United Way of Frederick County’s VITA Program Offering Free Tax Preparation Hotline Help

Until May 21, 2020, United Way of Frederick County is now offering a free tax preparation assistance hotline to individuals who need help filing their taxes online.

Individuals who make $56,000 or less annually can receive free tax help by calling 2-1-1 or 866-411-6803. When calling the hotline, individuals will put in a request for help by providing information to the intake specialist and then will receive a call back from an IRS-certified tax preparer within 48 hours.

“As many people are now trying to file their taxes online, we are happy to answer their questions by phone to help them as best as we are able,” says Rebecca Full, VITA Program Manager. “If you are using an online software and have questions about specific tax policy, we hope to be able to walk you through to the next step,” she adds.

United Way of Frederick County’s annual free tax preparation program, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), allows eligible individuals to schedule an appointment and have their taxes done in person at no cost. However, due to COVID-19, the program had to shut down early. In the 2018 tax season, VITA provided service to over 600 moderate to low income households in Frederick County. United Way of Frederick County originally planned to exceed that number this year.
