Over the years, I have heard a lot of people outside of the dentistry world talk about veneers. Some positive and some negative. But nearly all that I hear is based on incorrect or an undeveloped understanding of exactly what they are and how they are created. I want to provide a resource where people can understand what they are and how they can benefit their smile.
Veneers Are Fragile
When people think of porcelain, tough and sturdy is not the first thought that comes to mind. This is a popular myth when it comes to veneers. In fact, porcelain veneers are designed very strong. Strong enough to withstand the same demands of natural teeth. Veneers in many cases can last longer than 20 years, so you can be assured they aren’t weak or fragile. Aluminum when in foil is very thin and easily broken, but, when it is designed for a car engine, it can also be quite sturdy and strong when engineered to be.
I Can Get Veneers and Forget About Maintenance
It is critical that you take good care of your teeth, whether they are natural teeth or veneers. A common issue for people who get veneers is oral care. You must still brush and floss your teeth two to three times per day. This will help make sure you get the full beautiful smile for the life of your veneers.
Veneers Look Fake
This is the number 1 complaint I hear about veneers. The truth is that porcelain veneers are used, specifically, because they reflect light in the same way that your natural teeth do. Veneer specialists know how to create a realistic looking tooth. They implement natural spaces and differing shapes to the porcelain veneers to create a natural looking smile. The dreaded chicklet tooth (square and uniform) is not something that you will get from a specialist. As long as you are seeing a specialist for your veneers, you should have no concerns with teeth that don’t look natural and beautiful.
With that being said…….
Any Dentist Can Place Veneers
As with any industry, Dentists have fields where they practice their expertise. You wouldn’t go to a dermatologist for open heart surgery right? Dentistry have experts in different focuses as well. There is an art to making veneers. Design is just as important as the specific placing of the veneers. Practice and experience are priceless with each veneer specialist. Make sure that you do your research to find the right veneer specialist for you.
