and stay up to date on changing guidelines to protect patients, staff and the community.
