“We are so excited PRA is disseminating this new training series and could not think of a better partner. The MISSION approach is to use evidence-based practices within a system of care that helps to support and sustain recovery.” – David Smelson, PsyD.

The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association and the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Foundation (PRA/F) are dedicated to the growth and training of the recovery workforce while promoting wellness and recovery. The purpose of PRA/F is to provide information and resources to improve the practice of psychiatric rehabilitation.
“One of our primary goals is to refresh the course offerings available to the recovery workforce and provide the best resources to our members. The MISSION Model was at the top of our list, and it’s just the beginning of new resources we plan on offering soon.” – Dori Hutchinson, PhD, Psychiatric Rehabilitation Foundation Chair.
So, what is MISSION? Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking (MISSION) is an evidence-based intervention developed by David Smelson and his team at the University of Massachusettes Chan School of Medicine to consider the mental health, substance misuse, and other psychosocial needs of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders (CODs). MISSION has been building its evidence base for the past 26 years and has recently been written about in a National institute of Health Spotlight as a novel whole health approach to recovery.

The new online course consists of seven self-paced, asynchronous, e-learning modules explicitly developed for providers involved in treating individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Each of the seven modules is an interactive stand-alone course that includes video, knowledge checks, and a final exam. Module One provides an overview of the MISSION Model, and Modules 2-6 address the implementation of each of the five vital evidence-based components of the MISSION Model of Care. The final module, Module 7, integrates all the components of the MISSION Model within a case study.
The Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA) is a membership organization that advocates for Psychiatric Rehabilitation on the Federal and State level, certifying professionals with the CPRP and CFRP credentials and providing a local community for those in the workforce through state chapters and affiliates. The Academy for Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Recovery is the premiere source of live and online training and education for the psych rehab workforce. The Academy is the educational arm of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Foundation (PRF), an IRS-recognized 501c3 nonprofit organization with evolving research, grants, and public outreach initiatives.
This MISSION Training Series was supported by the following grants: NIH/NIAAA R41DA044030-01A1 and R42 AA026751-2
All of the work was done at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and licensed to Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association.
