“We help low-income, uninsured, or underinsured people in Illinois get access to their medications by focusing on medication management, adherence, and reconciliation, as well as preventative care, and patient education.”

UnitedRx, the Midwest’s largest independent long-term care pharmacy, is now a 340B provider. The 340B program enables hospitals to serve as community safety nets by stretching their limited resources and offering additional benefits and services, producing substantial savings for eligible hospitals to invest in projects that enhance patient services and access to care.
“UnitedRx plays an important role in terms of quality and efficiency for our 340B community,” says UnitedRx CEO Chuck Benain. “We help low-income, uninsured, or underinsured people in Illinois get access to their medications by focusing on medication management, adherence, and reconciliation, as well as preventative care, and patient education.”
Without the financial support of the 340B program, communities in need could lose access to critical, life-saving care, as well as important medications such as PrEP. PrEP is a once-daily tablet or once-month injection that reduces the spread and transmission of HIV in high-risk individuals in communities where condom usage may be stigmatized.
The PrEP pill assists people in high viral load populations in avoiding HIV transmission, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, socioeconomic position, or participation in any high-risk activity or substance abuse. While PrEP is vital nationwide, the populations most affected by HIV are those in healthcare deserts. The 340B program, a federally funded initiative, serves the entire country but is especially important in limiting the spread of HIV in these underserved communities.
UnitedRx consistently provides higher continuity of care by using pharmacists’ prescription expertise, community accessibility, and the public’s trust in the profession. UnitedRx collaborates with the 340B program to supply all essential prescriptions door-to-door, regardless of insurance coverage or capacity to pay. The pharmacy can also practice at a higher level by prescribing and quickly distributing PrEP and PEP drugs, providing patients with non-discriminatory access to these HIV prevention and transmission treatments.
“By engaging with our patients in dialogues about proper medication usage and the necessity of medication adherence, we establish a link between prescribers and patients,” says Benain. “This program has built an old-school family bond between our pharmacy staff and the patients we treat, comparable to what pharmacy was when it first started. The pharmacy becomes the patient’s “go to” for any problems, allowing them to receive whatever treatment they require without judgment and feel cared for as a member of our family.”
UnitedRx serves as a health liaison for these community members, ensuring that they have constant communication with providers and resources. The pharmacy will also ensure that the patient has consistent access to non-medication services such as emergency housing, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and over-the-counter medications.
