Wlad Pierre-Francois, a student in Trident at American InterContinental University’s (Trident) Ph.D. in Business Administration program, presented the literature review, “Factors that influence HIPAA Secure compliance in small and medium-size health care facilities,” at the Kennesaw State University Conference on Cybersecurity Education, Research, and Practice on Friday, October 23.
The co-presenter for this proceeding was Dr. Indira Guzman, Doctoral Studies Director in Trident’s Glenn R. Jones College of Business.
Mr. Pierre-Francois’s research aims to understand how the potential risk of sanctions impacts organizational adherence to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule (SR) at small and medium-sized healthcare facilities.
The Security Rule provides a national standard for the safeguard of electronically protected health information and was created to ensure that U.S. citizens’ electronic health data is protected from loss or abuse.
“According to previous research, small and medium-sized healthcare facilities have had difficulties maintaining compliance with the Security Rule,” states Wlad Pierre-Francois. “Some of the contributing factors that have led to past non-compliance include lack of executive management support or interest in SR adherence, low information security awareness, and organizations whose cultures do not value information security.”
This literature review serves as an important building block for Mr. Pierre-Francois’s Ph.D. dissertation.
Mr. Pierre-Francois is the President of P-Bon Services, a managed service provider with more than 20 years of experience in managing information systems. He is a military veteran and has experience in various sectors, including health, legal, retail, and financial.
Mr. Pierre-Francois is a current Ph.D. in Business Administration student at Trident. He holds a Master of Business Administration, I.T. Management concentration, from Western Governors University.
