For years, research money has been difficult to raise for saliva diagnostics, the study in which saliva can be examined to reveal disease and illness. Fortunately, thanks in part to the work of Dr. David T. W. Wong of UCLA and others worldwide, the situation is rapidly improving and education about the oral cavity and necessary hygiene for immunity protection is becoming more widespread.
Sharon Kleyne, host of the internationally syndicated The Power of Water® & Your Health sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, naturally pH balanced water technology for acid mantle protection, on VoiceAmerica World Talk Radio & Apple iTunes, says that there has been pushback against saliva research and compares it to her own organ of the eye research. “There was little research into dry eye and atmospheric evaporaton and it’s taken years to educate people about the potential immunity weakness of the eye,” says Kleyne.
Wong praises Kleyne’s insight. “The pushback has been significant,” says Wong, “and partially rightly so, because the science wasn’t there. But now this pandemic has brought saliva research to the front line.” Wong describes how the antibodies in blood can also be found in saliva. So, we can now measure the antibodies in saliva. We are heading towards tests to be able to test everybody’s immunity through their saliva.
“Dr. Wong,” asks Kleyne, “Do you think we aren’t educated about saliva? Do you think we’ve ignored that research?“
“You’re right,” Wong agrees. “It’s rather like the Rodney Dangerfield of bio fluids (saliva). It’s not being respected.”
“Teach us what you’ve been learning about our mouths, what I call the oral cavity,” says Kleyne.
“The oral cavity, Sharon, is as you described part of the body and it communicates with the environment of the outside world,” Wong answers. “Within it, the oral cavity carries out important functions from mastication to speech and other important bodily functions.” Wong reveals the startling fact that everybody produces 600 milliliters of spit every day—at least two cans of soda of saliva a day.
“Isn’t that tied into when the baby is born,” asks Kleyne, “that all of a sudden there’s a tone that we can walk into a room, not see the person, but recognize them by their tone of voice? Is the saliva an influence on that?”
“Isn’t that interesting!” replies Wong. “I’m not exactly aware of that, but Dr. Jill Maron of Tufts University would love to hear about that. I’ll check in with her about this.”
When Kleyne asks Wong about research and the pandemic, Wong says that “this pandemic really advances the clinical utility and usefulness of this bio fluid that has its value to inform anyone anywhere who is infected and not infected. I think that landscape is changing and in a few years we’ll be looking at saliva with a very different set of lenses. My hope and commitment is to scientifically credential it and advance it for clinical utility.”
“I bet,” says Kleyne, “you’ve been very frustrated trying to teach this to people who weren’t listening.”
“You know, Sharon,” replies Wong, “you’re so insightful perhaps if we could have crossed paths earlier you could have been my advocate.”
“Correct me if I’m wrong,” says Kleyne, “but I’m looking at this saliva research as key to diagnosing other illnesses.”
“Well said,” says Wong. “Well said.” Wong describes how sixteen years ago the National Institute of Health invested in the scientific community and posed a question. It asked researchers to scientifically credential saliva, a non-evasive material produced by our body that could be utilized for early disease detection. “The entire world is seeking early detection in the most non-evasive way. During this pandemic, half of research funding has been for saliva,” says Wong.
Kleyne applauds this major breakthrough,” says Kleyne. People are so impatient with the testing during this pandemic. “The portal entry of the pathogens to our bodies is the oral cavity and nasal cavity,” says Wong. “IGA antibodies exist in the mouth, offering protection, if you will. It is important to guard the portal entry to assist the mouth’s antibodies in fighting off pathogens such as the virus.”
