“Our objective with this technology is to develop a culture in which employees recognize the risks and take personal responsibility for reporting drug diversion in facilities and for the patients to whom we have an ethical and moral obligation,” said Chuck Benain, CEO of UnitedRx.

UnitedRx, the Midwest’s largest full-service, independent long-term care pharmacy, is combating drug diversion in skilled nursing facilities with cutting-edge technology such as Cubex®. To ensure that controlled substances are secure, accounted for, and always administered at the correct dosage, the medicine cabinet features extra security and automated logging.

“Our objective with this technology is to develop a culture in which employees recognize the risks and take personal responsibility for reporting drug diversion in facilities and for the patients to whom we have an ethical and moral obligation,” said Chuck Benain, CEO of UnitedRx.

The American Nurses Association reports that 10% of nurses are drug dependent. To illustrate, one in every ten nurses whom a patient comes in contact with is most likely struggling with addiction. With over 3 million nurses employed in the healthcare industry, this translates to an estimated 300,000 substance abusers.

Nurses who abuse drugs are more likely to be addicted to prescription medicines such as amphetamines, opiates, sedatives, tranquilizers, and inhalants, all of which are readily available in their workplaces. Drugs that may go unnoticed for a long time are also frequently accessible to healthcare practitioners, further adding to the problem of drug diversion among nurses and CNAs.

With UnitedRx’s Cubex Biometric security, nurses must use their fingerprints to access the cabinet containing over 400 drugs, allowing for the tracking of suspicious activities. The device, which is used as part of a complete diversion prevention and detection program, prohibits multiple access to drugs. Similarly, in order to monitor waste or returns, the system requires access from two users.

“By employing this technology within our organization and making it accessible as a methodology for other facilities to employ, we anticipate being able to considerably lessen the drug diversion crisis in the healthcare sector and incentivize people impacted to seek treatment,” said UnitedRx National Director of Sales and Marketing Melanie Williams
