Without the financial support of the 340B program, communities in need could lose access to critical, life-saving care, as well as important medications such as PrEP. PrEP is a once-daily tablet or once-month injection that reduces the spread and transmission of HIV in high-risk individuals in communities where condom usage may be stigmatized.
The PrEP pill assists people in high viral load populations in avoiding HIV transmission, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, socioeconomic position, or participation in any high-risk activity or substance abuse. While PrEP is vital nationwide, the populations most affected by HIV are those in healthcare deserts. The 340B program, a federally funded initiative, serves the entire country but is especially important in limiting the spread of HIV in these underserved communities.
