Instead of scalpels and sutures, this innovative technology uses laser energy to gently and effectively clear away the bacteria responsible for gum disease.

Periodontists Dr. Gregory A. Toback and Dr. Marianne Urbanski of Shoreline Periodontics and Dental Implants in New London, CT and Westerly, RI, went virtual when they hosted a recent 2020 Hygiene Study Club seminar. Offered exclusively to local dentists and dental hygienists in Southeastern CT and RI, this session fulfilled cultural competency continuing education (CE) requirements.

“Cultural Competency” featured guest speaker Cathie Collier, RDH BEd, a well-known dental hygiene educator. The seminar covered verbal and nonverbal communication with patients from diverse cultures and how this is integral to understanding the reason behind their healthcare decisions and values. Participants learned strategies for effective communication by using different styles and skills to overcome potential cultural barriers. Drs. Toback and Urbanski believe that good communication is as integral to delivering compassionate care as leveraging state-of-the-art gum disease treatments.

Shoreline Periodontics offers permanent dental implants and periodontal disease (gum disease) treatment, including advanced LANAP® laser dentistry. LANAP is a minimally invasive alternative to osseous surgery. Instead of scalpels and sutures, this innovative technology uses laser energy to gently and effectively clear away the bacteria responsible for gum disease. This approach results in less pain, postop sensitivity, and gum loss, as well as greatly decreased downtime after treatment.

In addition to good communication, safety is also a top priority, which is why the Shoreline Periodontics Hygiene Study Club was presented virtually. The practice has also taken extra steps to protect patients during the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to following infection control recommendations from the ADA, CDC, and OSHA, the number of people allowed in the office is limited.
